There are quite valid reasons why I think a lot of South Africans are not that happy about the fifa world cup here' date=' including me. In fact, make me the #1?.....and read the rest above[/quote']

I personally do not disagree with you in all of the above, and in most situations I would be standing up there with you. but....I think some times come when you need to do things out the ordinary. We are not talking about an arms deal waste of money here - a large focus of the bid for the word cup is to do with marketing and marketing the country. I have no sense for the figures or the anticipated ROI, but I would love to hear some stats from those in the know. I think we are buggering it up a bit with the inflated prices, but on the whole, I believe the ROI should far outweigh the negativity surrounding the "money should be better spent" philosophy.

Take a look at the lions test and the cricket, the poms were here in full force and there were no negative commentrs what so ever - in fact, I only heard positives.....yes the world cup is a bigger stage and more prone to attract the skabangas (sp*) but.... i bet you were not talking about how we should be spending our national budget when it was the rugby or cricket world cup

Its really about national priorities. If we had a fully-functional efficient public service, social justice, an equatable society and something to show off, well then we could afford the luxury of such an event. But this is not the case, this is early days in the transformation of the country and I write this as a supporter and participant of the democratic revolution.

Just a few reasons:

-Public health services are appalling, only the rich can afford comprehensive medical insurances;

- Public Schooling and primary/secondary education is even a bigger mess. Teachers are paid a pittance, therefore who remains? Youth are the future. Once again only the rich can afford the decent ?private schools. Fundamental injustice.

-What a cock-up is the public transport issue? condition of roads, Gautrain, abortion of the Ria Viva scheme etc etc

-Do I have to mention Security?

-Land Reform is a total stuff-up due to incompetence and if its not sorted we are heading to a Zim style land grab that I can assure you.

etc etc?

Now soo much money has gone into developing infrastructure around the World Cup. Almost all public services have been told this is priority so eventhing else takes a back seat. For what? a game of football?

And so many Cap-Ex contracts out there that has spawned a new 'empowered' elite mainly through greasing palms by the old guard. And also who has benefited? The 'white' Civil Eng companies showing record profits and foreign contracters lauging all the way to the bank.

All whilst we sit here and watch the rot happening before our eyes.

Personally I dont watch footies on a regular basis, but always enjoy the World Cup on the box. But I am getting out of here for the entire period and will not be watching a thing as a personal protest, hoping to do a cycle tour of the Phillippines. ?

I hear you, and there is a lot of problems, but people being negative is not going to change a thing. People should just go and enjoy the atmosphere, and meet a few foreigners and have fun!

I went to a Confed Cup game (Italy vs Brazil) with a motor retailer taking some important clients, and those afrikaans guys who hate football was so negative beforehand, but after the game they said they have never experienced such a vibe at any rugby match and it was great! We even did the braai beforehand and was the only one`s! The football fans just gave us some strange looks, but its all good....

One guy in our centre bought R80 000 worth of tickets for him and his family from portugal. He is taking leave for the whole WC month. He showed me his itenary last week. They will be doing a road trip and watch most of the games, if not at the stadium then in a pub somewere.

I'm not negative. I think it will go off well...

However, I am not interested in it (I don't care for watching soccer)

and feel the money could have been better spent elsewhere, but

that's another topic...

Stretch I get your point but its not only money, its time. And we dont really have the luxury of ?time in terms of sorting out important national issues here. The Mbeki years have been a total waste of time.?

All the marketing speak makes me want to throw myself down a mine shaft. Whats the point of marketing something that's vrot and not working and decaying before our eyes? And now we have to throw more Billions to sort ?out things like transport (recently lots of moneys being spent on busses specifically for the tournament)

I also write this not only as a tax payer, but also an employer who generates and collects Employees Tax for the state, and a retailer who makes VAT and has to hand that over as well. ?

?

Its just sickening to know that for the 94.7 I paid R800.00 return to Cpt for the WC final its going to cost me R8 000.00-can you blame the negativity?

The same criteria used for ticket sales should've been used for flights & accommodation.

Any ball game is stupid. In the one they try and take it away from you just to go and put it down again and then it starts again. In the other they throw you with one and you try and hit it away as far as possible. Can they make up their mind already.

i think its gonna be great, I'm not a huge soccer fan but its a cool event to host, and i cant wait for the atmosphere around the cup

I just think they could've been wiser in their spending (but we all know the ANC is not run by accountants)

Take the mbombela stadium, that cost them R710 000 000 to build. There's only 4 games to be played there, that works out to R177 500 000 per game. Whats gonna happen to that stadium after the world cup? They dont have a big soccer or rugby team that will fill the seats regularly.

What a waste.....

I think if we had a team that could perform semi-well, there will be more of a buzz.

For me, I love english football, specially when Chelsea is winning, south african football is poor, no spectator value and amateurish.

I'm not negative about it, I'm just questioning the money they spend on the staduims, and when you look around you people is "krepeer van armoede""

This goverments priorities is screwed up, and that makes me negative !

thats typical of this country & the rest of africa. We want to be laarny like the americans or Europeans & be 1st world so we spend like theres no tomorrow & as long as government officials are happy in their huge homes who gives a $h!t about the rest.So it still boils down to the fact that our friends that run the country cant think further than their noses & greed is still the order of the day & who cares about tomorrow. We live for the here & now is the mentality. Not to mention that we are in recession & thousands have lost their jobs, perhaps some food for thought, but once again they dont care. The list goes on, so for the optomists good luck & whatever. I choose to rather be a pessimst ( spelling ) thanks.

Oh one more thing, just dont complain about being taxed to death ( in all liklihood to subsidise the enourmity of stadium costs & road building ). Once youve been taxed to death, you will then be charged a sort of congestion fee as in London for travelling the N1 commuting from PTA to JHB.

Once again the saying in Afrikaans rings in my "Skep Die Room"

so excuse me for being negative, but i dont quite see the positive as yet.

Oh & I hate the game of soccer, what a pointless, chew your wrists off game

I'm only negative because we can't get any tickets to the games!!!  We have applied everytime and still no luck.  But then we aren't going for the cheapest SA tickets as we have overseas visitors joining us.

We want to see England as they are the team we support (I'm half english and my husband was born there).  I have also applied for other tickets where I'll get to see a big team like Spain or Brazil etc.  Because I watch the premier league and champions league, I will know a lot of the players!!!  The SA games I will watch, but from home.

Right now, I just wish they would hurry up and finish the road works.
