Hi everyone. My name is Noel Pratten, from Silver Wolf PI.

We are professional private investigators. We have been keeping an eye on the whole situation with the attacks on cyclists, the thefts of bicycles and the cycle hijackings in the Boland and Helderberg areas for some time, as we have developed a plan that we believe will work as far as stopping or reducing these incidents concerned. If everyone or a number of people on this group is/are willing to contribute to fees and expenses we will be able to carry out the plan. Give me a call on 0847625913 if you would like to look at the possibility as a group. We are also always happy to act for individual clients to.

Happy to contribute within a broader group - also think a lot of other cyclists will be.

    Some thoughts:

    - Some of the funding can be self funded. You ask for a donation for every bike that you recover.
    - Create a Helderberg/Boland group where cyclists can upload bike related crime so that it gets more community involvement. Here you can also upload the work you do to recover bikes or prevent thefts - otherwise a donation will likey only be a once off thing.

    Yes, I have (in 2016 - 2019).
I always got back about 50% more than the annual service fee, which made it worth it. I do those events anyway, so as long as I get more back, it's worth going for.

Now that it's only 50% (if signed up on/before 31/01/2022), it's worth it for half the number of races required. For me, Ride4Sight, Emperors Classic, 947 and Amashova would give me close to R800 back compared to the R495 sign up fee. Petty change, but the nett result funds my 947 entry.

Okay nice. Will try and find a list of all the races the give discount on.

Lol, my wife was pregnant in 2020, during hard lockdown v1. With everything going on with reduced salaries etc, our discovery loyalty proved it was all worth it. We literally got 50% of our food spend back for every purchase. As in Spend R3k on healthy food, get R1.5k back a few days later…and that lasted for the 9 months she was pregnant + 6 months after the kid was born. To put it in perspective, even though medical covers delivery etc, that saving on the food alone would have been enough to pay for the birth cash.

100% worth it in the end. it has been mentioned on here but you cant half-ars it though…you use it to it’s fullest or you just dont have it in the first place. Use everything to get max benefit. If you are in it for ‘just free coffee’ then you are wasting your money.

Well done - glad to hear that.

Yeah I think I agree. Either plan it and get to a proper tier and then use the stores in the system or don’t bother.

Nee come on - you have to get the R25,000 carbon Specialized one. Because children really remember that sort of thing and who cares about the homeless digging in the garbage bins when she rides in the front yard, scraping against the water fountain on her carbon Spez.

Don't mind me, I'm just trying to stir.

I am getting my little girl a bike for her birthday. It will just be for her to ride in the yard and maybe the park, so I don't want to get something expensive.

I do want it to last a decent amount of time as it is a 16" and as she is quite small, this should last at least 2 years.

I have found the Totem Princess and an Avalanche Zoid in our area. Which would be better for our purposes? Or is there any other in that price range (under R2000) that I should be looking for in the Durban area?

    Thanks for any advise.

I have been working from home since March 2020. Maybe I am very busy all day or my fridge does not contain any snacking type food but I have escaped being best friends with my fridge

my house does not have any snacks , sweets , chocolates, biscuits or chips . If we feel like a treat we have to go to nearest shop

also have no alcohol or sugar in the cupboards

and my colleagues say I am lucky that I am lean and don’t put on weight🤔

I would be able to do all that except the alcohol part.

I've purchased an American Classic wheelset, and have not been able to source the adaptor for the QR hub to convert it to a 15mm thru axle to run on my thru axle fork.
Does anyone know if its possible to instead covert my thru axle fork to take a QR wheel?

I have one lying around if you want to buy it.

pm me and I can send you some details.

You can't expect phhenning to contribute to STF because it's for the greater good of the community that he isn't a part of.  Especially if he doesn't agree with their modus operandi.

You also obviously don't know him personally .  He has built up enough trail equity through drainage improvements, brush cutting and maintenance every winter. The type of guy who goes for a ride in the morning, and then hikes out in the afternoon with a spade and a saw to go fix the latest storm damage.

But hey, he doesn't agree with you, so he is what's wrong with society.

I never said he doesn’t do his part but bad mouthing an organisation that does great work is not on.

But I think the issue is that they only run on funding from outside and they cater for everyone not just mountain bikers. But that comes back to the point of if you don’t support them or give them your feedback and get the other side of the story then don’t bad mouth them on a public forum. And if you don’t ride their trails then I’m not sure why he commented at all.

    Au contraire.

You are missing phenning's point. Or just dismissing it.

He is choosing with his wallet and putting money where he sees it adding value. You are trying to impose what you find value in, on someone who really doesn't care about what's important to you. When it comes to HIM paying HIS money, it is about him and the trails he wants to ride.

The trails in Eden was better 10 years ago, flip, it was better 15 years ago. And it was a better outdoor space then too. STF has just formalised what has always been there (not a bad thing) and dumbed down the trails to a lower common denominator ito skills (definitely a bad thing.) They haven't added any new trails in Eden. Just built subpar berms and jumps where it wasn't necessary. They have built a bit of trail next to the river, but if (like phhenning) you don't live in Stellenbosch, so it's much of a muchness.

I am a Winelands Regional member, but I would have joined anyway if the STF wasn't part of it. Getting Wannabees, Helderberg, Paarl, Franschoek and Wellington on one plate is 👌

It's all about us yes. Please don't impose anything on anyone - we should all be free to choose whatever we want. Especially if it is our money.

This is basically everything that's wrong with society. We've come to believe the lie that it's all about me.

I live in Stellenbosch and when I came back from riding the W2W, I rode through Eden, Paradyskloof and Gspot and realised just how privileged we are to have some of the best mountain biking trails in the country.

The team from STF, who works on donations btw, work endlessly to maintain trails and a general outdoor routes and areas for everyone. Not just mountain bikers. They've managed to make Konoliesland safe again and they've managed to dramatically improve the safety of Botmaskop.

It's a fantastic organisation that does more for mountain biking and general outdoor activities than I could ever do. And using their trails doesn't cost a cent.

Comes down to the quality and type of trails they produce, wanabees trails are mainly dirt roads through farms and the trail fund have dumbed down trails in Ededn and surrounds,  have men sweeping the  forest floor with brooms and burming every turn.

You're missing the point - it's not about you and the types of trails you like to ride.

Trail building creates jobs, it creates cycling/hiking/jogging awareness and it creates a nicer outdoor space which increases the safety of that area and keeps unwanted dodgy characters out.

I prefer not to have my money go to STB trail fund or wannabees.  I`l be sticking to the jonker famaly pass and helderbeg.

I like the idea of supporting the trails i use and enjoy

You obviously either live under a rock or you have no idea the extent to which Stellenbosch Trail Fund contribute towards creating routes for cyclists, hikers, joggers etc and the value it adds in vagrants finding other places to camp.

  12. Anyone seen the new Wine Lands Regional permit? Bought one on Tuesday because it's very much worth it and to support the industry.

Haha wow sorry about that! As you can see I am pretty clueless... 🙃

I think you would be best off chatting to someone reputable who won't try to take you for a ride.

At your price range I wouldn't even look at a suspension fork, I'd just look at a cruiser and try get a decent shifter and rear derailleur.

Take @RobertWhitehead up on his offer - he's a well respected guy around here and he'd be able to give you good advice.

  14. Not sure when the newer model of the Racing Ralph was released but I recently bought a pair of RRs (speed addix or whatever soft compound they use for racing) and mine seems to wear very quickly thus far.

Think I'll go to Maxxis or Onza next round.

I like carrying whatever I may need for trail side repairs with me, along with some snacks and hydration.. I have a camelback rogue and it does what I need it to do.. however, I don't like how it makes my back sweat etc..

So the next best thing would be a hip pack.. I have not had much like with a variety available here though.. best i have come across, in terms of space, is an Osprey branded one from sportsmans warehouse..

If you have one, where did you buy it or where else can I look..?

If you don’t like how it makes your back sweat then I think you also won’t like how a hip pack will make your lower back sweat.

    Hey Guys!

I haven't been on here in years and I've now got a Chinese Carbon hardtail 29er frame that I'm lookimg to respray quite simply (gloss black) to build. Who in CT can do this well, cost effectively and fast?

Cant wait to have this ready to roll and hit the trails again.

    Cheers
    Sam

I won't use Bogus/Anton and fast in the same sentence. I know a lot of other people had a great experience with him but mine was crap to say the least.

    Hi all

    Can someone maybe explain

I had a nice Carbon bike, got damaged and need to replace it now,
but for the past 3-4 years I never relay looked at buying  a new one and only read through new release articles

But now that I need to buy one..

Is Carbon out and Aluminium in now a days ? as Alumium bikes cost more than what Carbon bikes use to cost and carbon bikes are even worse

did I miss something or did bikes really get this expensive ??????

If you think the price of a carbon Dual Sus 29er is bad then you should check out the prices on carbon 12" kids bikes at your nearest Specialized.

Decided to treat the Cheeks and get a new seat.

I saw some nice ones for around R500 or so at Cycle Lab with padding and gel and what what,

What are the factors to look at when buying a seat, all I know now is that there's seats for Males and Females? And it's R500 a decent enough budget for a weekend warrior just starting out.

Saddles, I find, are very personal. I also don't see a stong correlation between price and comfort.

Start with your sit-bone width, then think of padding (medium to medium soft for most people), then think of cutout or no-cutout - my butt can't stand the rounded shape of a Fizik Gobi but other people find it very comfortable.

Lastly, don't underestimate the comfort of a quality bib.

Replace your chain before 0.5% and your cassette and chainring should last indefinitely.

At 1000 hours a year, a chain a month isn't ridiculous, but if you're fully degreasing your chain every wash you need to make sure that the chain is properly dry inside before lubing, and that you put enough lube on and spin the chain for long enough to get the lubricant to penetrate all the way to the pins before the solvent evaporates if you're using a wax lube. It's also best to do this all the night before so it gets a chance to dry before you ride - wax lube doesn't work very well with solvent in it.

Please expand on the first part. I’ve had a theory that a cassette should ladt at least 2-3 chains. Indefinitely is definitely intriguing.
