    Hi.

It's the lead up to CTCT and there were "thousands" of cyclists on the various parts of the route yesterday.

While this isn't surprising, the absence of obvious club activity was noticable and has been for a while now.

    Are clubs no longer fashionable.?

Are people opting for smaller informal groups.?

Which clubs are still active in Cape Town and Southern Suburbs.?

It all depends what you are looking for in a club.....

There are still plenty active clubs in the southern suburbs

Cyclewize (est 2022) still growing day by day

    Giants

    Club100

CycleLab but looks like they moving North to the new shop

Some clubs operate on Saturdays so thats also why you might not see them

So my 99er experience was shortlived

Started in E having not doing many races other than CTCT and regular Killarney.

High speed crash at 36km on the R304. Could see the accident about to happen as someone came across my front wheel. The rest I don't remember

4 of us in the ambulance taken to durbanville medi clinic. 2 fractured collarbone, and hip with bad road rash . I came of the lightest nothing broken but bad bruising.

The response time of the ambulance was pretty quick 3 -4min

Our bikes were tagged and taken back  to the  start where a friend collected

WELL DONEcl   to the organisers for the quick response to an accident.

Time to recover now and heal, road rash not pleasant at all. My first big accident after many years of cycling.

Cracked frame and damage but thankful it wasn't worse.

    Why we cycle

One of our club members also fell in this incident but managed to cycle on

    Get well soon Tjommie

Funny story .... took a quick ride along the cost this morning on the Harley and thought to myself it would be rather cool to ride as a lead bike, or marshal bike .... it would also be far cooler for the event than those run of the mill vanilla riders on BMW GS's :P

They use the GS because they know it will finish the entire route without breaking down

yeah exactly what I thought, if this means I can take the wife on her ebike and daughter on a FEVA seat after my race, I'm all for it. But if min age is still 11 meh. Also don't mean to moan at anything they throw at us, but the route doesn't seem quite as beautiful as the actual tour, and you do it both ways (not a tour)

Flying down Wynberg Hill........... you mean we gotta go back up there......

    LOL

Much easier to do a sub3 if they shorten the route

For some reason the casual athletes seem to be more interested in the more extreme events than in the easier ones, so don’t really see how a shortened route is supposed to bring more entries

In my small circle of friends I already have 4 who are scared about the 109 (new to cycling)

We might not agree on a shorter route but there certainly is a market for one

If they’re seriously considering adding a shorter option then that just shows how the demand has decreased. I personally dont think this is the right move but let’s wait for the official announcement before jumping to conclusions.

"Short and sweet" already says what's coming. I too have mixed opinions if this is the announcement, on the 1 hand yes it will appeal to more casual cyclists on the other hand you supposed to work towards the 109 thats the idea. I guess this is the fallout after covid, these events need entries they need the funds to host future events

Personally they messed up with that late fee they wanted to charge, probably pissed off alot of people with that one

Re-open the race tracks that used to allow cyclists to train on them - like Kyalami - evening riding was huge leading up to events.

Do cycling advocacy in schools and get people involved at grass roots level. If you had to go out to the cradle on a Saturday morning on a good warm summers day you will see road cycling is alive and well. Its because it was safe there at a a time. There are hundreds of people out there running and riding.

But events have become over done - seedings complex. roads dangerous and therefore you need to refresh the views.

For example - race around Kyalami - all safe. Races in the cradle - still much safer than other places.

Killarney here in CT has cycling on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Tuesday is PPA Thursday some night series

I get that but Cape Town has loads of different routes that are quality beautiful. Also, I’m not suggesting change the entire route, but just certain parts. Switch it around a bit.

As an example, instead of going left off the M3 towards Fishhoek, maybe go right and over Ou Kaapse Weg and then over Black Hill and then around the peninsula. Or climb Red Hill as an option. Or perhaps come over Constantia Nek as we did for a year. There are loads of things that can be tweaked just for some variety.

The problem is they shortened the finish up Odendal as well. So you basically removed both climbs and that actually made the 99er a bit more unique than the other Paarl Wellington loops.

Going over ou kaapse and blackhill............LOL

The original post was about getting more people to enter the races, not back out of them hahahaha

Awesome news as i recently just returned and never had a chance to complete my entry.

Do you think the late entry will still be @ R425 ?, or will it in crease ?

    Regards

Dont forget the R50 CSA day license

  10. It shouldn't be happening on a community forum, this has happened to me a few times on gumtree where you pass the deal onto the buyer at a "special price" only to see the item appear later the same day at a marked up price.

I get the whole buy and sell routine and okes are making a side hustle but I wouldn't like it on a forum such as this

I'm not going this year, but I always wonder what people would want from an expo?

Well here are a few examples

    1. Sales on items, not overcharging everything I saw last night could be bought online cheaper

    2. Not selling old un-used stock that no one wants (all ex covid stock)

    3. Its an "expo" which means exhibition....there was nothing on show ? Expo what's new to cycling etc.

However the organizers also need to look at their fees for space probably too expensive and puts off potential stall holders from taking spaces
