  1. I hit my goal last month and have been toying with the idea of lowering my GOAL weight to 85 kg from 90kg .I have recorded a 88.6 kg during this month but that was after a good ride on a hot day .. If i lower my goal during the challenge and don't achieve it but still end up on a lower weight than my original goal will it still allow me to stay at the top of the log .
  2. Something I noticed this month.. From around the Argus MTB Challenge in March I did long races almost every weekend or every second weekend ranging from 70 to 120km. Then during the week I would rest up for the next race and maybe go for one short ride of 20km between them. My weight basically stayed the same from March to end September. Since Karoo 2 Coast I decided to cool it a bit with races for the rest of the year and shifted to rather doing 20km-40km rides 6-7days a week. I think that's what's making the big difference now and kick started the weight loss again. I dont race anymore but train 6 days a week . Mon, Tues Wed i do 35km daily (road ) Thurs 60km Fri 0 Sat 70/80 km. (Off road ) Sun 40 km (road fast ) .That has been my routine since i started in July last year doing less km's and finally getting to my 1000 +_ km per month . Doing lower km's but more regularly is more beneficial . I ride the same circuit daily so i change my intensity ,by either spinning , pushing hard or a combination of both on the route .My off road routes differ on every ride as we have a lot of farms we ride through . My one training partner is only 60 kg and very fit . When he puts the hammer down on a climb i hook his wheel and stay with him for as long as possible . Having done this since starting to ride with him i am now able to stay at least 80 % of each climb we attempt .( i will beat him one day up a climb ) .
  3. With my son here for the month and having had the hernia op it was difficult to maintain my weight . I still managed 800 plus km so the training was done . With Daniel here my wife baked at least 3 cakes a week and of course i had to have my fill of those . A take out was on the cards at least once a week (pizza , burgers , fish and chips ) Training harder and more intense was my way of coping with the excess food intake and i think it worked as i only gained half a kg . This month will be a better one for me . I want to reset my goal but not sure if i can its worth it for the last two months .
  4. The Vasbyt 165 km . It was the the longest PPA sanctioned race for fun riders / licensed and triathletes in the 80's . That last climb up towards the Lynnwood Drive In ( Start /Finish ) was many a unfit riders achilles heel . I road it 3 times , ended 13 th overall every time but first Vet always in about a 4hr 10 min time .

    Snakes

This has been a talking topic among our group for the last few weeks as we have come across a few ( dead ) Rinkhals and Mamba ( he should not be on the highveld ) while out on our trails in the far East Rand . I was in contact with Arno Naude ( a snake guru ) and he is offering a snake awareness course .This is the message i put on our whats app group yesterday and am still awaiting replies .If there is interest in for this i will get Arno to take it further as a project As Mtbikers we often come across snakes . Arno Naude is offering a snake awareness and basic first aid course . Arno is a leading expert on snakes and lectures at the University of Pretoria . His course is 4 to 5 hours and he will come to the East Rand to do the course on any days chosen by groups . This is a first for Mtbikers and R600 per person is a good deal . Check him out snakebiteassist.co.za A pic of one of the offenders below
  6. I managed my sub 90kg last month weighing in at 89.2 kg . I topped 900km in training and managed a sub hour 30km ride . Heart rate is constant at 50 resting with a BP of 128/65 and this was confirmed by my physician to day at my 6 monthly visit . The bad news is i had a inguinal hernia ( groin ) removed on thursday so am off my bike for a week until next week when i see the surgeon on Monday . I start training a bit easier but ease into my routine by mid month . I was thinking of resetting my goal of 90 to 85 by year end but then if i don't achieve it im going to be disappointed . What do you think ?
  7. This thread is good reading as one realises that what you think is good and sugar free is actually counterproductive to weight loss . I love a coffee at about 8 at night and have my own mixture . 2 spoons Nestle coffee , 1/2 spoon cocoa and 2 spoons cremora topped with fat free milk to give it some colour . i did not realise cremora had a sugar content .. Im going to stop with the Cremora and just add some warm milk . Lets see what happens during the next week
  8. My son put a article written by a Dr / Dietician .( cant find link ) I essence it was about natural foods / fruit sugar content . I have been on my own mission /diet for 14 months and have hit that plateau as i said before . I eat 3 fruits a day , tea time , lunch time and tea time again . Normally apples and oranges . On our 2 long weekly rides i use dates as food . The article suggested only one fruit daily which i have done . The 12 dates i eat on rides contain the highest amount of sugar so i cut that down to only 6 . In less than a week i have lost 1.8 kg .Im feeling strong and even went out today on the road a rode up Fishers Hill . Short but at least a 5% gradient of which we don't have to many on the East Rand . I might even re set my goal weight .
  9. The ultimate professional , won all the grand tours , all the classics , world champ and got doping as well Made a career out of the sport he loves My next road frame i buy will be a Merckx .
  10. I hit that plateau were you hover at a weight ( mine 91 kg and target was 90 from August ) and try as i will i am just not able to get there . My training has is still the same ( i cant afford more time 800km per month ) . My food intake has not changed , i still watch the type of foods and quantities i eat . My son and daughter in law are both health fanatics ( personal trainers for body building and power lifting in Australia ) and they has offered to look at the type of food i eat in a week . I did a spread sheet with everything i ate or drank in a week . They will analyse it and give me feed back . It will be interesting to see the result and suggestions as to what i am doing wrong .
  11. He nearly had to run home . His frame broke on one of the jumps on the Kempton track .
  12. Our Thursday Ou Toppies riding group has a new name and jerseys . The CRANKY OLD BASTARDS .
  13. I have lost 32 kg in 14 months . I did not follow a certain planed diet but used a simple regime of cutting out or down on white foods , packaged food and less meat . In general its lesser portions and no snacking and if you have the urge to snack eat a fruit . Exercise is paramount , i started by training 10 km per day ( 50 per week ) and am now doing 800 plus km per month . My goal is 90 kg but im sure as i get fitter ill adjust that down as i can remember how easy it was when i was racing in the 80 and 90's and weighed 70kg .
  14. I have been doing an experiment with my liquid (tea /coffee ) intake . I generally drink 5 cups of black tea with sweetener in daily . In august i decided to change 3 cups daily to coffee with sweetener and two black tea . I use half a cup of hot milk and two spoons of coffee creamer to get a bit of froth in the cup ( looks better ) . Since changing to this regime my weight loss has slowed down dramatically . Im battling to break the 92kg barrier which i had set as a target for end August . What do you guys think is the negative to coffee compared to tea if any . Next month i'm going back to my old ways and will report it here .
  15. These scammers are active on any site with goods for sale . I am on a few classic car forums and you get the same "oil rig " or working in" Papua New Guinea " story about the surprise purchase .Classic car parts of old era SA build cars are of particular interest to them because of the rarity .
  16. Welcome lurker HAHA . What area are you in . We are always wanting to have MTBikers join us on Saturday mornings for a 60 to 80km ride in Benoni .
  17. This is a perfect schedule to follow . The training in kilometers can be set according to your current fitness level but keep gauging and keeping a record of your training . Hygiene is a big factor when away from home so make sure to not skimp on it . The type of food you normally eat , stick to it build up your immune system . As suggested do few smaller stage races to get the feel of it , long days in the saddle , eating later than normal times and sleeping in a tent on a unfamiliar mattress .Good luck .
  18. 200grams loss for the worst month of the year . Cold and a flood in my house that resulted in 5 bedrooms having to be re floored and lots of furniture replaced .As much as i stayed focused and kept to my required food intake and training , i still managed 776 km for the month . My goal for June was 92 kg but missed it , so July i will do some extra training to get to my July goal of 91 kg .
  19. Congrates that some serious drop in weight . I was at 124kg in june last year and today im at 92 kg with the much the same regime as you have followed except i cycled a lot more . I also hit the 95kg plateau and thought that was it for me ( im 66 yrs young an old cyclist from the 60's ) Clothing shopping was a shock as you say to actually believe you fit in those sizes . My goal is 90 kg but i might rethink that if i decide to ride a stage race . Dont give up its fun and rewarding .
  20. Seventy is a good weight depending on your height . My racing weight was 74kg and after a 3 or 4 day stage race i would be 72kg or below and then found trying to stay there and have the same stamina was not possible . I would follow my normal training and eating habits and come back to 74kg ready for the next race . We raced saturday and sunday with a short mid week club race on a wednesday (40km max ) . I still have flab and love handles around the midriff - will I ever be rid of it? No they never go away no matter how much i trained
  21. Had a good month training topped out at over 900 km .at an average of 25kph on and off road mixed . Having 2 family and one staff members birthday in May did not help my sweet food intake and then also my youngest son coming home from Afghanistan and wanting to eat real home made mom cooked meals just added to my frustration . So when i got on the scale this morning i was very surprised at my the result ,92 4kg which is below my target for May .
  22. Bought a Sido 2 last month and have done about 700km with it . I previously rode a Ghost Lector 2978 carbon .I wanted to go aluminum and the Silverback suited my budget and geometry looked similar . They also weight the same . I only regret is that its also black I wanted something more bright in colour but that can be rectified when respray time comes . Loving it so far .
  23. That happened to me yesterday but in reverse . Advertised a new oil cooler for 2 months ago for R400 . Got no bites so i dropped the price to R250 . Got a call the next day and the buyer said he would take it . He arrived yesterday and i handed him the cooler for inspection . He then pulled out his wallet and counted out R380 and asked if he could do a EFT from my PC . I said don't worry about the R20 . He obviously saw the original add for R400 not the dropped price . So i got more than i had wanted the second time around HAHA .
  24. Selling retro and old bike spares and clothing apparel is a niche market but with a lot of collectors out there looking and prepared to pay only the right price .
