on the note of tire brands, i used to be a confirmed believer in Maxxis, viz the Minions. BUt since getting some Schwalbes off CRC, i'm solidly convinced schwalbe has a superior DH tire viz dirty dan and muddy mary in gooegy gluey compounds. Soz to the OP as this is abit byond the scope of his question, but worth mentioning if shopping around for tires as they use the same compounds for both the DH and XC tires. The sidewall protection on the schwalbes are simply superb.

Maybe now with the improved formula, but in the past Nobby Nics were known for shredding their sidewalls easily.

Depends what works for you? Done nearly every race in SA and find over the last couple of years this has worked for me...my2c

If no mud...race king 2.2 on front and back.

If mud...mountain king 2.2/2.4 on front and Maxxis ignitor or Kenda on the back 2.1 on the back

Maxxis Aspen LUST (tubeless) version if you can find them in SA as a front tyre would work well

Schwalbe Nobby Nic tubeless version but they are just stupidly expensive.

From my own experience the Kenda Nevegal aka "Nevergo" is not an ideal XC racing tyre...

Are you sure there is now an Aspen in LUST ?

If so, where can I get a pair and how much ?

No particular affinity to maxxis. Just popped into LBS and the guy suggested mountain kings 2.2 rear and race kings 2.4 front. Any thoughts on this?

Wrong way around buddy, the mountain kings go front and the race kings go rear, you want the grip in front and the lesser rolling resitance at the back on a xc bike. Personally i bought monorails took them out once and sold them the same day, I think they suck.

You should be fairly confused by now with all the different options

For what its worth I used to run Larsen TTs front and rear and was very very happy with it. Tried Crossmark when I couldn't find Larsens and hated it on the front (be assured that it is not purely down to your positioning on the bike.) Changed the front for a Monorail and combined with the Crossmark rear it worked very well for me.

Same here, Larsen front and back, had a Crossmark on the rear and that also worked well for the dry conditions where I am.

I am sure you right sbout the mountain king front and the race king back. I prob just got confused. They are pretty expensive tyres at about R500 each.

Oh ja, I saw that, would rather go UST though as I'm planning to do the whole Stans thing. You have that combo hey covie? Any feedback? Did you use the UST for your conversion or just the regular ones?

I'm a huge fan of large tyres, just be careful

Maxis Aspen 2.35, and Vredestein Killer Bee 2.4 DO NOT FIT on my anthem adv.

The aspen fitted for a few hours, but overnight streached. on the fron, anything will fit.

Love the aspen, runing a std one tubless up front, bitch to seat, but 100% since.

Hate crossmark
