As far as the PPA goes, anyone banned will not receive a number and their chip will be flagged so it will be known they are riding a timed event. In addition, marshals will be aware and are pretty observant. In addition, the cycling community does have responsibility to flag the guys should they ignore the ban. Yes, they may do the odd ride but not the "big" rides and without results.

PPA RIDE FOR YOUR LIFE AWARENESS RIDE Saturday 8 March 2014 06h45 VENUE: Maiden's Cove, Camps Bay Join us on Saturday morning for the PPA Ride for Your Life, an awareness ride to focus attention on cyclists' safety. There will also be a moment's silence to commemorate cyclists who have lost their lives on the roads in the past year. For maximum impact, we need as many cyclists to attend as possible, so we urge you to support this initiative. We appeal to all cyclists to show your support for the safe cycling campaign by wearing your PPA "1.5m" safe cycling jersey for this ride. Coffee will be on sale at Maiden's Cove from 06h30, with the ride starting at 07h00. Safe cycling jerseys will be on sale at the venue from 06h15-09h30. The jerseys cost only R200 each, as, in the interest of safe cycling, PPA is subsidising each jersey by R100. There is no fixed route: The furthest turning point is the lookout point on Chapman's Peak, but you can turn around sooner, provided it is safe to do so. You are also welcome to simply ride along with the group for a short while as part of your pre-Cycle Tour leg loosener and then continue along your own route (but please still wear your safe cycling jersey). ThinkBike marshals and traffic officers will assist en route, but there are no route markers and limited point marshals. Back at the venue, breakfast rolls, coffee and pancakes will be on sale until 09h30. You have the right to ride where you feel safe, and any vehicle behind you is breaking the law if they pass you within 1m of your outmost extremity. Here is the actual wording: 3. I've posted a number of responses, starting very early on page 1. And I guess if you read them you can sense my outrage. Officially PPA has required the clubs to make written statements by lunch time tomorrow before handing it to the PPA disciplinary committee for a decision. And I believe there will be a response from the clubs as they do operate within the PPA framework. I'll post more when it happens, rather than preempt due process.

My group passed these guys on Sunday, well before this event and they most certainly were not riding in a considerate and orderly manner, even then. Luckily they were much slower than us so we didn't see them again.

From the Cycle Tour website: The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust condemn in the strongest possible terms the incident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning. The kind of behavior displayed is totally unacceptable. The Trust will be working together with the Pedal Power Association to identify those involved, following which the names will be forwarded to the authorities for a formal investigation, the outcome of which will determine the consequences for those involved. News just in, after a request from Western Cape Cycling PPA has provided the funding to ensure that the WP Track Championships go ahead as scheduled on 15 and 16 March this year. As William Newman, President, Cycling South Africa says "Just another example of what PPA does for our sport."

You forget calendar fees, day licence or annual licence fees paid by the rider and this R6 tax. So in all, having an event sanctioned by CSA adds costs to the entry fee for EVERY participant although only a few, ie the pros, benefit from having a CSA presence. At a typical non league funride with 2,000 participants, the extra costs for the organiser for absolutely no benefit is thousands and thousands of rondts. The court found that CSA has no right to insist on the organisers paying this tax. Even the UCI has suspended their stupid rule about sanctioned events.

The seamless model could work for CLUB riders, however what CSA tried to do was tax EVERY rider who went to an event. And you agree with this. The poor organiser has to pay CSA thousands to be able to run the event resulting in increases entry fees which lead to moaning about price increases and often drop off in numbers. Cycling became the only sport taxed in this way. Could you imagine a rugby or soccer player having to PAY SARU to run onto the pitch. PPA objected to this tax for recreational riders, the court agreed. Out of interest, or not, PPA subsidizes every funride that records riders times to the tune of R20k on average. This is deemed to be a benefit offered to members of the PPA in return for their loyalty.

Make two decent products IMNSHO: The double seatpost clamp where you have 2 diameters and two clamps, one on the post and one on the frame. The rear mount seatpost bottle cage mount, although the Ryder set is half the price. And the local agent is a nightmare. Lovely thread. 3 gents with an axe to grind against PPA as PPA won't fund their version of cycling utopia where many are taxed for a few to benefit, through either being sent to Worlds or through prize money in league races. And only 1 of these 3 has bothered to sit down and draft a discussion paper that might add value to the process when PPA sits down and works out how best to continue to boost the cycling. In the mean time, PPA's biggest single expense is the ride safe campaign, Stay Alive at one point five. Only an imbecile would argue that improving the safety for ALL cyclists on our roads is not a worthy goal for a voluntary organisation representing recreational cyclists. PPA constitution states at paragraph 3: “The main purpose and object of the association is to promote cycling and the interests of cyclists. Without limiting the generality of the aforegoing, the association shall have the following ancillary objectives: (a) to be a representative body for the furtherance of the interests of cyclists; (b) to promote cycling as a recreational activity, a sport and as a means of transportation; © to improve conditions for cyclists with particular regard to their safety; (d) to arrange and organise cycle tours, fun rides and outings; (e) to co-ordinate cycle tours, fun rides and outings organised by other bodies and to assist them in their efforts; (f) to establish contact and liaise with and where appropriate affiliate with other organisations having similar or alike interests and objectives.“ If you would like the funding of pro cycling, sending riders to worlds or big increases in prize money, I suggest you get the PPA through general meeting attendance of a majority of the in excess of 20,000 members to change the constitution to suit yourselves. A bit like CSA did. But as it stands right now, PPA is not permitted to spend members funds on the select few.
