    White sugar

I used this for 2 months which included races with no issues. I would simply add a high5 electrolyte tab for sodium and a drop of lemon juice to manage the sweetness.

Think of us cyclists on the other side of 100kgs

I used to have the same belief and most literature suggests that. My dietician got me to train an race on  60g/h  and I weighed 108kgs at the time. The weight has been going down and performance has iincreased significantly.

what products do you use that don’t cost stupid money?

I buy my nutrition from Cycle lab and Dischem. The mycyclelife loyalty programme and their price match policy make it cheaper to stock on supplies. I buy toiletries from dischem  so I get tons of points that I use towards cycling nutrition.

And if a brake disc bike comes along that's a good deal, would you go for it ?

Yes, I am willing to consider disc brakes bikes as well. I can always upgrade my current rim brake bike later.

  3. I know you cant really police dialogue, especially online. But my intention is to tap into the vast wisdom and insight that exists in the bikehub community. I would appreciate constructive input and if we can please keep the banter to a minimum as it won't really help my cause.

My initial plan was to build a rim brake racing bike. A decent frame, proper carbon wheels and a groupset from Merlin Cycles. But its been a mission finding a suitable new frame locally. So I then expanded my parameters to include new or used disc brake bikes.

In the options detailed below which would be the wise move taking into account the following.

    1. I have a rim brake bike which I also plan to upgrade with a different cheaper used frame and some cheaper carbon wheels.

    2. Ideally I dont want to spend more than R60 000.

    3. I am not really in a rush. But like a 5 year old I have little impulse control and the excitement is killing me.

    4. Weight is a consideration but specs are more important.

    5. I would prefere a new bike or frame I can build up. But if I can QC through a bike shop, I would consider used options.

    6. I need a size L or XL depending on brand. 570-580mm top tube,  >180mm headtube.

Here are the options in no particular order.

These 2 are being sold by a hubber in JHB so I plan to view them soon.

    https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/road-bikes/718408/specialized-tarmac-sl6-carbon-wheelspower-meter

There was also a Scott Addict 30 being sold for 25k by a hubber in Stellenbosch. But I was a bit worried about the overall condition. And now its been listed for 19k because of a crack in the rear wheel.

I open to considering other options. Complete bikes, builds hubbers can suggest (wheels groupset and frame combinations).

    Thank you.

Sounds hectic, excuse my ignorance but how do the categories work?

Hectic in a good kind of way though or I am just a sucker for punishment. I dont actually remember if there was a specific metric for seeding. But a lot of people would self seed. A lot of "racing snakes" would run from the heat in cat one and drop to cat 2.

But one thing about WP racing it wont take you long to know if you are in the wrong cat. For context , I rode 3:33 at the 2022 CTCT and rode cat 3 at WP.

Ps. Make sure you do Veldriff to Veldriff its an epic race thats also part of the league now.

  5. Based on my experience of the WP:

I raced WP league in 2022 and it was definately worth it. Its full gas racing unlike the typical group ride approach at most PPA races.

There was Cat 1, 2, 3 and theres is usually not enough numbers for cat 4. I rode cat 3 and yeah it was k**k hard but it acted as launch pad for me to pursue proper training.  Based on your CTCT time you could probably be solid it Cat 2 but if thats too easy you can always mix it up with the big boys in the next race.

There was about 5-6 races if I remember correctly. Slanghoek, Paarl de Ville, Redhill, Atlantis etc

well done, what group were you in and what's your FTP btw?

Thank you. I was in &. I last checked my FTP in October last year and it was 282w. Im due for another test but doing it is nasty work.

Question to those around the 3hr mark, what sort of NP (w/kg)  for the duration does it require to achieve this?

    I weigh 95kg and did 3h6.

    • Av Power: 224w
    • NP: 268w

From the start to the top of Edinburgh drive I averaged 280w  and 325w NP in order to keep up with the bunch.

  8. I am not a cramp expert, but here is the process of elimination that sorted mine out. It includes most of the issues mentioned already in one bundle.

Its either fitness, hydration, electrolyte loss, nutrition, bike fit.

    • I improved my fitness by riding more often. No fancy stuff just riding consistently and frequently.
    • Then I increased my fluids (water and carb mix) consumption to a 750ml bottle per hour during training rides.
    • I also add a high 5 zero electrolyte tab to my carb mix bottle. So thats one bottle with carb mix and high 5 zero and 1 bottle with just water.
    • I decreased my carbs per hour from 90g (thanks to GCN) to 60g after seeing a dietician. I stopped getting gut cramps and my performance improved because the weight dropped.
    • I also used to get cramps in my quads before I got a bike fit (I was overusing my quads because my saddle was to low).

I can now do really long hilly rides, in hot conditions, relatively fast without cramping.

  9. I actually had the same question. But thought the "wound was still fresh".

Another example of this is coming down Helshoogte pass into Stellenbosch (or Sugarbush into Hout Bay). I believe the speed limit is 60km/h and cyclist normally clock north of 75km/h (me included).

    Hi guys

Has anyone got a size large road bike that they would be willing to rent to me for the period of 8th March - 11 March (collect + return in the morning)?

I am riding the Argus as my first race, and I have just started riding as of the end of last year. I live in Durban and would prefer to not transport my bike as the costs are quite substantial.

I have had a look at all of the bike rental websites and they all seem to be fairly pricey as well, hence the reach out.

Looking forward to hearing back, thanks all.

    Hi Keagan

People are generally reluctant to rent out their bikes to strangers. I would imagine this is due to the many risks that come with such an arrangement. But some companies rent out bikes in Cape Town. So you can look them up but I know one is called Cycling Friends.

Here is how you could get your bike from Durban to Cape Town for R1285.

Cycle Lab can bubble wrap and box your bike for R250 and if you are flying to Cape Town it costs R285 to travel with a bike on FlySafair. For the return, you could get it boxed by Cycle Lab in Cape Town and they can also courier it to your house or a Cycle Lab branch in Durban for R750.

  11. Disclaimer: In no way is this an attempt to support any narrative that suggests fatalities of cyclists are justified. I'm a cyclist and I support staying wider of the rider.

    With that said.

When I moved to JHB I couldn't believe cyclists would just occupy an entire lane on the road and simply park a support vehicle to screen them from traffic. It's also common to see a lone rider, riding along slow AF with a big car moving behind them. Essentially blocking the way for other cyclist and cars who are trying to get on with their day.

Then there is the issue of guys crossing the barrier line on open-road races, which is quite frightening. A guy will cross the white line and try to move up in the bunch. And I will be watching biting my teeth as oncoming cars get closer. You would think this brave soul is risking his life to go and pull a turn in the front. Wrong! He just did all that to only continue sucking wheel the entire race.

Then there is the issue of cars with bike racks that are so aggressive towards cyclists on the road. Some of the worst drivers also live among us, hopefully not on the hub.

  12. I have used a variety of products so my feedback is based on personal preference.

    1. EVOX Lean-Pro Lite: 20g of protein and its  Low carb and its plant protein and it doesn't taste nasty like most plant protein powders. This is diet shake so it bloats the stomach to create that satiated feeling

    2. Biogen Rage Impact Whey: Has about 27g of protein per serving and also has some creatine.

    3. Biogen Complete Whey: 25g of protein. Its a blend of whey and plant protein. Taste is not too nasty as it also has cocoa

    4. Biogen Iso Whey Premium: Recommended by my dietician but I am yet to try it.

After multiple requests on Facebook for the .gpx , I ended up just building my own on Strava. It’s accurate to within about 100 meters (which is just the exact point of the start and finish)Mail me at killkittie@gmail.com and I’ll send it to you.

    Thanks for the reply.

As a detective of note, I managed to find you on Strava and just saved the file from your routes.

To me Gauteng is the wild west, how safe is this route ?

    Capture d'écran 2024-01-09 145129.png

I'm only familiar with that route from Alberton. I believe that the M61 or Vereeniging Road.

I've ridden there alone numerous times with no issues. But perhaps some guys from the East Rand would be more reliable with how you safely get out of Boksburg.

You think it's doable to ride from their store to Meyerton ? I might not feel like doing the ride after 140km though, but then like you say I could still uber with the bike at the back, drop it off at cyclelab..

It's like +- 60km from Mayerton and I know damn well I wouldn't want to do that ride after 140km of racing. All the best man👍.

Except uberXL is 300 bucks from home to CPT, but R2000 from OR Tambo to Meyerton... so more expensive than the flight.. no thanks

Depending on the timelines of your trip also consider boxing and shipping if Uber will potentially set you back R2000. You could box and ship via Cycle Lab for R750 to their Boksburg branch. I think they normally take 3 days to move a bike between JHB and Cape Town.

Another option could be boxing and flying with it, then unbox it it as soon as you land. That way it can fit in the boot of a normal sized Uber.

Heck I could even offer to pick you up from the Airport and only expect you to cover fuel at a fraction of that 2k cost for Uber.
