  1. As far as I can tell it was a family of 4. Father was about 100m infront of the rest of the family, when the attackers jumped out of the bush and went for the 3 women (mother and 2 daughters) riding behind. I have heard of quite a few incidents where people are found washing and bathing in the stream running through Fountains. There is a huge hole in the fence in the bottom corner close to the Gautrain service road where anyone that wants to, can gain access to Fountains.
  2. Just received word that a young cyclist (female) was attacked while riding at Fountains with her family. Apparently she was thown with a stone/rock, which struck her on her arm. Her parents have taken her to hospital to have the arm x-rayed. When her father gave chase the attackers managed to flee through the fence. I am not certain where exactly in Fountains the attack occured, so they could have gone through the massive hole in the fence near the Gautrain bridge, or across the R21 highway. Got an update: Some muscle damage in the arm as a result of the impact of the rock on her arm. Nothing appears broken.

  4. I use Win 7 64bit with GTC, and it works a charm. I have noticed that should I go into the device menu, and exit again it gives the same pop-up. Just select "keep the user profile in the device."
  5. This is what I get when googling the coords that you supplied. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/49476872/Capture.JPG

  7. I did the same with my right hand, falling off a bike while training. Orthdeadic surgeon told me that at my age he can put pins in or not, the result will be the same. Chose to forego the op, and had to wear a brace for 8 weeks. The hand hurts like hell in the cold, sometimes making it difficult to write or hold anything. My hand still looks funny with the knuckle not being where it is supposed to be. Good luck with your injury, and hope you have a full recovery.
  8. Yep, I am sure your bottles are all ok. You, on the other hand, might no be.
  9. My condolences to the kids, as well as Mr. D and the rest of the family. Merv was a friend when friends were few and far between.
  10. After an exhaustive and extensive (as well as expensive) study we have come to the conclusion that Milo is the recovery drink of choice for us. Not does it contain all the goodness you need to replenish whatever needs to be replenished, but it tastes good as well. It is also significantly cheaper that most of the supplemental potions that can be obtained from pharmaceutical companies wishing to jump onto the gravy train of sports nutrition.
  11. Line entries are available at the venue on the day.
  12. Forget the marshalls in the bush, what about the poor chaps standing in the sun waiting for riders to cross the finish line? Blokes like me!!! ... and the blokes that are manning the timing station waiting for some poor rider to complete the Ultra in about 11 hours instead of the intended 6.
  13. You should get yourself measured in a reputable bikeshop for the correct size of saddle. Then check whether you have the correct size saddle on your bike. Commonly the 3 sizes are 135mm, 143mm and 159mm (If I remember correctly.) Different style of saddles might also make a difference. You could also take the bike in and have the setup checked. Changing your brand of shorts might also make a difference. Indola, Assos, Anatomic and all the other manufacturers use different types of padding, as well as the cut, thickness and position. Trial and error could be expensive, but your wedding tackle might just be worth a bit more. Checking the position of the vegetable could also help. If you a trying to stuff a cucumber into a baby marrow packaging, you might need to upsize the clothing you wear....
  14. There is a reason they say "start the year off with a bang..." The bang they are referring to is the valves of your heart banging through the top of your helmet. Standing at the finish line it was good to see so many people finishing a really tough race. Having inspected the route the day before, I could see that there might be a few that would have to push their bikes in a few places. Hats off to the route developers, Fritz, Tim and all that helped to put on such a good event.
  15. Our Bosal has a locking mechanism to fasten the carrier to the towbar, and a lock on the frame clamp. The bike is held so securely by the frame clamp that the wheels can't be turned or moved. I wonder whether that will meet their spesifications, or whether we will need to get additional cables/locks. As it is, the vehicle is never left unattended when we stop to refuel, visit the lavvy, or get some padkos....
  16. The average times should be about the same as the rest of South Africa (GMT +2) even though Barberton is a small dorpie in the platteland. Other than that, depends on what distance you are riding, and what your fitness levels are like.
  17. We are returning Sunday afternoon late. Will see if any of the people we know are attending will be able to assist.
  18. What happened to the other planned events?

    Bike rack

Our Bosal cost in the region of R3800-00. Definitely cheaper than Thule.

    Bike rack

Have a look at the Bosal bike carrier systems. We have one, and to me it is superior to the Thule, Buzzrack or other systems. It folds up to a compact size, takes up minimal room in the garage, and can be fitted to the car by my wife... (It takes up about the same space as a 20L plastic jerry can.) p://www.bosal.com...04/Default.aspx
  21. PM me your details and I will do a search for your CSA ID.
  22. Where and when will number pickup be?
  23. To me, the crux of the matter is the intolerance of people in this country towards other people in this country. It has nothing to do with race, colour, gender, sexual orientation, vehicular use, political views or any of the other base issues people may have. If you see a taxi, you assume that it is overloaded and breaking the law in some way. (They usually are, but still...) You see a gay person, you want to willfully "fix" their orientation for them. You see an old person behind the wheel of a motor vehicle, you automatically start fuming that they are driving too slowly, too carefully. There is no quick fix to it. People need to have a mindset change. That can only happen when everyone starts paying attention to all the other people around them. Not just by looking for the negative aspects in everyone else, but by trying to see the positive in someone. The old lady driving in the middle lane in her 1968 Toyota Corona might be an irritation to many. How many have stopped to think that her car is older than many hubbers, that it is still in pristine condition, she has never been involved in a traffic violation or accident, and that we will all (hopefully) reach her ripe old age, and hope that we will still be able to drive ourselves around. It is easy to say that we won't be like that, or aren't as irrisponsible as some other road users we have seen. Yet I am certain that there is not one person in this forum that has not violated at least one traffic rule, or "bent the rules" on at least one occasion. We are all guilty of it. Instead of everyone thinking that everyone else is to blame, it might be best to rather start looking at things in a different way. Drive defensively instead of offensively. Drive/ride/walk with the mentality of a small mouse in a cage full of hungry cats. One of the first thoughts that crossed my mind when I read the article of the tandem riders that were killed on the R550 was "Where were they riding when the road is as narrow as it is?" We need to take the log out of our own eye, before looking at the splinter in the eye of our neighbour.
  24. Article HERE It is tragic when a cyclist is killed, but it is even more tragic when cyclists want to practise their sport on our national roads. Go and race on a track! I don't practise with my four wheel drive vehicle on a national road, nor do I practise target shooting in a public area. There are hopelessly too many bicycles on our roads, which makes it logical that one of them will be killed every now and then. That is simply the Law of Averages. If only commuters that use bicycles to get to work and back are allowed on our road - as it should be - there will be less cyclist deaths. You don't need to be a mathematician to work that out. Most cyclists are arrogant, ignore traffic rules, ignore red traffic lights, and ride on roads without an emergency lane. Then they ask why these tragedies occur. Rammetjie Uitnek Pretoria
