  1. Out of interest, there will always be a difference when viewing a .gpx or .gbd file (from a GPS) on Google Earth or Google Maps. The mapsets used by GPS manufacturers take the curvature of the earth into consideration, while Google does not, showing the earth as a map laid flat. The difference could be as little as a few metres, or sometimes a few hundred metres.

  3. Second Saturday in as many weeks. We seriously need to so something about this.
  4. If anyone has lost a Polar Cadence sensor at Groenkloof, they can PM me, as we have picked one up.
  5. The 2011.01 maps are available in store. You can purchase the DVD for R20-00, then purchase the mapset you wish to use online, by following the prompts once you have inserted and run the DVD. Typically, streepmaps will cost you R999-00, while Topo & Rec will be a bit more.
  6. The LED Lenser B7 goes sells for about R500-00. We got ours at a hiking shop. Outdoor Warehouse and Cape Union Mart also normally stock them. The torch comes with a bicycle clamp that is easy to use, fits easily on the handlebar or stem, and it is BRIGHT. It has 2 settings (full power and half) which can be selected by using the pushbutton at the back of the torch. I have been using the torch regularly for the past few weeks, and have not noticed any noticeable drop in performance. It uses 4 AAA batteries, which are included with the torch. There are quite a few reviews of them here on the Hub.
  7. Seems that someone spoke to them in a language that they understand. Good for them.
  8. Once they realize that there is a tracking system installed on a bike, they will simply strip the bike and remove it. Tracking systems would need to be small, easily conceilable, and hard to detect. A bike also does not allow a lot of space to install a tracking system. The battery in a tracking system would also need to be replaced regularly. Only suitable place I can think of would be in the seatpost or handlebars. Even though bikes are expensive, they are not perceived as that by many SAPS officials. "It is just a bicycle" is often the standard answer, until you tell them the value, and then their eyes bug out of their heads, followed by "eish." As a young Police Constable in the early 80's, my Station Commander would emphasise the point of relative prices, by asking us this: "What is worth more to the owner? Philimons' bicycle that he uses daily to commute to work with, and is his only mode of transport, or the insured S500 Merc of Oom Jan the farmer, who still has another car, plus 2 farm bakkies, plus 3 tractors...." My son was one of the first riders to come apon the poor blokes that had been bikejacked this morning. If his group had left 10 minutes earlier, it could easily have been him, or one of his group that got attacked.
  9. 2 Further blokes got bikejacked this morning. They were part of the FPC Irene outride, and were close to the R21/Olifantsfontein offramp when it happened. 4 Muggles jumped out of the long grass, armed with pangas, sharpened metal "sword" (sharpened grass slasher), knobkierie and a hammer. Both riders suffered injuries to their arms, backs, shoulders and heads as a result of this. Fortunately their helmets stayes secured, or they might very well have ended up on their way to the morgue, instead of hospital. The b@stards managed to get a way with a Merida One Twenty dual suspension bike. 2 Different outride groups were on the same route at the same time. FPC Irene and Epic Sport were in close proximity of each other when the attack occured. Hope the 2 cyclists recover fully, and that the f****ng b@stards die a slow and painful death.
  10. Condolences to his family and friends.
  11. That would be like adding oil to a fire. Rather use the information obtained, and lay charges of reckless endangerment, or Reckless and/or Negligent driving against the driver of the vehicle. He already seems to resent the fact that he has to share the road with cyclists. Enflaming his feelings by damaging his vehicle will only aggrivate the situation.
  12. I see a lot of finger pointing at different people and yet nothing constructive coming from it. The facts are that: 1. CSA seem to have requested that JMPD be in attendance, as the JMPD were present in the first part of the day. The JMPD were however not present through the entire day. 2. Vehicles ignored traffic officers and marshalls, some reports of drivers even spitting at/on marshalls and traffic officers. Reports also indicate that vehicles even drove onto pavements to carry on with their business. 3. I only knew about the event from reading about it here on the hub. I listen to Talk Radio 702, and can't remember once hearing an advertising blurb for the event. It was never discussed while I was listening, which is normally from about 8am t 4pm. 4. CSA may have been overly ambitious to attempt to use some of the major roadways of Johannesburg, without giving proper warning in advance to motorists regarding road closures, rolling closures, or the event in itself. I can only hope that the recent events in PE have given the powers-that-be a sufficient warning on what to expect, and what to do to prevent any further unfortunate events occuring again. If the members of CSA are to blame, they should shoulder the repsonsibility and act accordingly. Whether this included their resignations is debatable. If JHMP were at fault for not attending to the entire days' event, they should accept that they are also responsible, and make ammends to ensure that this type of incident does not occur on their watch again. If the motorists of Sandton/Rosebank/Johannesburg in general are to blame, I hope that they realise that they acted like hooligans and have scarred the image that we were trying to convey to the rest of the world that South Africa is a great cycling destination. Let's learn from the mistakes, accidental or otherwise, and move forward, if the world will allow us, and irrepairable has not already been done.
  13. Congratulations to the motorists in Sandton for getting the second stage of the race stopped. The race is supposed to put South Africa on the world cycling map. Some vehicles were even driven over pavements after traffic officers closed off certain roads. Instead of showing the world what a good cycling destination South Africa can be, they showed the world what a dangerous place we live in.
  14. I visited the store earlier today. Outstanding sales personnel, friendly and competent servicing staff. I see a bright future for this store.
  15. You can expect a fast smooth race, with only a few small inclines and rocky section. Winning times on the 35km are in the region of 1h10min.

  17. You will need a SA Mapset if you want to use the Edge 500 with Training Centre or Mapsource on your PC. Mapsets alone cost R999-00 for the first mapset, and the following mapsets in that year are free. They are available from any good store that stocks Garmin products. Alternatively the mapsets can be downloaded at www.garmap.co.za You can also download WebUpdater, which is used to upgrade the firmware of your device free of charge. Before purchasing your mapset, register your Edge on the Garmap site, and you may then qualify for a discount of R650-00, resulting in the mapset costing you R349-00.
  18. Going through the Owners Manual it seems that a tracklog is automatically created, which can then be saved as a .gpx file, which you can view in Mapsource. Even the Garmin Edge 500 creates a tracklog so they technically aren't allowed during the Epic either. The only way that the officials could possibly be satisfied is if the history was deleted after completion of the race. That would erase all the data gathered during the race though, including HR, Speed and Cadence.
  19. I have witnessed petrol attendants pocketing cash after a vehicle had thrown in a set amount, and drove off without asking for a slip. Once a slip is printed the transaction is closed, and the money registers as being in the till. Garages suffer quite heavy losses due to this form of fraud. Their are many ways in which they scam and defraud unwary people. Some pumps are not zeroed when they start filling up your vehicle, resulting in you paying a higher amount than you are supposed to. They swipe your card twice, and pocket the one amount. Also true at toll booths. This is easier done with fleet cards as fleet managers don't always detect a double billing. Taxi operators DO get subidised by the goverment. Ever notice that they never protest higher fuel prices? If the fuel price goes up, the subsidy goes up. They also only use certain filling stations, which are normally located close to taxi ranks.
