I flew with luggage bag, and bike box with Kulula, paid ZAR350

if you book it online prior to flying it only costs 200Madibas

Got cardboard bicycle box (specialized - yes i got hairy eyeballs everywhere i went) from LBS.

the whole experience was painless

I flew to king shaka last week with Kalula, with my mtb packed in a cardboard box from the LBS. I only had bike box with stuff packed in it and it weighed 19kgs, which is under the 20kg limit per 'bag' that they allow you. took the rest of my stuff in a bag on the plane. No extra price charge! unless you taking more than one bag. Arrived at king shaka and my box came through the extra large parcels side, all went very well!

The key to travelling with a bike on a plane is knowledge. There are far too many posts where people accuse the airlines of theft and of screwing them over cos the airline wouldn't let them check in a massive bike box plus 30 kilograms of luggage and the kids pram etc etc without paying overweight charges.

The fact is the internet is awash with information on travelling with bikes and all airlines have policies that they adhere to and these are typically freely available on the internet. If in doubt you can also always phone the airline directly or your travel agent.

Whenever I see a post of some person who has had a tantrum about having to pay overweight all I think is what a dumbass.

Just a heads up on this to anyone planning to fly internationally with a bike.

Emirates has a 30kg checked baggage limit

Qatar has recently upped their limit to 30kg

Etihad has also upped the limit to 30kg

Turkish charge for bikes on a per sector basis. For the SA-Istanbul sector you pay 60 Euro and from Istanbul to anywhere in Europe you pay 30 Euro. So in short you'll pay 180 Euro to take a bike to Europe on Turkish. It's expensive but you'll still have your full luggage allowance on top of that and Turkish does had stipidly cheap specials from time to time.

I always carry my helmet in my hand. Never had a problem.
