ride by wire? its awesome that they actually bringing it to the market, I thought that still using test models at Le Tour was quite ambitious.

of course i won't touch it until all the teething problems are sorted, but I think precise shifting will be the big gain if they are using sensors. on the chain/cassette. and when they bring out the 'voice activated model......'

Swissvan, if you really think a 7.4V rechargeable lithium battery is bad for world pollution you'll get on well with the hippies who live on my street.

hmmmm unrelaible electronics....

darn those servo motors that keep the airliners flying...

Darn those ECU's that keep your engine working for years and years...

darn  unreliable cell phones..

darn those bloody pacemakers that keep weak hearts working..

darn TV sets that break down every few days or so...

Ok enough sarcasm, it's poor taste.

Everywhere around there are little electronic gubbins and widgets combobulating stuff. They seem to go about their work without fuss, day in and day out, year in year out.

I doubt the reliability of the Di2 will be an issue under normal use. One failureon the tour does not constitute an unreliable system. We don;t know what caused the malfunction.

Cable systems are not fool proof, we just unstand them better than electronic systems and you know how much we love change.. NOT!.

I applaud Shimano for taking this step. It's brave and it's very well executed.

now if only I could afford it...

They've spent years and years developing this system. I think worries regarding reliability and wet-weather performance are groundless.

Shimano might not be as cool as Campy, but they're not stupid either.

They're not going to bring a recreational/outdoors product to market with the CEO and chief of R&D sitting in the boardroom holding their thumbs and saying "I hope they don't ride in the rain"

Electronics have come a long way and I think it's great that they're pushing the envelope.

Respect to them!

Looking at our new 2009 range and pricing, and the D/A electric is on there... but no price smiley12.gif

I think it is going to be very expensive.

I had a look at a new option in our BH range with Super Record and Ultra-light everything else... my word that group is expensive!

The price is at the bottom of the cyclingnews article. I like how the RD and STIs are the same price.

STI Dual Control levers - ?349.99/pair
Rear derailleur - ?349.99
Front derailleur - ?249.99
Cable set - ?99.99
Battery - ?49.99
Charger - ?49.99
Chainset (Dura Ace FC7900) - ?319.99
Cassette - ?129.99

R11k more than Super Record......

OUCH!!!

But that is like comparing caviar with slang bollie. Wait for Campy to release their electronic set and then atleast you can compare caviar with kreef bollie.

WOW thats expensive to relieve your fingers of a tiny bit of pressure while changing gears... rather buy Normal Record (Or DA) and put the change into wheels, frame upgrade or tertiary education.

see http://www.dura-ace.com/

Mavic tried electronic shifting a few years back with their 'zap' system - not wonderful. Shimano will cetainly mindful not to make the same mistake and will no doubt have carefully test all the parts for reliability.

That said, I'm sure there is a weight penalty for this system as well as a price, so I'll give it a miss for the time being

I think most of the negative comments are from us computer geeks.  I just don't like the idea of untested electronic gadgetry on my bike.  By all means, they might be light years ahead in WHAT they're doing, but the principle is not proven as yet.  So I'll stick with my cables and WAIT!

I have to say though, even if Shimano brought out a groupset that shifted by thought and sold it for half the price....I'd still rather ride Campagnolo!
