  1. Lube on the chain, couple of drops FD & RD derailer (I also take a ear bud, dip it in oil and use it in the heads and exposed threads of any bolts so there is no rust or anything). Little bit of oil on my M520 pedals.. Also a bit on the moving points of the quick releases as well as moving sections of brake and gear levers (where logical and not likey to create a grinding paste). All excess is then wiped off. Grease on the seatpost, little bit on the stem and clamping area for the handlebars. Bit on the quick release axles. Grease on bearings, including jockey wheels. Smidgen on the seat rails and clamp.
  2. A little off topic but when I wanted a cheap rear wheel to use on my bike a few years back none of the bike shops wanted to sell me a rear wheel on its own. It could only be bought as a 'set' and everyone wanted to sell me fancy wheels (even though my M475 hub did well over 15,000km and I wanted the same again). I wound up having to drive all the way out to Solomons in Pretoria North as they were happy to sell me one wheel on its own.
  3. I use car shampoo with a bucket and sponge, no hose for me on my Trance because of the suspension points. I finish with Mr Min and a quick lube of various parts should they require it. Regardless of how the bike frame looks all moving parts are always well maintained. No keen on long walks home....
  4. Its gone now!
  5. Dont worry, 85% of other drivers also dont bother using their indicators anyway, you probably prevented confusion on the roads.....!
  6. Same with a new deore cassette and a Sram chain. Took a couple of rides. Its almost as though it needs to bed in again?
  7. I have just done a drive down past Helen Joseph hospital to Atlas studios and it appears that taxis now run the bus lanes and if you dont have a phone against your ear or in your hand then you are not welcome! I am fully in favour of a law that allows the cop to take your phone, remove the sim card and then smash the phone onto the floor. This is the only way people will change when it comes to using a phone while operating a car.
  8. I have just been informed that a staff member at a local business was held up and assaulted by 6 males armed with sticks and robbed of his bike last Friday while travelling back home. The bike was a normal Raleigh and not worth anything to anyone other than its upset owner. I suppose the thieving swine got R20 for it. Please be aware of the area down near the train station and beyond. The incident was on the railway line service route that heads west out towards Koesterfontein. The area is close to the local RDP housing at Ga-Mogale as well as a squatter camp on the Rietpoort Road (I have also seen small kids in this section sniffing glue out of plastic bags, pretty sad), once you head out on the service road there are 3 houses along the road and then its pretty isolated for the next 5kms to the Koesterfontein road. It has been reported to the SAPS. This occured last Friday (7 March 2014). Personally I think (hope!) its an isolated incident as I ride this route almost everyday but there is no harm in being a bit more awake in this area.
  9. Did you remove any parts of the headset? Not sure if it applies to your but one on my GT has a plastic insert/wedge thing that needs to go in nice and square otherwise you cant get the 'looseness' of the headset out. I almost rock the front back and forth to get it in snug and then I can add the stem, press it down and tighten down the top. It would be the part top right on the image.
  10. Dont be afraid to ask your mates to help you.... They can help point out where you went wrong....
  11. Spend as much as you can, however be aware that cycling isnt for everyone, so spend wisely! I have a few mates that made expensive purchases but didnt get into cycling for whatever reason.
  12. I have used lip ice on a friends seatpost before, better that then hearing creaking for another 30km home!
  13. My friend had a short contract with the Post Office to service their little motorbikes, the state of those things was shocking! Ripped seats, buckled wheels, brakes down to the metal, chains neglected, sticky throttles, borken mirrors! I think it would be worse for the guys to have geared bikes as evidently when things dont work you still have to use them as the Post Office seems too tight to foot the bill for general running repairs....
  14. Thats why it seems a bit odd that there was apparently 6 or 7 guys in the back of the van and no-one did anything?
  15. So you are saying that the van had six or seven passengers and not one got out?
  16. Quiet at work today so I got onto Hello Peter, found this entry from last year, does anyone know anymore about it? On Saturday the 06.07.2013 I was cycling on the Silvermine road, Ou Kaapse weg when I came across an altercation between a cyclist and a driver of a white bakkie . I asked the driver what the issue was, only to be told to F off and mind my own business before I get Fd up. I asked the cyclist what was going on but he was un sure. The drivers female companion told me that they are rangers and to move on and mind my own business. The cyclist was trying to get his permit out but the driver ranger was pulling his bike away from under him when all of a sudden the driverranger grabbed the cyclist by the throat and punched him in the face and threw the cyclist into the road. I tried to separate the ranger from the cyclist when a group of passing cyclists help pull the ranger off the cyclist. The cyclist, with blood pouring from his face, asked me to please get hold of the police as he had just been assaulted and his phone did not work in the mountain area. Unfortunately neither did my phone. The cheek of the matter was that the ranger placed the cyclist under arrest but not after kicking his bike all the way to the back of the bakkie and just throwing the bike into the back. Strong arm ? https://hellopeter.com/san-parks/complaints/assault-by-ranger-on-cyclist-1132761
  17. Had this on my previous bike, and it is indeed a marvel of crappy engineering!
  18. You should try some Go chain wax from Bearing Man if you like Squirt, pretty much the same stuff but a lot cheaper though and a bigger bottle, around R150 for 500ml.
  19. I thought it all came down to what your discs are able to use?
  20. Looks like a busy day for them! Their 2 minutes of fame....! Although I see there are a couple of proper choice comments on their Facepalm page!
  21. Well thanks to The Hub and the classifieds I just received my brake pads bought at a great price from a fellow Hubber!
  22. I use gear oil, supposed to be a 'heavier' oil? I dont know, but I do know that its around R40 for 500ml compared to about R100+ for a small bottle of squirt I used to use. Thats a considerable saving when you are cleaning chains on 3 bikes quite often! I had a litre left over from a gearbox service so I might as well use it! I clean my chains after every ride and remove the chain for a thorough cleaning after every 3-5 rides (depending on the riding conditions). I add one drop (i used an old Q20 drip bottle) to every roller, spin the cranks about 20 times and wipe off the excess. No issues so far....
  23. I see the video is starting to appear quite a bit on Facepalm.....! Leverage corp, Movesafe Cycling, Bicycle Safety...
