If you don’t understand the product correctly and how the benefits work together, then it will be frustrating

Its frustrating because they make it so complicated to understand. And years ago when I was about to join discovery I was trying to get all the info I needed to make a decision, but all that info appeared to be hidden behind membership access, so you could only know what you're getting AFTER you join.

IMHO Discovery are surfing their previous reputation of being great with great benefits, but they've over complicated something that should be straight forward. Maybe they're trying to keep their brokers in jobs.

The original milestone was 21 and club21 was formed to commemorate and celebrate the loyalty of riders who completed those 21 tours in 1997 for the 1998 tour.
the 10, 30 and 40 milestones were added as even number celebratory points. The next commemoration point will be 50 tours in 4 year’s time.

I don’t know why they added 10 and 30. Probably to incentivise people who were wk seeing why they’d do another ride around the peninsula and pay for it.

Thanks DD, I thought as much, looking forward to chasing the 50 jersey when I'm in my 70's :)

I am glad they added the 10.  Gives me something to work towards.

After our second tour we made a goal of doing 10 tours in a row, we managed 12 before we skipped any. But back then there was no medal for doing 10, you got a yellow number and that was it.

  4. For someone that has done this "race" as many times as I have, this is a silly question, but one I do not know the answer to.

    Why are the milestone 10 - 21 -30 - 40 ? Why 21 and not 20 ?

    Following this thread....

The 947 2024 would've been my first proper "long distance" road race. But I am now reconsidering due to the safety of riders aspect. Me and my wife ride together, and obviously she cannot keep up with me after the first 30-40km of a hard-ride. When we do group rides on weekends I need not to worry about her, because I know she will be in a group and not left alone. But, when it is only me and her doing a long ride, I tend to hold back a lot after the first 30-40km to ensure that we either ride together. I then end up doing a Zone1&2 ride that started out as high intensity. Her day remains productive, and mine becomes a recovery ride.

Just because of this safety concern, I will never be able to focus on my own ride & effort.

What do you fine people suggest we do.

    1) Don't worry, and just ride 94.7
    2) Move our focus to CTCT 2025 and train towards this event.

PS we also have a Suikerbos(sie), this side of the border which I enjoy riding, but the wife hates it.

I dont see how training for 947 differs to training for CTCT in your scenario.

Also the safety aspect only comes into play outside of the event itself, i.e. to and from the parking, and despite the reports on here I've managed to not be affected by it. But it is there, this is Joburg, so you do need to know about it and be vigilant.

This might get me down voted a helluva lot, but it's like blokes winning the female swimming categories and breaking records.....meh....not into it tbh....

Those first 2 lines of the caption read like someone needing to add words to their essay to reach the minimum word count. WTF???

Yes i guess it up to the individual whether or not he/she want to to do the ride.

Me for one, i usually finish both bottles during a race so dehydration/fatigue will most certainly get better of me.

Yeah I don’t see it as being to good for the body

You can train if you want. Don’t think there’s any restrictions.

A lot of Muslim pro’s play sport and fast at the same time. They won’t be at their best clearly but you can if you want to.

    thanks.

So you could, if you wanted to, still do the ride at a more sedate pace. But risk dehydration and/or bonking.

    There is exception for illness.

No exception for sport whether or not it’s recreation.

and in terms of training ? any restrictions ? (other than the fact that you've got depleted nutrition levels and therefore cant train 100%)

Just had a look at the calendar. 2025 & 2026 will be during Ramadan.

2027 could be touch and go. Even then it would be doing the race with no/minimal training. If you have an indoor trainer it will obviously help but you’d still not be race fit.

So for me, trying for a sub 3 again, I would have to wait until 2028 🤦🏻‍♂️

excuse my ignorance on the matter, what are the restrictions on you for Ramadan ?

I know of the fasting, but does it not allow exception for sport or illness ? Or is this level of sport considered more recreation and therefore no exception.

  11. Entire thread dominated by pricing and pricing comparisons.

Jewbecca summarized everything at the top of the first page.

But I'll add to the debate.

Last year we launched our new hot hatch, close to 1bar. people had the same reactions, to expensive, I can get XYZ for cheaper wadda wadda wadda. We are still selling them, the price has creeped up to over a bar and they are still selling. And when we launch the replacement for this in a few years we'll get the same reactions.

Back to 2 wheels and the recently launched version of our superbike is close to R600k, its been out a month, all 3 units that were allocated to us have been sold. The one is not even going to be assembled, the guy is just buying it as a collectors item.

Brands will sell what their product at a price they have researched that their target market will buy them at. There will always be the initial shock reaction to the price, but once that desirability hits, the price is justified in their eyes and the product bought.

what was the early bird bird entry last year - can't recall at present - Think it was R650?

Dont recall, I know when I tried to enter yesterday from the CTCT website it took me to the 2024 entries and it stated R750, I had to follow the link from the email to get to the 2025 entries.

Right, so my mate is doing his 21st CTCT in March. We started riding together many years back, somehwere along the line I skipped one that he did, so my 21st is next year.

Anyway, he is very unfit and refuses to have me ride slowly with him, but I think it would be awesome if we cross the line together.

So what I'm thinking of doing is riding my race, then cycle back to somewhere along the route, for instance Camps Bay or somewhere else easily accessible, and then ride with him to the end.

    My question is 2 fold

    a) other than doing the entire route a second time, where would be the easiest place to cycle back to ? I dont really want to be that guy cycling in the opposite direction to everyone else, so somewhere with an alternative route to get to.

    b) what will happen with my timing when I cross the finish line a second time an hour or 2 after I crossed it the first time ?

So what I landed up doing.

Headed back to V&A where we parked, removed timing board and front facing number, than headed up and took main road through to Camps Bay.

Sat under a tree there and waited for him. From there we rode back together.

He was unfit and sick leading up to the race, I think the moral support of me riding with him the last little bit really helped.

Waiting for more pics to come through on action photo, but I think we got some great ones crossing the line together.

oh, I skipped the second coke and got a funny look from the medal lady when I declined a second medal.

seems to work well. Will add some safety  pins for security. The acid test is when the jersey is loaded with stuff

with my shirt it was a bit tricky to get everything lined up the way I wanted, but that is a function of the shirt not the pins.

they seemed to work well, held the number in place and has not left any permanent marks on the shirt.
