  1. They are not cool, but they make a big difference to your comfort over longer distances. I love mine, they are a bit dorky. but who gives a damn. Dont confuse cool with functional / comfortable, a suspension seatpost is comfortable but not cool. On a road bike a triple or compact crankset may be be functional but hell its decidedly uncool
  2. Big H makes me laugh
  3. It looks like the problem has been solved, thanks Racetec!
  4. Hells bloody bells chaps relax, its the Argus for heavens sake. Its full of idoits, heros, incompetents, hackers, bullets, race snakes, grannies and grandpas, kids, unicyclists. You know this when you start, you know that there is a fair chance of being taken out, you know that someone is going to shout at you to hold your line, you know someone is going to take exception to something that YOU do, you will get asked to move aside. Live and let live, enjoy the ride. The Argus is a phenomenon that draws all types you need to just take it easy and try to have some fun. And before you jump to too many conclusions some of us have no option but to cycle home due to road closures, not everyone who is riding along the route at 11 am is doing two laps.
  5. I didn't watch any of the coverage but are people saying that SABC did a better job in previous years?
  6. I am running a 42 16 seems to work pretty well and the Cape Town hills are managable (some barely)
  7. My wife recently had our second kid, my training went to pot and I just couldnt put the training time in to race in VA (where the pace is simply insane at times. I didnt feel like getting put through the wringer and get dropped early on and probably as a result post a slower time so I dropped to B where the pace is more managable.
  8. I started a few groups down from were I was seeded, yesterday my results were correct now they have me about 10 minutes slower and say that I started in the VA group (where I was meant to start). I have sent them an email to ask them to correct it. Anyone else had this problem? Hope it is sorted out by the time the official results are published, otherwise my reputation will be ruined!
  9. Please explain where is the road in relation to the ditch. It just looks like a spot of erosion to me, I think you are stuffed, next time bunny hop rather than slamming on brakes. But call an ambulance chaser as per Helloise's post if you want proper advise, they often work on a no payout no fee basis.
  10. Did another sub three, my third, great to crack one out over Boyes Drive. In the final analysis I think Boyes only costs around 5 mins. Not bad considering that I did 38 training rides starting in Jan, and no real riding since last years Argus.
  11. Genius Dude! lets hope someone is listening
  12. Oh the irony, the Argus was started to promote cycing and in particular bike lines and there are no bike lanes around the GHC. I popped in after a meeting in Town, otherwise I would have taken my bike in, I did count three bikes in the bike park though so there are some like minded folks. You surely jest about the GHC being an interesting architectural concept? It is an introspective monolith with no relation to human scale, the broader urban context, it has poor accessibility, limited configuration and restricted application. It is devoid of architectural flair and eloquence. It turns its back on the City and has no relation to the streetscape. I could go on but this is a cycling forum, but to put it in context, The GHC is Shimano Sora, it hardly works and has no character, now if it were Campy Super Record....
  13. So I went to the expo today. The parking situation is a disaster, the old Good Hope Centre is a dog in need of demolition and is realy not suited to the expo, the expo needs to be moved to the CTICC, ample parking and a great place to showcase the largest timed cycle race in the world.
  14. Dont do it. Our trails are rubbish, our mountains terrible and ugle, our beaches dont hold a candle to Brighton, our wines are like vinegar, The waterfront and Atlantic Seaboard are rundown and decaying. I dont want to comment on the women here(may get into trouble, I could go on with our terrible it is here. You are far better off in the UK, with, um, with, ..... someone help me out here, I was only there for a year.
  15. It will be difficult but not impossible. You will be pretty much riding solo, unless you can find a few other guys of the same ability and ride with them. No, if you substitute someone who is selling their number you start where you are seeded, unless you ride with their number and chip, which is not allowed.
  16. Antibiotics will depress your system for a few days after you finish the course, so expect to feel under par for about a week
  17. Thanks XTC1, how does the AT3 mounting link work? that is my biggest concern, I dont want to break my CRC boycot and buy it, only to find it wont attach to my bike (hardtail Scott MTB)
  18. I am looking to buy a AT3 Childrens 2 Seat Trailer. It looks like this Just for short flattish rides on safe roads (I dont feel like having to put up with a pregnant wife again)
  19. Call Cape Cycle Systems in CT. They should be able to give you a rough costing, my guess is that you would be better off replacing.
  20. Been cycling long? this is just par for the course, it is as much a part of riding in SA as potholes and glass in the roads. There is absolutely nothing that you can do to re-educate the motoring public. If you cant ignore it you should be on your MTB
  21. Call your LBS, they should be able to hook you up if they are so inclined. (try to go for a more service orientated shop rather than one of the big corporate shops)
  22. Boyes adds about one kilometer, and about 2 minutes on the road for anyone riding from elite to G or so. The biggest issue resulting from Boyes, is that you hit it early on with fresh legs and you normally pound it because it is made up of a few sections of short power climbs, but it comes back to bite you on Chappies and Suikerbossie later on where you find that you dont quite have the legs you had on the old course and take a few minutes more over these climbs and the hard fast run in to the finish. If you are a genuine sub 3 rider, its not going to make any difference to you. If however you are one of those guys who will ride a 2:55 - 2:59:59 on a perfect day with no wind and your normal plan is to wheelsuck the whole way - hopeing to hang onto your betters, then the Boyes will bugger you.
  23. The people who ride up in my group know how to ride, no worries there. No one owns the waves bru, we are all one big happy family in the water. Great example of an accessible sport though, pick up on old stick for a couple of hundred bucks and you have free surf.
  24. No, its not stupid, try to understand - everything is relative. I am just making the point that not all events are structured to be accessible to everyone. Thank goodness for this, it keeps the rabble out.
  25. Ag shame, bring me a box of tissues. I cant afford to do the Epic every year, so I dont. I dont whinge about it, I just do the events that I can afford.
