Can anyone tell me how safe going up Bain's Kloof in the early morning from a crime perspective? I'll be in the town for a few days and would like to ride at 5 am to the top and drop back into Wellington.

Shouldn't be a problem.

Don't think it would ever be an issue, maybe payday Friday evening.

Thank you! 👍 Planning on going up on Tuesday and Wednesday. Pockets should be empty by then.

If im you i would climb the pass from both sides. Start in Wellington and go over from that side as then you get to enjoy the descent into Worcester side. And then turn around at the end of the road and climb from the other side.

Exactly what I did yesterday.. turned around at the campsite, then it works out at 50km with 900m vertical gain. Some mates went to Ceres for coffee and back over the pass, then it works out on 110km with around 1200m climbing.

The pass looks good..no issues at all in the early morning and should be little to no cars on the road then, you'll hear them coming on from far, so really safe. I've never seen any trouble makers on the pass apart from baboons. You might encounter a few baboons as daylight breaks and they scavenge the bins at the picnic spots. I once met a group of around 50, then you just stand still and let them do their thing. Or turn around and descend 100-200m if they get too close, then carry on with your ride when the passed. My wife and I even run the pass from time to time without issues.

If coming from outside town, I'd park closer to Bainskloof.. Cafe La Vita is at the foot of the pass and perfect for post ride meals/beers.

Must do the du Toitskloof - Slanghoek - Bains loop again - ‘Two Passes’ - as it’s been a while.

Sublime roadworks completed by those engineering geniuses. Kudos.

Road surface on Bains is immaculate. Honestly cannot believe how smooth that surface is. I’ve done that climb 3 times now since January and again I will reiterate, the descent especially the worcester side with the bends is just chef’s kiss. There is also hardly any cars on that road so you can essentially go balls to the walls.

Now we just need them to redo Du Toitskloof as well.
