while the brains trust is focused on this thread - once I have the chain inside the coke bottle and its all shaken up and the liquid is dirty - how do I get the chain out again without having to cut open the bottle? The blinken chain always kinks and never comes out easy !

Use a yum yum peanut butter jar. The mouth is wide enough that you can fit your hand in if you want to.

I new the brains trust would solve the chain dilema.

But the question is now - after you do the turps thing - then you do the prepsol thing' date=' then you do the sunlight soap thing, then you do the rinse thing. Then you lube the chain thing.

But the damn jockey wheels are a real bummer, and I cant always take the cassette of to clean.

<<<Hijack>>>

Slowbee.....turps is for painting!!LOL

Use paraffin.....and only that...no prepsol etc. (OR only use prepsol...any combination mentioned here is not necessary & overkill)

Pat chain dry and lube....

I use a dish cleaning brush in an icecream container...no mess & no fuss...

works like a charm!

Use the old dirty parraffin as the first wash for next time Ur chain needs cleaning..

<<<Hijack off>>>

Price is king!! I'lll buy from where the price is right....

Surely no LBS will sell stuff at a loss??? That's just bad for bussiness...

Strange but ever since that little incident where some people tried to make out the LBS to be black sheep I have not bought from CWC either and rather go to FPC or the LAB . And I will fully support the govermunt if they decide to tax these spares that gets imported for bikes in an effort to save our bike shops .

How is that going to save the bike shops, may I ask.?

You cant have SELECTIVE duty payable only to some. If duty is payable its payable by ALL, so all that would happen is the importer would also pay the extra duty, compound those costs down to the LBS and the consumer.! - all that would happen is everybody would pay more.

Anyway, this is just a moot point. SA is a signatory to the International Free Trade Agreement, which in a nutshell means, anyone can import anything they like and sell it at any price they like as long as they do so within the confines of the laws / rules of the country and pay all applicable taxes and duties.

Nobody can stop CWC importing anything - its not possible.

The issue is probably as Go-lefty mentioned, that CWC probably still buys some lines locally from the official importers, and this is where they can possibly make life difficult, by refusing to supply them with lines they need locally - personally, I think its a short sighted attitude but, indicative of a young industry in distress.

Dear Brains trust - I am now confused.

Should you use parafin on your chain and then rinse off with sunlight ?

But first go to the OK Bazaars to get YumYum container (eat peanut butter first).

And why is my empty ice cream tub full of black stuff at the bottom when I pour the dirty liquid out. It always stains the dish Unhappy

Thinking outloud: How many people in the South African cycling community buy online (Be it local or overseas)?

Is online shopping really hurting the lbs?

ghostface, sre you from Dragons? (looking at your sign).

Yes, you are right, any sale outside SA is one to many, but if Bike Shops (and importers) pprofit margins is to high... too bad.

I still have to support my own family, I do not have to support the Shop owner and his family as well.

Reading between the lines on some of the posts here, its often the distributers/suppliers/wholesaler to blame for the high prices.

I doubt its a LBS giving CWC grief...

so why is it that if you want to buy polar stuff the price is the same everywhere - and so much more than overseas (not just CRC)?? is that not price fixing?  why do LBS go with this system? and why has there been such a massive increase in prices over the last 4/5 years? it's not just the rand, otherwise prices would have gone up and down more... am I just dense or is this not chopping both feet off your market?? who decides polar prices in this country - and if it's just the distributor and there's no room for competition, then... ha ha ha - we need a Free Market expert to comment here!

You'll be surprised to know that bikes shops make a very very small margin on Polar products.

I'll rather call it a commission then a margin. That is why they can not give discount. It's not their product. The same with Oakley.

Thats true. When I worked at a retailer we stopped stocking Polar because the margins were very low and we got beaten on price by Due South / Cape Union Mart as they bought in bulk and could offer better prices.
