  1. And the winner is.... OscarS Thanks for taking part and most especially, thanks to Ewald and the riding team for producing this stoke-inducing series. Much more of it to come in 2016...
  2. It's that time again when we look back at the year that was. The year in review takes a look at some numbers and standout performances (from users and content) for the year. Click here to view the article
  3. Have you voted in the Poll? Entries close at 12pm today. Choose your 'Best of' for Trail Daze 2015 and you could win one a Camelbak Mule 3L (worth R1,590) and a signed enlargement of your favourite Trail Daze photo.
  4. You're just one question away from winning a Garmin Varia bike radar. Complete the form below, correctly answering the competition question, to be entered into the draw. Click here to view the article
  5. The simplicity of a one-by chain ring setup has always appealed to me. Less cockpit clutter, no chain suck and, for the weight-weenie in me, some grams lost. When the Kitted Wonder Ring arrived for testing I decided to take the plunge and convert my own steed to 1x10. Click here to view the article
  6. We attended the BG Fit conference last week and I've got to say we were impressed. To be honest we weren't quite sure what to expect heading in. I for one, though, was taken aback by the level of scientific testing and R&D that has gone into seemingly unsexy items like saddles, shoes and gloves. Aside from the Bike Fitment process the attention to detail in the development of their shoes & saddles in particular was phenomenal. I'll unashamedly say I'm a bit of a convert now. I'm not rushing out to buy a bike with a big S on it and that wasn't the point of the conference, but when it comes to items like saddles and shoes it got me thinking a lot more about how much these two areas can impact your quality of ride. Not to mention the overall fit. These days the tech behind bikes themselves across most of the leading brands seems to be reaching a certain level of maturity and commoditisation. We're not quite there yet, but among the mid to upper end ranges of leading brands there are far fewer "bad bikes". What's next? I'd hazard a guess it's optimisation of the human-bike interface... Andy Pruitt was fascinating to listen to. If you have a spare 15 minutes in your day take a listen to these for a bit of general bike fit history and his background in the development of the BG shoes.
  7. Syntace is a name that I first recognised from my triathlon days as the makers of tri bars and other high-end products. Perhaps a little ahead of their time, the German company introduced their W-Series range of lightweight, super wide aluminium mountain bike wheels “way” back in 2012. Click here to view the article
  8. Hey guys, we also thought the price tag on the Trek was a little on the steep side, but one thing to keep in mind is that this is essentially a Project One (custom spec) bike which does inflate the price a bit vs. off the shelf spec. The guys at Trek SA put it together so they could bring a few to test out while they wait for the standard spec to become available. We'll get details on that pricing asap for a fairer comparison to other similarly specced off-the-shelf 2016 bikes.
  9. R 46,900.00 Full specs here: http://bhsouthafrica.co.za/index.php/portfolio-item/easy-motion-evo-jumper-dual-suss-mtb-29er/
  10. I'm a sceptic when it comes to the actual effectiveness of the Turbine, but looking at the top end of the sport if it gives even a 1% improvement it could be worth it. Marginal gains and all. For us "average" Hubbers though, I'm not sure the marginal gains are quite enough to offset the mockery or inability to blow your nose. The guys down over at CyclingTips delved into this one a bit. A long, but interesting read (though at this stage no conclusive, independent studies available): http://cyclingtips.com.au/2014/08/the-turbine-backed-by-science-or-a-simple-placebo/
  11. I run 2.25's on my VIPA XT (same rear end) with no major issues. In some seriously clogged up muddy conditions I have had a bit of scuffing on the frame from debris on the tyre, but nothing I'm overly worried about. I've recently tested out the same tyres on some wider rims (28mm internal) with no issues, but clearance is tight. Anything wider tyre wise could be a problem, but it's unlikely you'd want to run a much wider tyre on what is essentially an XC / Marathon bike.
  12. We'll query this with them. According to their website the 2016 Vipa AC does have the second bottle cage mount and the photos there confirm it.
  13. We’ve had a Momsen VIPA AC in the office for a little while now. Since my own carbon VIPA XT has been sitting in pieces pending a rebuild it was a perfect time to put in some testing. Click here to view the article
  14. I think you've both misunderstood what The Doctor has posted. He's saying that according to the rules the needle is not allowed whether in or out of competition. On that basis the CSA ruling would be incorrect.
  15. Last week we revealed the results of the 2015 Best Bike in Africa competition held at the Standard Bank Africa Cycle Fair. For the second year running PYGA Industries took top honours with the recently launched Pyga Stage. Click here to view the article
  16. Hi Hubbers, We've just updated the competition dates slightly at the request of the USN & Absa Cape Epic teams, article updated as follows: Competition dates: Thursday 15 October 2015 to Saturday 20 December 2015. Only images shared during these dates will be eligible for entries. Winners of the ABSA Cape Epic team entries to be announced on 24 December 2015.
  17. The common complaint I hear from anyone new to heart rate monitors is the discomfort of the chest strap. Although I have found that with time and moving to higher-end devices the chest straps have become more comfortable, they are still a bit of a pain. The Mio Velo is a wrist-based heart rate band which uses an optical sensor to read your heart rate and packs in some handy Bluetooth-ANT+ features to boot. Click here to view the article
  18. The guys at Darkhorse tell me they already have a wider option in the pipeline. Arriving later in 2016.
  19. Internal width is 22m, and the price quoted in the review is the standard retail price. They're currently on special.
  20. To echo Myles for me (and many who go carbon) it was all about the stiffness. The weight advantage over a decent set of xc/marathon alu rims isn't massive, but the difference in stiffness is the biggest gain.
  21. I prefer to run heavier, thicker tyres generally on any rim choice. If I were an XC race snake I'd certainly look at something lighter, but considering I have been running the same tyre on my everyday Crests it was a far better way to compare the feel without the influence of a difference tyre choice.
  22. If you’re anything like me the idea of riding carbon mountain bike wheels is an unsettled one. Carbon is, well, carbon. It just seems cooler, faster and better. It’s alluring. On the other hand the I worry that it won't be as sturdy or reliable. Not to mention the cost of a decent set of carbon wheels is usually pretty prohibitive to begin with.
