This is like most coastal towns I know. They hate not dislike but hate the traffic we create with our vehicles in December BUT then this seems to be the very same lifeline that keeps them alive for the next 11 months.

 

Do not know the CRADLE route but pretty sure there must be some kind of spinn off for them???

 

It truly starts with yourself and what example you set for the kids in the car or on the bike or wherever since they will be the drivers in a couple of years time.

 

We are seeing the same thing in SBR and thus they are currently thinking about closing to cyclists.

 

Sad that it takes but 2 or 3 confused people to completely ruin it for all.

linnega you are forcing the shoe onto the other foot here, the issue is cyclists behaviour, NOT cage driver behaviour... Irrespective how any of us feel about cage drivers, this thread is about cyclists behaviour.

I am not sure where exactly this picture was taken, but the section of road from Beyers Naude to the second traffic circle (close to the rhino and lion park) definitely has cycling lane signs, and the dotted yellow line as shown on this photo...

I appreciate Linnega's point. Cyclists have the right to the road. If there is no cycling lane, we cyclist do not have to leep as far left as possible - although maniac drivers in SA force us there. According to the law, cycling in a yellow lane is technically illegal.

 

Just so everybody is in the clear, the dashed yellow lane in some of the pics is a cycling lane, yes?

 

Some quirks re the rules above:

(1.) Could be interpreted as saying riding out of the saddle is illegal.

(4.) Some folks break the law on 2 counts, when going up a steep hill.

(6.) Eish. Taking off wind jammer, or digging for food in pockets with both hands also illegal.

Dont really care about this argument or whether i'm welcome or not in the Cradle - how would I know? There's nobody bringing me milk and home-baked cookies anywhere else I ride to show I'm welcome.

 

But Christies anomalies are fun.

 

The one I like to think of is we have to ride single file unless overtaking.  So if you're running a paceline everything is Street Legal & let the bastards wait behind you.

 

Of course the law's no good without a bit of interpretation & as we're all top-qualified to be the last word in interpretation the debate aint likely to advance very far.

I was on my way to Bakwena race this morning when I got caught up behind a bunch ride in Kempton this morning. Bunch of plus/minus 20 with a Merc blocking the cars behind them. It was on a slight uphill and they could only manage 18km/h. Solid line and cyclist taking up the whole lane and the guy in the Merc looking back in his mirror the whole time I was behind him, but did not make way for the cars piling up behind me. Must have been a club ride from Kempton. Selfish bunch

 

 

 

Thanks, now I feel better. I train on my own. I do not want to be associated with these arrogant cyclists not abiding by the rules of the road.

I concur that the pics dont tell a good story about some not all cyclists behaviour, i have an issue with the way the header reads. To my knowledge the roads around cradle are public property and i see there is even resurfacing done in pics at tax payers money so to state that cyclists are not welcome is a bit arrogant, something along the lines of not in my neighbourhood. VdbPark hosts more races than any other area, practically every week and you dont see them making such a fuss. Rather than focusing on a specific area a national awareness is required.
