  1. Im sure they will sell you 2014 models if you pay now. . . . .
  2. I have taken 15mm off each end of my anthem 29 er's bar. Feels much better now.
  3. I dont know who else was caught out by DSTV. I tried to record the UCI world champs. Watched until halfway through Minnaar's ride and then the rocording ended. I know they dont determine the timing but that does not mean I have to be happy about it. Ok I know the result. Just wish I could see the run. Must have been impressive.
  4. I run a Schwalbe tubeless at 1.6bar and I weigh 83kg. Never had a problem. I would check the calibration on your pressure guage. i know of people who rung theirs at 1.4-1.5 bar with no problems. I run on the original rims that came with my Anthem 29er. i have Bontrager tubeless rimstrips which makes for a tight fit of the tyre on the rim.
  5. Disappointing race of only 51 odd kilometres. Always a let down when the distances are shortened and you go to all the trouble of driving up from Jhb for the day. Might as well have ridden the Braamfontein spruit. Didnt enjoy the walk up the mountain. My sense is that there should be a green and red route and those who cannot ride it should cop out and take the chicken run. The Sun/ Lost City area seems set up for some great routes to ride. Im just disappointed that so little riding was possible. Dont get me wrong! The route was well marked, the marshalls were efficient and friendly. I just wanted more riding! Come on organisers, give us a complete route next year where we can ride, and get creative to stop the endless walking in singletrack. With all the potential of this area this is a race with great potential.
  6. Great start! Over time im sure it will become more compact and comfortable. Like cellphones. Love the idea!
  7. For a trust of this nature to have credibility it is important that the trustees are all independant professionals of the highest integrity. With the track record of the trustee mentioned in another thread with issues of lack of integrity in business dealings, I think the idea of contributing to this fund is a bad one. Great idea that should be set up as a non-profit entity by a legal or accounting firm with total transparency in terms of all financial matters.
  8. Thanks Dangle. This gives me a clearer idea. I seem to have been too close to the receiving end of the hype and as I dont buy the nonsense I was looking for someone who would describe the cycling aspect and not the posing. Thanks for taking the time and giving some insight. I now need to start looking at which bike to convert.. . . . . . . . .the build will be fun even if I still dont get the ss riding.
  9. I love cycling so maybe you need to resd yhe question again. I have s vintage mtb that I might convert to ss if I could understand why. At this point the build process, which I am sure to enjoy, is the only reason. Btw I have various bromponies. They are transport. Cycling is a passion!
  10. I get the riding singlespeed thing as a race class. I really get the beautiful hand built bikes, but they would be just as lovely if they had more gears. I dont get how singlespeed is superior to or the riders are more gifted/wonderful/exceptional than other cyclists. Wanting to only ride singlespeed seems like a step backwards. . . .almost like turning oil back into coal. . . . a bit pointless really! Now please explain to me, what am I missing?
  11. Yellow Saddles course is starting to pay for itself. Nice to be able to diagnose problems and fix them. Did a brakes and drivetrain setup for a friend on friday. No problems with the ride on saturday. It has also been a bit of an adventure collecting the tools I did not have to be able to do the services. Cant wait to have to do a wheel and hub or suspension bearing replacement. Something to sink my teeth into. Amazing the confidence I have in my abilities after the course. Next course will be shock servicing.
  12. Hoping someone can assist. A group of us is coming down for the Dirt Fest and in need of camping site close to the school as that is where i understand the ride takes place. Please assist with local camping facilities as we are from Joburg and dont know the area at all.
  13. Never had any problems myself so I would appreciate it if you could be specific. What did you ask to be done? What did you expect to get? What actually was done? I would like to make sure I dont experience the same problems. I am also sure Jonene would like the feedback. Not sure if she spends time on this forum?
  14. Dont know if it is relevant. I ride a giant anthem 29er medium. I am 1,77m tall. According to the giant frame sizing I am at the limit for the frame. Any shorter and I should ride a small. You do get used to it quickly though. Not as critical as a road frame imho
  15. Head spinning from all the terminology and definitions. I pedal my bikes, therefore I am
  16. ANYONE?
  17. 2 wheels and helmet time. Riding my mtb or motorcycle gets me to that place from where the world makes a lot of sense. The stress relief, the focus required to just stay alive on 2 wheels, the exhileration, freedom, sense of being alive and experiencing life at a visceral level. All of the above. But sometimes it is also a quiet cycle through the park with my loved ones , going nowhere slowly. Many of the best experiences of my life have been associated with 2 wheels!
  18. A race with 99% singletrack sounds like a big traffic jam to me. Where will people pass each other. Surely there needs to be more than 1% of the trail where people can pass?
  19. Does this actually mean that the carbon frame is over designed and could be lighter? No report of the aluminium frames failing. What am I missing?
  20. I also ride a giant 29 er with DT swiss rear hub. This weekend I stripped the hub and put more grease on the pawls. This has quitened the hub dramatically. Feels like a new bike now!
  21. I have just spent the past weekend on the bike maintenence course run by Johan of Yellow Saddles. I found it to be one of the best courses I have ever attended in terms of straight talk, practical advice followed by direct practice and debunking of popular cycling myths. The course runs over 2 whole days. To say that you get your money's worth would be an undertstatement. It covers the following: Bearings - in depth as these are at the heart of all moving parts of our bikes We removed and replaced bearings in BB, Hubs and headset as well as discussing the bearings in the suspension of our bikes. We removed our cranks and clusters and learnt to understand the mechanics of the derailleur as well as setting it up and installing of above. Chain and sprocket wear were covered in detail and I can only say that I have been fooled by the lbs mechanics into unnecessary replacements for the last time. Tools required for maintaining your own bike were also discussed as well as sourcing thereof at realistic prices. Overall the course was an eye opener. I believe that even if you dont want to maintain your bike yourself , you need to understand the mechanics lest you be ripped off . It will also help with diagnosis of what the problem is to speed up fixing problems. Biggest lesson for me is that I am always only 2-3 minutes away from a flawlessly running drivetrain. That in itself makes the course time well spent. I will be back for a refresher later in the year as well as going on the shock repair/maintenance course. Thanks Johan and the other delegates for making it an enjoyable learning experience.
  22. The difference between sealants was explained to me this way by Johan Bornman on a maintenance course. There are 2 types of sealants used in bicycle tyres namely latex based and glycol based. Latex is a natural plant sap which needs to be preserved otherwise spores get in and it rots. Ammonia is used as the basic preservation chemical. This mixture which is approximately ph neutral reacts by coagulating when exposed to acidity introduced by a co2 bomb and creating balls or coral structures. Co2 bombs should only be used to get home then the latex sealant needs to be replaced. Glycol sealants do not react to co2. They have a lifespan of most tyres but are slightly less efficient as they block puncture holes due to their viscosity but do not seal like latex which effectively bonds like a glue when sealing the hole. Catch 22. Latex seals better. Glycol lasts longer. Sounds like a 26v29er type debate all over again. Both are better than tubes imho.
  23. I am looking for an entry . Anyone got one but not going please pm me. Thanks
  24. If LA was guilty of doping I suppose Usain Bolt must be drowning in illegal substances. How else could his prodigious winning be explained. Some people are once in a generation athletes. Time we accept it. . . . Once the no2 sample is back from the lab.
  25. On my pc at work. Pm me if EldB doesnt send it to you?after all he is dodgy. . .
