so I just finished putting a MTB together, need to put a slap sock on something, are these still 'accepted', or do you have to wrap an old inner tube or some roadie bar tape to have any trail cred?

or must you go bareback and deal with chips like the pro's?

you want your bike to stay in good condition or let it look like a chipped piece of poo? A pro gets a new frame when the old one is worn....you dont't, so use the slapsock as it is you that worked hard to buy a new frame

I dont like the tube/tape methods, gets too dirty under it.

Prefer a slap sock you can take off and clean and also chuck if it looks tatty.

The normal meterial socks are iffy, i found a nice one from cannondale, they have an xc model that has rubber over the velcro, so it straps to the stay and the chain hits the rubber. Silent, doesnt get damaged by the chain and the rubber is easy to clean from chain oil/dirt.

They are available in sa and crc - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=26182

I am a noob, I see my frame has a transparent decal where the chain hits the frame. Is this not sufficient? Do I need a sock?

Under no circumstances should you buy a slap sock or similar product. This is so lame. It is worse than a giant spoke protector, side reflectors in your spokes and a platform pedals with straps - all together.

Real MTBers use old tubes that are skillfully wrapped around the chainstay and fixed with...wait for it.....not cable ties, but by tucking the end uder.

If you have anything other than that protecting your chainstay, you are simply not hardcore. May as well go ride on the road, or ride a Vespa or wear socks or something poofterish like that.

Well said, and I fully agree. Mine lasted since April, but the three towers took it's toll on them last weekend.

I have both an old piece of tube AND a el cheapo thing from Sportsman (Says Velo on it and cost a paltry R50). I use both as the tube absorbs some noise and the sock thing looks better and you can just take it off and clean it. That el cheapo sock has done a good few thousand k's and is still fine!

i use a tube too. but with a cable tie. sure it wears a bit, and its cheap to replace.

but tucking in both ends, id like to know how to do that.
