  1. I think the job losses the past year has just exacerbated the current situation. Whether you can only get R500 or R50 for a bicycle/part makes no difference …. SA, and Cape town has struggled with crime for decades, it is not going to go away soon. I’m sure drugs (being under the influence) was involved in Brandon’s attack, as it seemed pretty brazen to attempt a hijacking with so many witnesses? As for how we can continue to enjoy our daily cycle, or what the authorities can do to control the crime stats is the million-dollar question? Cape town is on parr with the world’s worst cities. And it has slowly but surely spilt over from the town-ships where it was mostly limited to before ………. into the streets now … ref: https://businesstech.co.za/news/lifestyle/407087/cape-town-now-ranks-as-the-8th-most-violent-city-in-the-world/# Hope you heal up soon Brandon

    Tinnitus

I've also had it since I can remember, ... at school my parents had taken me for some dental work even, as a doctor suggested that the pressure in my gums/teeth were causing the tinnitus. Nothing worked ... other side of 50 now ... and just live with it. Sometimes I see news that there might be hope ... a cure ... but I've seen nothing promising.
  3. “Supercazzola” – what the Italians is calling it. “Adam Hansen has explained the position of some of the riders at the Giro via Twitter, revealing that they asked for the stage to be shortened last night but that was refused. With heavy rain falling at the start, some riders were reluctant to race, sparking the reduction in the stage distance. It seems that some teams and riders wanted to race but the majority won out and the stage was reduced, with the convoy to the new start cutting out 133km“ Thus, firstly, not all agreed but had to toe the line. Secondly, a large portion of the riders stood around without masks, but used “Covid” as the excuse not to ride …. It is what it is though … what’s done is done. … they (CPA) might have won the battle, but they’ve lost the war (people)
  4. In a world full of perception, fake sport, cancel culture, etc. … the big cycling tours have always been the last “Bastion” to me. Where the guys ride until they pass out. When stages get shortened beforehand, (not during the race because of golfball sized hail) …. I am somewhat disappointed ….. if it is the reason?
  5. Glad I don’t have space to play with these anymore …. Last classic I owned was a 1958 LHD Karmann Ghia. Think many can agree, having a bicycle hobby is small-change in comparison to trying to keep these classic cars on the road …..
  6. yes, maybe more 70's going by the gap/space between the back-wheel and the seat-tube?

  8. Eish, ja, ‘n tad breeze … yes, sorry, you are right, it’s 2020, not 2019 I had hoped that 2019 would have been my best time yet, had an awesome seeding, but lost the group behind a crash up Smitswinkel and then broke my legs trying to catch up. Unfortunately, I also elected to do a 2nd loop that year (2019), …. It was an extremely long day on the road …
  9. How many people take part in the Argus / CTCT each year? 2019 2020= 22642 finished From this, how many achieve a sub 3 hour race ? (2019 2020) sub 3 = 1090 Total distance ? 109km From elsewhere: +- 1200m elevation gain (edit: corrected date)
  10. Lots of issues with getting stuff from Germany .... problem arises when it hits SA and trying to micro-manage it through customs etc. It sometimes disappear off the system for weeks. DHL-de is contracted by the German government to perform postal service in Germany. Once it leaves Germany it's handed over to SA's local SAPO/EMS service. Sadly the German online cycle shops like Starbike and Bike24 don't have the option to select "DHL Express". The DHL German bike-shops refer too for selection is their local postal service. Thus I started using "Aramex Global Shopper" now when ordering from Germany. (Edit: Hardly any issues when I was able to select a proper shipping agent at purchase though)
  11. yes, one of the reasons I love Connex too, as their chain-connector-links are stated as reusable, thus for cleaning and re-waxing the chain it's perfect. As for SRAM, it's not always the case (one time use only on some links) ref: https://www.roadbikerider.com/q-a-can-a-sram-powerlock-chain-link-be-reused/
  12. Takealot had a few Connex sets available a while ago ... I bought 3 sets just to have some future stock
  13. Maybe the break from racing gave them some time to improve technique too. With constant racing it’s difficult to spend time to hone a new skill, if you need to maintain fitness? When I transitioned to zero drop it took quite a while before I could up my km’s again …. In the world of marginal gains, and top athletes changing techniques, the break from racing could possibly have given them this rare opportunity?
  14. Yes, I love the way he 'disses' Cervelo .... his videos is very informative though.
  15. I had an annoying tick which I eventually traced to my seatpost too ... Hope you find yours ...
  16. reminds of the Lotus Hope track bike design?

    Who remembers?

We spent many a day in the ‘kleilat gat’ but I remember one incident pretty clearly when one of our friends got hit above the eye with a piece that had a stone in it. Blood all over the place, ... we ran home (about 2km) with him leaving a trail of the red stuff as far as we went. By the time we got to his house he looked liked someone from a Zombie movie. Face and shirt soaked in blood!! We just rang the front-door bell, and then ‘maak-ed spore” … his mom was a large dutch woman, even when friendly she sounded scary …. Those were the days

  21. I need some advice on crankset options on a 2 x 11 road bike setup. A steel Cervelo Prodigy (disc) frame with an English threaded 68mm BB shell. The rest of the components is Ultegra R8000 11spd disc. I am using a Chorus 175mm 53/39 on my current bike, I’ve always used either 175 or 172.5mm lengths and not a fan of compact cranks. First choice was a FC-R8000 crankset, but besides being hard to come by in above spec, they are a bit pricey locally too? 2nd choice a Shimano 105 FC-R7000 11spd crankset. Seems as if it’s just-about impossible to find a 11spd Shimano 175mm 53/39 in SA though. Additionally, it’s quite a bit cheaper to order from Europe but then I’m stuck ito breakage and warranties as I’ve found quite a bit of articles on failure of the 11spd Shimano road cranks? What other brands can I look at? (and I hate square taper) - or should I just stay with my trusted Campagnolo crankset Budget would be around 4K max - and 2nd hand is also an option. ref: https://www.bikeradar.com/features/shimano-crank-failure/ (the comments below the article highlights more failures)
  22. Anyone know whether we still need to park outside the gate at Silvermine Dam on top of Ou Kaapse weg, or are we allowed to drive into the reserve to the parking-lot now if we want to swim a few laps?
  23. Would love too ... but I would struggle with a 21km trail run now ... earlier the year when i completed the Peninsula marathon to qualify for the Comrades my fitness was much better .... But once my fitness is up again I'll definitely look at some ultra races again. I ran into Philip Boardman while on a morning jog in Kleinmond - he has been my motivation/hero since. He is 60+, but closer to 70 ... not sure ..... but what a legend! https://www.push2extreme.com/single-post/2014/05/10/Marathon-des-Sables-2014-a-journey-by-Philip-Boardman-runner-340 For now my next goal is to complete a full Ironman, and the Comrades 2021
  24. I've been obsessed with ultra running including "The Barkley Marathons" ( ) for 4 or 5 years now. Anything that pushes the human limits .... love this stuff !!! .. think I've watched every single video on the Barkley ... ... and anything else that includes the "ultra" in the title .....
