It's bare concrete and high up, can't just wipe that out by mistake.

I thought so too, reading higher through this thread permission was obtained from the family. But seemingly not from the city.

Complicating my getting permission from the City (i felt they would turn us down for ‘drawing attention’ to a tragic event…) was the fact that the nearest pillar to be painted (and several others) were now behind a fence, screening off an 18-month refurb project for CTICC, which added complications, or so I felt.

Since it was so neatly/professionally done, and since it indeed marked a tragic event, I went ahead without permissions, after making brief enquiries, and not getting anywhere.

(It was easier to seek ‘forgiveness’ than to request approval, which is not usually how I operate!). I also wanted to ‘start’, after having gained permission of both his Son as well as his Widow…(and not let any MORE time elapse going through red tape/paperwork...)

I DID feel that being on an access-controlled building site that was renovating just the INSIDE of CTICC, it would then afford 12-18 months ‘protection’….(being behind a security fence, etc.)...

A real pity, but i would chance it, again, if I had to.

I have a mate who is good friends with Alan Winde; will ask him for any intel, and revert.

My condolences to his family and friends.

I just want to take a quick moment to remind the cycling community (particularly the ladies) that self-defense tools exist and can be used to stop these animals. I promise you, nobody keeps coming at you once they’ve been maced in the face or stands up again after being tasered.

That said, as a 38 year old male, I never leave the house without a 120 ml can of Force pepper spray and a taser gun in my back pocket of my cycling jersey.

Use what's available to us guys. You can’t tell me you’re too old to point and pull a trigger or press an aerosol nozzle. If you’re caught unarmed, it’s on you, I’m sorry. This is Africa. It is what it is.

I'll rather go down swinging knowing I tried to defend myself, than roll over and become another victim.

Stay alert and stay safe out there.
