STRIKING KILLERS

based on the info provided as to what they earn, it's not as bad as some people make it out to be (now i can understand how teachers who allegedly earn "so little" can afford newer/better cars some of my friends). I know of a number of people who take home LESS than R7000 a month with NO housing allowance etc and they make ends meet. accepted, they struggle, but they don't put other people's lives at danger to change their lot in life. THAT is what has made me unsympathetic to the "cause" of the strike. I have bitched and moaned for a long time that they should earn more and "what do i pay taxes for - it should go to the teachers, nurses and cops" etc. BUT now that they have shown utter CONTEMPT for other people's lives they have lost my sympathy.

Actually Slowpoke the education dept. put out a summary of teachers earnings and increases since 2007, there has been a 50% increase in wages for certain teachers since 2007. Teachers with 30 years experience are earning in the region of 250-260.000 per anum.

I will try and find the graph. It was also broadcast on news24.

So yeah I agree with you, the money they earn at the bottom end of the scale R7000.00) is not great but its not bad either, there are many folks out there with degrees who dont come near those levels and who will likely see a 4% increase (if any)in line with the inflation rate.

Teachers at the top end of the scale are earning substantially more.

Anyway, having a particular profession do's not make one any more worthy of a better salary increase than another, and this strike is NOT about basic salaries, its about annual increases and this increase is way above inflation.

I bet Mr Zuma wishes he had never taken on this damn job! One problem after another these days! Personally I hope the Government holds on, if there is no money, there is no money!

They have no money? Remember when the cost for the Gautrain tripled? The money was found. Same with the stadiums and mushrooming cost. The money was found.

Don't worry about the money - from next month they will start to get billions with the new "carbon tax" on cars...

Oh yes, money will always be found, from your pocket (or from your company) in the form of taxes! Somewhere we all know there is money (carefully concealed of course!) however growth is slowing but it doesn't matter, just give 'em what they want and lets wait until this time next year for the next strike! Personally I feel the government needs to take aheavy hand here if South Africa is to survive, we cannot be held to ransom every year. Where were these same Unions when all the money was spent on Gautrain and the building of the stadiums? Did they utter a word? No, of course not, it was all good times prior to SWC 2010!

where were you when the ANC came into power. You think they're gonna risk losing votes by taking a stand against strikers. Look at the rest of Africa, thats where we're going. And the infighting (also in Africa, just higher level still(war)) has started already.

I don't know what media you use to follow current events, but the unions were very critical of the government and the costs of these things.

But TW, when you're critical, and you are ignored, what do you do? You vote for someone else. But, if you don't vote for a certain party in this country, you will be killed. Ever wondered why the unions has been so 'against' the government, but, don't start their own political parties?

I don't totally agree. The criticism that has been levelled at the ruling party and government has led to the two controversial pieces of legislation directed at curbing the media. Clearly, it has had some effect. Also, the possibility of a split within the Alliance - and the unions and other partner going on their own - has been simmering for some time.

We, the Taxpayers supplied that money, whether you know it or like it or not. And we will do it again!!!!

The Cosatu alliance represents almost the whole power base of the ANC. Cosatu knows this and know they have the ANC in the pocket, as they (ANC) cannot afford to loose this support. This is just a flexing of the muscles to show who is really the "boss". As soon as the ANC have capitilated (and they will, sooner or later, their latest feeble attempts to "resist" is just window dressing), things will go from bad to worse, quite quickly. SOCIALISM in the working here.

I'm sorry, call me whatever you like after this, but I call it as I see it.

I agree the Unions may have been critical, but where was all the mass action then? And without sounding like a tjop out of Star Wars, lets hope the Alliance does split!

Well if the teachers do clear R7000 as they guys hear have said I agree its not alot but its a lot more that 90% of my kitchen staff clear  I think the avg wage in the kitchen is around R4000-R5000

They will still vote for the ANC as they know when it all comes down to it they will get what they want.

They want to silence the media spilling all the beans on their extravagent lifestyles because the voters are being turned against them. they'll do everything in their power, even war to do it. Back to the arms deal...Do they think of protecting the country. No, they're protecting the ANC!

I'll call you "enlightened"!

Theres no doubt the government will fold sooner or later, Cosatu is the strongest of the tri-partate alliance and they will call the shots, they know it, we know it and the governmennt knows it, however they just have to make it look like they are making a stand.

.....and of course who will foot the bill, us, the taxpayer, so our taxes increase, our service delivery decreases and we (non striking teachers etc) dont see any of the increase in our pockets.!!

As you say, you cant come any closer to socialism than that.!
