Slowbee Posted June 18, 2010 Share a couple of interesting points the most important being just what is regarded by some people as spam mail. Some of the posts here seem to suggest that getting normal newletter info is acceptable (not sure why), but getting viagra and give us a million rand type emails are regarded as spam. All rather confusing for some people. It suggests very blurred lines, because either you asked to get the email or you did not. Its kinda like getting those horribilus anus sms's that I dont want (and yes this has been discussed to death).
Skott5 Posted June 18, 2010 Share Actually the million rand type emails are a SCAM - different to SPAM, and does anyone buy viagra after recieving one of those mails ? You deserve to get SCAMMED if you do. A newsletter from a hobby or sport associated body is hardly spam FFS.
covie Posted June 18, 2010 Share slowbee, if you never want spam the answer is very simple never register for anything anywhere on the internet. I have work in IT for many years and have seen how they operate. You register on one site, they are affiliated to 20 other sites, and they use each others resources, mail lists and demographics. Not always savoury but most businesses function on a similar way. Most reputable dealers have a privacy disclaimer stating if your address will be sold to third parties or not. Nobody ever reads this. So if you register on a site and they sell your address third parties marketing firms etc, thats unfortuanitly that persons own negligence for not reading the disclaimer. He would have no one to blame but himself in that event. Now if he unsubscribed repeatedly and it was never handled done or handled properly in case he did try but technical errors prevented this. Then i can understand the ramblings and lashing out. But here theres swearing and acusations and a hell of a lot of assumptions around things, which should not be made public till he at least tried to deal with the parties responsible. Case in point was you dont see everyone else posting threads becuase they are tired of getting porn ads in their e-mail? And yes there are many different official classifications of what constitutes spam. This thread to me is the equivelant to shooting the guy that is trying to deliver the latest hi fi corporation flyer to my mailbox at home, I also did not ask for that and I cant even get them to ever stop delivering it. In this case select unsubcribe hit enter and move on with your life.

But with you on the manner in which this has been "handled". Someone should start drinking a sugar extra in his morning coffee.
Christopher Brunsdon Posted June 18, 2010 Share Well I opted in to receive mails from Biceletta and I'm not receiving more than the norm SPAM. But then again, I tossed my tinfoil-hat away.

However - your post raises the exact point. million rand emails in any inbox ...... should be regarded as spam (even though it is advertising a scam). It is unwanted email. recieving viagra type emails take up time/data etc and is also unwanted. getting a newsletter (even from your local potato box hobby shop), which is unwanted (i.e you never asked for it), can this also be regarded as spam? if it is unwanted is it spam? Covie, agree its easy to stop on your side, but then fine line between when people decide that its acceptable and when not (ie. potato hobby shop newsletter is acceptable ... but viagra not)

On the site, there are actually organizations like trustee that sites belong too and if you see the logo you know your information is safe.covie2010-06-18 07:19:

covie Posted June 18, 2010 Share Coenie trust me its not. I have worked in this field for a very very long time. I currently handle IT Risk analysis cases like this for a UK bank. And there is nothing illegal about it, if they obtained your information in a legal way. I.E. you registered on any website where it does not explicitly say they will NOT use or sell your details. covie2010-06-18 07:29:
