  1. The only supplement is a mug of coffee, and either pronutro, or Maltabela porridge cooked on the stofie that goes into the boot together with the other cycling stuff.
  2. Why not get the various CSA districts (GNC, CGC etc.) involved, and have a number of toyruns, then get someone to coordinate and pick up the various toys collected. That way more cyclists can get involved, more toys collected, and more kids receive something.
  3. I like the idea behind the suggestion. The only problem I see is the implimentation of the plan. Who is going to scan the barcodes? Who is going to keep the database up to date? Who is going to imprint the barcodes on existing frames? What about the vast majority of cyclists that are not members of this forum? Who is going to inform them about the implementation? Where is the money going to come from for the implimentation of the scanning? Who is going to supply the equipment to imprint/engrave frames, and the scanning equipment? Who is going to train the people that need to use the scanners? I support a national database of frame serial numbers. I am even willing to run the database, keep it up to date, and run it on a daily basis. The necessary software to make it work will have to be installed on one of my PC's, and someone will have to give me the training on making it work. Getting all existing serial numbers / new serial numbers / amending ownership details will have to come from all LBS's and other interested parties to get the database up and running. They will need to know where to send the details through. A service provider will need to come onboard to help with the bandwidth that such an endeavour will entail. All in all, the ideas are there, but we need to get them implimented. Surely there are cyclists out there that are computer programmers, that can create the necessary programming to ensure that such a database would work. There are bound to be PC shop owners that can supply larger hard drives, routers, modems or whatever is necessary on the hardware side. In the end we all need to stand together. If everyone pitches in any suggestion can be made to work. Just another suggestion.
  4. My personal opinion is that getting Carte Blanche and/or the other media involved is a great idea. Unfortunately they want the whole story, and are not going to be doing any investigating on their own. They want the story, together with the investigation and possible conclusions, before they will air it. Over the past few months that we have been members of this forum, we have read a number of reports regarding people that have been bike jacked. Some of the incidents may have been more violent than others, while some may have been relatively violence free. The bottom line is that the cyclists have gone through a traumatic experience, and each person experiences trauma differently. There have also been a number of suggestions that something should be done. Unfortunately the suggestions remain just that - suggestions. Cyclists MUST get pro-actively involved in safeguarding their own sport. Nobody else is going to do it. Let us start taking the suggestions and turning them into actions.
  5. I received a photo of one of the alleged bike jackers that was caught near the Pinedene station yesterday, and have printed copies and issued them to all my guards. As the person has not been convicted of the alleged crime that he is alleged to have perpetrated, his identity may not be disclosed, and pictures/photo's may not be published. I however feel that by giving a photo of the alleged offender to the guards, they may be able to identify known accomplices (read friends) of the alleged offender, and enable us to identify these alleged accomplices, find out where they live, and act pro-actively to stop the spate of jackings before someone is killed. One of my guards lives at Pinedene, and I have tasked him with trying to identify the alleged bike jackers, and attempt to find out where they live. The guard in my employ has been withdrawn from the site where he previously worked, and is now being redeployed to the route/s that cyclists often take. I would like to challenge every security company to do the same, and post at least 1 security officer on known cycling routes. By having ears/eyes on the ground we may start making a difference. I hope that by using the word alleged I have not offended the rights of the individual, as he is still innocent until proven guilty.
  6. Check for free photos on www.waterpoint.co.za The photos can be downloaded for free. Nice one Deon.
  7. Results are supposed to be available on the USN website, or on waterpoint.co.za
  8. Forescast states that minimum and maximums will be about the same as today. Early morning is always cold, especially next to the dam.
  9. Another option would be the Momsen AL329. They are in your price range, and can also be easily upgraded.
  10. This is funny. My character: Laura Croft. Suggestions: Catherine Zeta Jones Kate Beckinsdale Liz Hurley Questions - Is your character involved with sex? Is your character a porn star? IS your character British? Does your character live in America..... I'm at question 74, and it still hasn't guessed.

  12. You can get the SL929 right now, if the piggy bank is open. My son has one, and it is a beaut. You can easily get the weight down under 10kg. Ours is 9.8kg, and that is with cheap SPD pedals attached.
  13. Glad you came through unharmed.
  14. The field is becoming more and more congested. In the past there would be between 300-400 cyclists entered. The last few months that was the number of pre-entries alone, with the same amount doing line entries. What I also found strange was the amount of mud on the riders at the finsih line, as it has not rained in quite a while. Where is the mud coming from? We are into winter already. As far as the lions go, they will (hopefully) only grab one rider, thinnning out the field somewhat, and allowing the other riders to pass through unharmed. It should also increase the average speeds somewhat.
  15. The lions are supposed to be tame, but will chase anythings that runs (moves fast) to "play with." Do the lions know that they are supposed to be tame?
  16. The 35km was 23km, while the 70km rode only 40km. The 3 km on one lap is the start point to the entrance into the reserve, that gets left out on the second lap. Not a pleasant ride, with everyone bunching up as a result of the much shorter routes. According to the race organizer the bottom camps were not available as the lions that reside in those camps were loose, instead of being in the boma's where they are normally kept.
  17. Endola Enduro bibs all the way.
  18. Pedal like hell to get away from the cold. The faster you go, the hotter it gets.
  19. If they are Specialized shoes, the strappy thing that goes into the clicky thing can be replaced. Spares were available at FPC Irene the last time I was there. Don't know where you are located, but a shop selling Specialized gear should be able to get you replacements.
  20. We have the B7 and M7. B7 has bike mount included, while the M7 has the belt clip included. Both were bought for R495-00 each in Centurion at the hiking shop next to Epic Sport. They are great, giving good battery life, and the flood/spot adjustment is a breeze.
  21. I agree that a few of them needs to be caught. Patrolling on motorbikes, quads or vehicles is not going to be very effective, as they hear the engine, and simply fade away. If a few can be caught they might be persuaded to give information on where the bikes are going, who is buying them, and where they are operating from. eBlockwatch, the local CPF, SAP and cycling clubs should get together to make a concerted effort to get hold of these people. Although I don't cycle myself anymore, I have a vested interest in that my son cycles, and I have to replace anything that is either broken, goes missing, or is stolen. The local SAP station telephone numbers should be programmed into everyones' phone, together with the Cycle Line of eBlockwatch. Wierdabrug SAP 012-6544031 Lyttelton SAP 012-6448600 Olifantsfontein SAP 011-3168020 Midrand SAP 011-3471600 Cycle Line 0822360015
  22. At 03:30 I was as snug as a bug in a rug. NOTHING beats a snuggle when it is cold and wet outside.
  23. The term "forced entry" is not a legal term in the sense that you can be convicted for it. It is simply an indicator of aggression, as it can refer to a door being kicked in, a window being smashed, or fence wires being cut. If nothing is stolen in a housebreaking, the charge would be Housebreaking and Trespassing or Housebreaking with the intent to commit a crime, while if something is stolen the charge is Housebreaking and Theft. I am not extolling the virtues of Outsurance at all, as I am currently obtaining quotes from other insurers, as my premiums have skyrocketed, even though we have been with outsurance for close on 10 years for vehicle and household insurance. Any insurer will have both good and bad publicity. Use tools like "Hello Peter" to determine if you want to join, continue with, or change insurers, buy a car, or change banks....
  24. The definition of housebreaking, as it was drilled into me many years ago as a student constable, was: "The unlawful and intentional removal of an obstruction to gain entry into a premises that is suitable for human occupation, and entering that premises with the intent of committing a criminal offence." The definition does not make mention that the obstruction has to be locked, barricaded, guarded by passive or active devices, or anything of the kind. Even a tent flap that is zipped up is considered an obstruction to a premises that is suitable for human occupation. Rolling up a garage door, opening an unlocked door, or pushing a curtain out of the way to gain entry via a window, is still removing an obstruction to the premises. The definition has not changed, but it seems that the interpretation of it has. We were also with Cyclesure, and changed over to Outsurance when they did not want to pay out for damage to the rear derrailleur, hanger and cassette when the bike met a rock hidden in grass.
  25. Just confirmed with te SAPS that 2 cyclists were involved in an accident with a black Porche Cheyenne. One cyclist was killed, and the other was seriously injured. Our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the family of the cyclist that was killed, and a speedy recovery to the cyclist that was injured.
