  1. https://bikeyoke.com/en/yoke-cb01/cb01 BikeYoke makes yokes for the Camber that allows you to fit a non Specialized rear shock. They list all the details you would need. Ive made my own yoke to achieve the same result on a Stumpjumper. I have 2 Specialized rear shocks and yokes but since you in Australia it doesnt help you much
  2. I know here in Gauteng the courses are signed off by CSA commissaire, but saying that Im not always sure the necessary safety measures are in place. How many padding off course is enough/sufficient? Hell even last year at Crans Montana XC World Cup there was virtually no padding the hectic rock drop. One of the rides crashed during race and broke his jaw. The world cup DH riders has also complained about tree stumps etc off course. The wooden bridge in the picture above should be covered with some non-slip wire or paint, otherwise it will be treacherous when wet or muddy. Best would be to take specific concerns up with the race organisers.
  3. I use this https://www.firstascent.co.za/flint-25l-backpack?srsltid=AfmBOoqWLzA0whOa6-89tBfdcuvxj3s0vjNc7Y_4LvhFJpSd9UMyknHw It has a rain cover which works very well. Chest and waist straps are important to keep pack secure, also prevents someone from grabbing it off your back. It has a frame that keeps the back pack away from your back to improve air flow and reduce sweating. It does restrict internal volume though. Enough space for clothes set and lunch (no shoes or laptop) I ride a full suspension so kinda forced to go the back pack route. If on hardtail I would have explored the bike pack route for sure. But having the pack on my back instead of the bike allows for easier manoeuvring of bike on side walks etc, like bunny hopping curbs etc.
  4. Thats pretty much only the entry portal. There is a committee that does all organization, in conjunction with the schools. @jokerman I can add you to the whatsapp group for Gauteng if you are interested. Does the school in which your kids are participate on the school series? Also keep in mind: The XCO/XCC races have much lower entry numbers vs the school series. Roughly 20 in XCO vs >100 in school.
  5. Dates for MTB Series 2025 - save the dates v7.pdf
  6. Oh and there is short course racing in 2025 as well at the provincial races
  7. XCO races for nippers (grade 2-4) are 2 x laps of around 2.5km per lap. Mostly singletrack with a couple of technical bits. School series sub-nippers (grade 1-2), nippers (3-4) sprogs (5-6) ride longer laps. Races total distance between 6 (sub nippers) 8km (nippers) and 10 km (sprogs) Times typically less than 30min
  8. They can participate in the XCO races as well. Youre welcome to message me privately for more info. My daughters (8 & 10) are riding both XCO and school races.

  10. I would opt for the Epic Evo. No brains front or rear, and quite slack HTA of 66.5. 120mm front and 110mm rear. No lock outs, good availability of spares, space for 2 bottles + swat box. Decent no of options available 2nd hand, from R47k upwards.
  11. I've been riding an Orbea Rise for over 2 years (13 000km) and can definitely recommend the brand. Support is pretty good in SA, with lifetime warranty.
  12. Hi Marc What is the typical life expectancy of rear hub bearings? (yeah, how long is piece of string....) Ive just had bearing failure on a OEM branded 370 hub after 1yr and about 200km (bike was used very little for very mellow riding). Bike shop from where I bought the bike just says sorry, this is normal wear and tear. I beg to disagree. The bearings on my own bike's 350 rear hub has over 14 000km and still going strong.
  13. Can definitely recommend Summer Place.
  14. Shimano all the way. You can normally get them for cheap. used them for my kids. But you can actually use pretty much any hydr disc brake. Just set the lewer as close as possible to the bar.
  15. Its actually Porte wheels https://www.rideporte.com/
  16. Depends very much where you handlebars are in relationship to your saddle. I used to ride my handlebars quite a bit lower than saddle, even on Enduro bike, but has steadily increased height over the past few years, to the point where Im running 30mm riser bars and want the handlebars as high as possible. The low handlebars only help on long flat roads, so unless you do that often, just go as high as possible. Also try a cheap high rise bar first and test it before committing to a expensive bar. You can get very cost effective bars from Rapide.
  17. Don forget tire tread pattern. Rear tire tread pattern makes a bigger difference than weight. Therefor I wish for a strong (read heavy) tire casing but with less aggressive knobs
  18. Can you watch races on Eurosport and Disc+ on demand, or can you only watch live? ie can you start watching anytime during live feed and start watching from the start like on GCN+ and RedbullTV? Some of the " alternative" options Ive tried now you can only watch Eurosport, but only live, like DSTV
  19. I suggest rather stay away. Looks super dodge, check reviews on Hellopeter
  20. Both my daughters were on Stans Crest Mk3 32 hole wheelsets, one had Hope hubs and the other with Shimano SLX hubs. Used light as possible spokes. Ended up way more expensive than I planned for but were worthwhile. And were very light. Reason for 32 holes was it was all that was in stock in 24" 24 hole hubs and rims are very scarce. Sold both wheelsets recently on the hub. I still have a set of 24" Maxxis 2.2 tires for sale though. As tires are another headache. I imported Schwalbe's, but again painfully expensive. Best bet for fork is old Fox 26" dropped down to 70-80mm travel with simple internal plastic spacers. Nothing comes close to it. Youre welcome to PM me for more details on the wheels.
  21. Shimano 10 spd for the win: You can easily get new Deore 10spd casette (11-42 or 46) and derailleur. This trick is to find a good old 10spd XTR shifter to pair it with. In run it on my normal bike and ebike. The difference in smooth shifting between SRAM Eagle and Shimano Deore very noticeable on ebike.....
  22. Dirk have you checked out the XCO provincial races? More technical, but much smaller field.
  23. My daughters aged 8 and 10 also did their first school race this past weekend in Gauteng. They were unseeded, so we tried to have them just behind the seeded riders and positioned at the outside and also outside of the first corner. The youngest still had someone stopping in front of her on the start, but at least no crashing. The older one had a good start on the outside. They now have good seedings for the next race. They need to learn to manage traffic during the rest of the race when catching slower riders. (and very few will make space for a faster rider coming through) It seems your on the right track, just keep at it, don't let him despair after one crash, or poor race. Important for the parents to not have high expectations or pressure on them. PS oldest also on a Rhyme 😉
  24. My kids (7 and 9) have these cranks on their bikes in 140mm https://prevelo.com/products/heir-direct-mount-crank?variant=32105296167014 uses standard Shimano BB and has SRAM direct mnt interface so they can run 28t chainrings.
