make sure you buy an extra battery for the magichshine light, the 816 has about 3 hours on the max setting.

I am happy with my 816, i have played around with the brightness to get the most out of the battery. I only ride on full setting when i get technical decents, otherwise just ride with the centre light on 75%.

I'm an Exposure fan - got two of their lights, although not the WhiteEye. I think you still need to buy a light - the WhiteEye is just an addon for something like the Joystick.

Ditto, I am using the MaxxD, awesome light, good battery life and no wires :)

One day when I win the lotto - there are some new, great looking Exposure lights out there - all just a bit beyond my budget.

To be honest, I can't beat that price on the 816 (I can't support a warranty if I did!) so buy that from them I reckon (assuming they do offer some kind of warranty backup). I can and do match their 808 price at R850 though and offer the helmet mount and extension cables at R25 each.

I got a magicshine light, although the wiring is 'cumbersome' it is seriously bright and you get a tail light with it. I got one from Morningside Cycles in Jozi for R2,200 for the 1400 lumen one and went for my first night ride in Sabie on Friday. It was just the bomb, so bright that I'm surprised that I didn't burn the forests down, although the dude in front of me got some serious burns on his legs haha!

Hey hubbers,

Im wanting to get some decent lighting for the fast approaching 24hour in december. However I do not want to pay these rather huge prices they seem to have attached  , I am looking at paying round R500 for a front light.

Question. Does any1 know of a really decent light in that price range? (can add pics of the light and beam it gives off if you like).

CWC has a 'Sigma Mirage EVO Pro Light' For R500.

CRC has a light called the 'Exposure WhiteEye Front Light'. It goes for round R350 (b4 taxes)

Any1 have experience with these lights?

OR

Is it better to go with a light build kit? I remember a thread being on here about guys building their own. Good idea? general cost involved?

depends if the race is a one off or you plan to do lots of nightriding.

In general it's not worth building your own anymore, for the time and money rather go magicshine. if you think the prices are indecent, you haven't been in the lighting game long!

If you're sticky on the $$$ required, there's plenty that will work at that level, and something from CRC is probably the most cost-effective. We all survived with 30 lumens until a few years ago, so you don't have to be bullied into the best stadium light systems.

Alternatively if this is a once off event for you, then it might even be worth getting a decent headtorch and fitting it to your helmet.

you could try shop around more, but here's 85 lumens at R600

you'll find plenty of use for it in the future.

I got a Magicshine MJ808 from Edge Design/ Shaun - I use it for road and it's awesome and that's on the dim setting!! I even got cars to dim their lights on approach when they were driving with brights (and the light was focused on the road - not straight ahead into the drivers' eyes).

Just bought the MJ-816 from Easy Bike, totalled around R1000 rondt....... Am absolutely stoked with it, at that price it is unbeatable!

Looking at your avatar it's illuminating from the wrong angle :P

If I need a lot of light I just lift my bum off the saddle.

Im the strongest in our lil 4man team so I can see me doing 2-4 laps at a time each lap is about 30-35mins (maybe even 40mins at night) long, so that roughly equates to (giving it a chance here) 160mins (2h40) ride time, then I can charge while the others do their stints.

Im a roadie but enjoy the MTB quite a bit so i do a few events between the road events. we did the 24hour last year but I crashed out on my second lap and didn't get to doing any night riding (not gonna try 2hard to get fastest lap this year lol). but I think we are all making this our little year end event every year, so instead of 94 being the end of year we making a social event like the 24hour our last 1 (Much nicer i recon)

You can get a decent headlight (LED Lenser) at the local kooperasie for about R450. I think they are distributed by Awesome Tools (the Leatherman guys).

Some members of our team used it on the Transbaviaans and the light was good enough coming down Bergplaas. Don't know how it will be on singletrack though.
