  2. SANP proudly displays its empowerment objectives on its website which mantra seems to override issues of efficiency and environmental protection. This means that start up contractors with no track record or possibly skills or training are given potentially lucrative contracts to clear aliens and even supposedly maintain MTB trails at Tokai. The kind of thing Mark has outlined are the result. In a famous incident a couple of years ago TMNP paid an unknown contractor to work on Boulders I think it was. He/she/it did very little if anything of value and a chunk of cash that could have gone to real trailbuilders or even TokaiMTB was simply wasted. TMNP would rather work this way than employ full time well trained alien clearing and maintenance teams. It won't change anytime soon.
  3. I think any new Epic rider should hold out for one of the new 32" wheeled bikes. This will make up for almost any amount of lack of training or skills deficit and incur the envy of every other rider on those tiny 29er wheels...
  4. Why? Only worthwhile for a decent MTB experience if you can get wire bead tyres in a decent tread, casing and compound IMO. Can you?
  5. One of the favourite WC DH/enduro rim is the EX471 25mm ID which is not even the strongest out there. FR500's are the tough ones. I have a Spank Spike DH rim on the back of my enduro bike and its the strongest rim I've ever ridden. They don't do XC rims but if you're a heavy rider they are another option to beef up your wheel set especially out back. I decided to leave the soft but but well built WTB rim on the front of my bike and it has more dings than the Spank rear wheel.
  6. Cant resist - speak to Tawn Bewsher - I hear he has sponsorship packages going cheap. Maybe you can run for Endura SA or his Events Business. Be careful though - he's a bit of a slow payer...
  7. Precisely. There are of course quality differences between rims and if you're riding some alloy own brand Spesh, for instance, rims and not DT or equivalent, you could have issues. The fact that many if not the majority of DH and Enduro racers at WC level ride alloy rims over carbon should also inform your choices. Do Stans rims still exist? Their 6069 alloy rims are plenty tough too. A 32 spoke DT XC rim should cope with anything you can throw at it.
  8. I cant agree on the Lyne - we have a 100mm drop version on one of our bikes and its been flawless despite very little maintenance. Of course it may have seen less use than DnD's but it has no signs of wear and I havent had to change the keys in over 5 years. A little bit of side to side play, but that is actually normal for most dropper posts and is not a sign of a failing post.
  9. Lovely track for the XCO. They really need to can Leogang for XCO and DH. I thought the racing was excellent but its a pity our guys didn't do a bit better. What happened to Luke - 44th? Tyler jacobs got a 7th in u23 which was the top SA result I think. The DH was incredible - The Pinkbike video analysis on the finals is very insightful. Jackson Goldstone has won 3 in a row and exactly how he made up time on his nearest rivals is explained in the video.
  10. Deore (not XT) itself is also now wireless if you want it an even better price.
  11. Yes, and rider dependent. My bike is a 27.5 with 535mm CS length and with me at 188cm works better than ever with the 75mm rise bars. Bike set up is a fun science!
  12. As one enduro bike review website sometimes says - "The geometry encourages an active riding style to maintain weight over the front wheel". This is usually reserved for super slack #enduro bikes so unless your fork has more travel it should not have altered front end grip that much. Counterintuitively I have raised my bars with a 75mm rise Spank DH bar. This balanced the weight distribution and overall improved cornering grip. You could try the following: 1. Reduce the fork air pressure to run more sag and lower the front end increasing grip. 2. Add air to the rear shock to shift weight towards the front. 3. Run a grippier front tyre along with the above.
  13. Come on, battery, please?
  14. Spesh seems to be having an up to 50% off bike sale at the moment. Not sure if it is dealer specific but Freewheel in Kenilworth have been advertising it.
  15. Okay, moving on to some more exciting tracks later this month. Time Leogang did some work and created a more interesting track. That hillside has some amazing terrain. Same can be said of the DH course. Watch this highlights of the EDR race to see the kind of proper MTB tracks that exist there...
  16. UCI/WBD has a very good streaming service for R110 pm. Great if you hate ads and want instant access to replays.
  17. Leogang DHI time again. I am tempted to "Yawn" as this track is getting a bit stale for me but it will still be an interesting race. Spesh's young gun outshone the other two by miles last week and they will be looking to improve. Quite a bit of talk about how fast and risky the Loudenvielle track was. It claimed a few people and left some out of contention with broken bones. If it rains it will be a lottery at Leogang so lets hope it stays dry. Predictions?
  18. Lots of gravel climbs but the tech stuff looks like fun. XCC is on this evening followed by XCO on Sunday. Is AH racing? I suppose MVDP is still licking his wounds and also scared of being humiliated by an XCO track and the harsh armchair pundits on cycling forums all over again 🙂
  19. You can adjust the Shimano shift speed to mimic slow AXS shifting, just to remind yourself why the big S is better 🙂
  20. The spec of these entry level bikes is disappointing. I'm sure the shock and fork on the Stumpy for instance will last a while but things like hubs brakes and rims are usually even worse quality. Spesh no name rims are soft as he'll and the hubs I had chewed bearings. I'm on totally different wheels and brakes now. Basically my bike arrived with some components that simply weren't up to the purpose of the bike. Why not spec Deore brakes and heavy but strong rims?
  21. Anticipation is the name of the game in MTB. Change down - lower gear- before the incline if possible. The issue you will have with the 3x10 is the risk of chain drops when you go to the middle ring in an emergency down change or grinding gears when you try and change down at the back. Your best bet would be to rid yourself of the 3x10 and geat a Deore or MicroShift 10 speed 1x set up. Bomb proof and with enough range in the 11-46/8 cassette.
  22. Like a slippery seat. Lay off the Mr Min maybe?
  23. Is anyone subscribed and watching the racing? The coverage has been pretty good on the new streaming platform, bar some very poor coverage of the women's event yesterday. Enduro is alive and well too with live timing available and nice summary style recaps on Youtube. I think we are finally seeing a positive change in the DH after the end of the RB era. The racing is as hot as ever and despite the negativity around the changes, the new format is working very well. No more protected riders and a Q2 session adds pressure to perform.
  24. Good point - since most eBikes are pretty much trail/enduro bikes, many people are just going straight to E without trying the gateway drug...
