  1. Nothing wrong with that (aside from looks, as you've pointed out).
  2. I think there's a limit of about R500 for gifts. Above that you have to pay VAT and duties on the full value. Of course, it's possible they won't check the parcel.
  3. Team Sky's Pinarello Dogma last year weighed close to 8kg: http://www.cyclingnews.com/features/photos/pro-bike-ben-swifts-pinarello-dogma-60-1/101477
  4. Scott is also missing this year, as well as Felt.
  5. What tariff code did they charge you under (it will be on the customs docs)? The latest tariff list still says they should be duty free (only VAT charged). http://www.sars.gov.za/Tools/Documents/DocumentDownload.asp?FileID=70078 It will be useful to know what they now charge sunglasses as.
  6. Don't use this if there's any chance that you will be drug tested. It contains pseudoephedrine which is on the banned substance list.
  7. Some of them might be what Shimano calls non-series components: http://cycle.shimano-eu.com/publish/content/global_cycle/en/nl/index/products/mountain/non-series_components.html
  8. The "When I was a lad, I studied full time, 24 hrs a day, worked two jobs, ran a part time business and still managed to race every day"-type comments remind me of this: http://youtu.be/Xe1a1wHxTyo
  9. Generally the poor ones outnumber the rich ones. What about ones with no job, but rich parents? This begins to sound like a BEE debate. You could ask for proof of registration as a full time student at a recognised institution. Make it a once-off thing that you need to do each year and they then keep it in their database for the year. It could be tied to the CSA database that keeps all your licence details etc. Maybe have a CSA licence for students - you only need to show student status when applying for that.
  10. Different companies. The Enve wheels are built by an American company, formerly called Edge Composites. Edge Design is based in Taiwan.
  11. The number of podiums he's achieved is completely irrelevant to whether or not what he says is valid. That is a completely misleading, purely ad-hominem, argument. A quick search through Pubmed shows he is probably wrong (certainly for claiming there is no evidence): there is some evidence that strength training may help endurance cycling, though it is mixed. This review of all research up to 2009 says the evidence is not strong, but the may be a benefit for sprints and time trial performance. http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/20072042 Joe Friel also says this evidence is mixed, but there may be some benefit to weight training: http://www.trainingb...-endurance.html Andy Coggan, on the other hand, feels the evidence for weight training is seriously lacking and you'd be better doing specific strength training on the bike http://forum.slowtwi...i?post=1514619; Finally, Shane Perkins is a track cyclist . Not a good example of the kind of cycling most of us do.
  12. It's gotten worse. It's now something like 20%. On the other hand, if you buy it in store from somewhere like Evans Cycles you could fill out a VAT 407 form and get your UK VAT refunded when you leave the country. You could bring it VAT free into SA as part of your R3000 (R2000?) allowance. You may also be able to claim the VAT if you order it online and get it delivered to one of their stores - you'd need to check with them. http://www.evanscycles.com/help/vat-duty
  13. Are you still looking for people? Edit: Never mind, I think I've found what I was looking for.
  14. There is a school of thought that says the most accurate information you can get is when you include stops. After all, the stops do occur during your ride and do affect the amount of effort you do, so they should be recorded. It is also much easier to delete data that you don't need (using software) than to recreate data that isn't there (because of autopause).
  15. Only the ones like me who have actually RICAed
  16. Is equal to total distance / total time. It will drop since the time will be increasing, but the distance won't (unless you manually pause). Edit: some training software (like Sport Tracks, I think) allows you to only display stats based on moving time, thus ignoring any stops.
  17. How so? I was using the bike mount, though.
  18. I used to use a S725 (almost the same as the S725X). I don't think it had an autopause feature, so stops are counted towards total time unless you manually pause (and remember to restart). The cadence and speed sensors are quite sensitive to mounting position on some frames. I stopped using the S725 because I couldn't get it to pick up the speed sensor mounted on the chainstay (to use with an IDT) and the cadence sensor on the seatstay when I moved to a carbon bike. The exact same positions worked perfectly on my previous bike. There is a way to extend the range of the sensors (at the expense of battery life), but this didn't help for me. If you mount the speed sensor on the front fork and fiddle with the orientation of the cadence sensor (or stick it on the downtube), you shouldn't have any problems.
  19. The OP's initial post doesn't necessarily point towards a scam. A little Googling for "082 077 6097" turns up this, though: http://webcache.goog...ww.google.co.za Very suspicious. Seems 'Wayne' might also be called Roger.
  20. If you're worried about it, see a doctor. If just for your own piece of mind. The 220-Age formula is massively innaccurate. https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/104525-heart-rate-and-the-science-or-lack-theiroff/page__view__findpost__p__1424966 https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/104525-heart-rate-and-the-science-or-lack-theiroff/page__view__findpost__p__1424734
  21. But the local guys will warranty it for a small fee (around R400 if memory serves). The bigger cost issue is usually which maps get included.
  22. It's not illegal for cyclists to ride in the yellow line. That section of the law only says it is illegal for motor vehicles to drive there. We (certain allegations levelled at Fabian Cancellara aside) lack motors. Motor vehicles are also allowed in the yellow line under certain conditions to allow other vehicles to overtake.
  23. With regards to the dibs thing: I'll send a PM asking if they're considering a serious offer. If I get no reply, I ignore it. Otherwise if someone has expressed interest and asked to hold it, but not made a firm offer and I get another definite offer, I send them a PM giving them a specific deadline to make a firm offer (usually the next day). No firm offer after that time and it goes to the person who did make the firm offer. Clear communication and definite deadlines help a lot. I usually end up selling to the first person who PMs me a firm offer that meets my asking price. Just because someone is the first person to respond on the listing, doesn't mean they were the first to send an offer.
  24. There is a Garmin Device plugin that is installed along with ST3.0 which might work. I think it was a separate plugin for ST2.1.
  25. In relation to this one, the most important night is two nights before the race. Try and get in a good night's sleep then. That way, if you get nervous and can't sleep properly the night before the race it doesn't matter too much.
