  1. Don't know if it's been asked before? I want to upgrade my road groupset to 11 speed from 10 speed. I want to keep my 10 speed crankset if possible. Does anyone know if a 11 speed chain works fine on a 10 speed chainring? thx
  2. Don't know if it's been posted on this tread before, but thought I'll post it as I've wondered often about strength of the different steels.. What is stronger – Air-hardened steel or CrMo steel? In terms of overall tensile strength, here is the order from strongest to weakest of common bike tubing steels: 1. Heat-treated air hardened steel (micro-alloy) (Reynolds 853, Columbus Foco, TrueTemper OXPlatinum)* 2. Heat-treated CrMo(Tange Prestige HT, TrueTemper Verus HT, Reynolds 725) and Niobium Micro-Alloy steel (Columbus Life) 3. Cold-drawn air hardened steel (Reynolds 631)* 4. Cold-drawn 4130 CrMo(Reynolds 525, TrueTemper Verus, Tange Prestige/Infinity) 5. High tensile steel(cheap dept. store bikes, cheaper bike shop bikes) * Air-hardened steels actually gain strength in the weld area after welding, but not along the whole tube. ref: https://www.somafab.com/faqs
  3. 1984 Kawasaki gpz 750 turbo ... got her 2nd hand, ..... bought her from a friend that made me promise I would sell it back to him once I could afford a car in my varsity days ... he got her back about 3 years later, and his brother wrote her off about a month after that. I loved that bike.
  4. Does anyone know the rules around swimming in the sea after 1 May when lockdown relaxes? If not will gyms be open for swimming, alternatively something like Silvermine dam, will the "parks" open? I need a good long openwater swim
  5. oh yes, .... much more power than most of us could ever wish to properly utilize. I have a 2000 Honda Blackbird - these old bikes are just soooo smooth - albeit a little heavy to maneuver out the garage
  6. Does anyone know where I can buy (strong) magnets from in Cape town Want to do something similar to this .... to add more resistance while on the rollers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyaq5XnumZ0
  7. mmmm ... in the beginning I came off frequently... but at that stage i had a straight profile drum roller, got the Galaxia only much later. But yes, you don't move forward when you fall, the trick would be to get yourself un-clipped before falling onto the rollers ... it almost always hurts
  8. I use these on my Galaxia .... Racermate Inc 1976 Wind Trainer It's awesome, as I get a decent workout with some resistance while still enjoying the natural movement of the bike. I've had the rollers for a while so standing up and sprinting is part of the workout now too. Got the Racermate off ebay in May last year https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2011/03/going-old-school-using-bike-trainer.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDaFS_uL8UQ Only need a powertap or powermeter now .. I use a speed and cadence sensor now with Zwift
  9. .. looking at fixing her up with 10 spd Campagnolo components for weekend rides again .... the mech on the shifters had been suspect for a while. Also have a set of Scirocco's in waiting.
  10. The other awesome advantage about gravel bike riding is the tremendous strength training towards road racing. My commuter is a heavier gravel bike “2012 Ridgeback Flight 3” with drop (road) bars, and 40c's rubber. The extra continuous average wattage that I need is excellent for building endurance, while keeping with the geometry of your race road bike. When I get on my road bike it feels like a feather compared to the commuter. I believe Wout van Aert’s success is built on this
  11. A couple of weeks ago there was a carbon Cannondale SuperX in the Bikehub classifieds .... I thought that is the perfect bike as I could swop out the gravel wheels for road wheels whenever I wanted to do a road race. .... was a bargain at 20K ... but the current recession stopped me from flirting with the idea.
  12. Cygolite Hotshot 2W I have one that's been running awesomely for 3 years now ... bright as hell - 23 000 lux So ordered another 2 last week, one for the MTB and one for the missus, got the package this morning
  13. My advice would be not to load any initial relationship/date/friendship. Don’t see any newly acquainted person as a potential partner. Also, don’t try and find a partner outside your interests, rather find what you really enjoy, whether it’s hiking, cycling, triathlon, throw yourself at these activities, join the clubs and groups, and you’ll meet like-minded people while doing these …. And that’s probably your best bet for finding a compatible partner. It worked for me. Also, don’t date while you still harbour negative thoughts towards your ex … or exes It taints stuff.
  14. Agree, I love my Altra's too, but the sole on the Superior wore down very quickly. Since the majority of my running is on the road, the sole wore down even faster. Purchased a brand new pair of Altra Escalante's, absolutely love them. Did the Peninsula marathon in them. My feet not nearly as tired in the Escalante as compared to the Superior. Escalante's sole is much harder, and the new 2.0 has a much better heel-cup than the previous Escalante (in my opinion). Love them. Want to purchase a second pair before they change the model.
  15. Eish, sorry to hear, but very well done for finishing. My partner and I also did the Peninsula yesterday, trying to qualify for the Comrades. Was my first marathon too. I just-just managed to get there in time for Comrades qualifying, needed 4:50, made it in 4:47. From Fish hoek to Simonstown was brutal. Sadly my partner didn't qualify, we are also doing the West Coast marathon to get her there.
  16. https://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/road-bike-reviews/compare/continental-grand-prix-5000-tl-2018-vs-pirelli-cinturato-velo-2018 The Pirelli's taking a beating on rolling resistance ..
  17. I'm also looking at trying the GP5000TLs, .... interesting that both Egan Bernal and Ivan Sosa from Ineos fell in the Colombian National Championships in Tunja on Sunday, and Team Ineos is sponsored by Continental? Both were front wheel slipping ... wonder if it had anything to do with the tyres they were running?
  18. I never have breakfast. I have only a cup of black coffee before I commute (cycle) to the office. On some days I cycle back home without having had anything the entire day. I do intermittent fasting. On fasting days I'll do the ride home a bit more relaxed else I bomb around 20km of the 38km commute.
  19. While on the topic of Peugeot. I have a Peugeot Prestige Mirage from 86' which I want to fix up for the next "Hillclimb". Was my first race bike . I damaged the fork in a house-move and after much searching decided on ordering a fork from Soma. The steerer on the fork is a bit too long though. Does anyone know which bikeshop in the Southern suburbs will be able to thread the steerer a bit further down (and then cut the excess)? It's a 1" inch dia. steerer.
  20. interesting article on transition from cycling to running ito injuries: https://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/business-day/20200126/282050509036403 reference: (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/329965611_Bone_health_in_elite_Norwegian_endurance_cyclists_and_runners_A_cross-sectional_study)
  21. This is amazing ... I read up last night there is even a US patent out for a design like this ... Although it will be picked up by an X-ray, will it be picked up by a thermo or electromagnetic scanner?
  22. Ag no .. did this thread just end again? For a moment there I was so happy someone started this again …. Had a mechanical doping question. Was thinking about the storing of elastic potential energy together with advances in material science. Some kind of torque blade/spring winding up while you pedal/brake downhill or in the peloton and releasing when you need it to open a gap at a strategic opportunity – no battery needed either. And it won’t be picked up by an electromagnetic scanner either. Is it possible that the pro's could be using / or have used devices like this?
  23. Similarly to Allen Carr's book - "The easy way to stop smoking" the book "Total Immersion" by Terry Laughlin (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/936958.Total_Immersion) had changed things for me dramatically. Swimming had become a meditation instead of a chore, and I love it now. I can go much further and with much less anxiety (if any). If you are an adult beginner to long distance swimming, and you struggle, I would recommend you having a look at this book. It changed my world of swimming. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/936958.Total_Immersion
  24. I've done it on the gas-stove a few times and was uneventful until as above I dropped the chain and splashed the liquid over the side. But agree, the risks is rather large that it could ignite - although not as flammable as 93/95 octane.
  25. I've asked the exact question before on another thread here before. In the meantime I experienced the full "Darwin awards" effect when I dropped the chain whilst taking it out the pot on the gas-stove. Pot caught alight - big scare - big flames - but just dropping the lid back on the pot and all good again. Just keep the lid handy - and try not to splash. Maybe better yet. Turn the stove off when dropping and retrieving the chain from the wax.
