Revival. I'm going the cardboard box route this year in hope the careless baggage handlers do hurt my ride again. I managed to get a box however it didn't fit in my car so I was forced to discard it. Are the boxes different sizes? My ride is a 17', 29er. Do you doctor/ghetto fix the box to size? Any advice would be appreciated.. spanx.

I have just packed 2 mtb into bike boxes for our trip to the Drakensberg. 1 into a thule hardshell one into the evoc soft case (each one purchased from hubbers)

The thule was seriously more effort and work and I am way more worried about the bike in the Thule box than the Evoc.

In retrospect I should have got both Evocs which were available, its a really neat design, so simple to pack and seems really safe.

So was in Cape Town on Holiday.

It was interesting to see people travelling with bikes,

This was the most interesting I saw.

I wonder how many pieces the bikes arrived in?post-11420-0-81206000-1419963546_thumb.jpgpost-11420-0-62202600-1419963587_thumb.jpg

In 1 piece (of the plastic wrapping); with the derailleur hanger bended, frame and handle-bar crushed by other languages on the same flight...

No derailleur hanger to bend.......it's a track bike :-)

This thread is very helpful.

Going to fly first time with my bike to Aus. Just saw the excess baggage prices and nearly died, so will be aiming to get everything below the 30kg limit in total (Qantas).

edit: SAA are 2 x 23 kg and Qantas are 30 kg in total.

Since the airlines code share, this is really confusing. Should I just book with SAA and argue that my limit should be set at what SAA gave me when I will be transferring on to Qantas?

SAA normally allow 23kg's extra for sport equipment. Phone them and check it's applicable on this flight.

You can argue that succesfully but you might not always get away with it.

If possible if the more allowance comes on the first leg, just ask them to check your luggage in through to your final destination. Unless you have customs to clear of course.
