  6. This is written in your instruction manual that you should have gotten with your wheels/bike. You should also have gotten the relevent tool (plastic looking wrench) My link Mavic QRM+ Adjustment Explained We here at Dragons Sports are committed to keeping you, the customer, informed and updated with news and features of our products. Today we'll be highlighting the Mavic QRM+ bearings and the proper steps to take to ensure correct bearing play and increase the lifespan of you wheels systems. When buying a Mavic wheel system from one of our dealers, remember to have the following steps done, either by the dealer or yourself, to get the full performance for your wheels. 1. HUBS 1.1 FREE PLAY ADJUSTMENT Hub play must always be gauged with the wheel fitted and tightened in the frame or fork. Tightening the quick release skewer significantly increases the lateral pressure exerted on the bearings. Therefore: • if there is play in a wheel not fitted into the frame or fork, it may disappear once the wheel has been fitted; • if there is no play in a wheel not fitted into the frame or fork, it is possible that tightening the quick release skewer will over-stress the bearings, thus damaging them. Adjust the adjustment nut by fully tightening it and then untightening it by a 1/4 turn, so as to close the quick release lever (CLOSE position) with a suitably large force. However, a too large tightening force may damage the bearings. This tightening force is a subjective parameter that is directly dependent on the end user, and as such it is difficult to accurately determine the optimum bearing adjustment at the factory. In order to avoid any problems for your customers, we factory set bearing play by simulating an extreme quick release tightening force. There is therefore likely to be some play in the hub of a new wheel fitted to a bike with a lower quick release tightening force than that used in the factory. Apply the following procedures to set the amount of play. WARNING: Adjusting the play is a delicate operation which consists of identifying the balance point between play and no play. Having no play does not necessarily mean that the hub is correctly adjusted as the bearings may be over-stressed. 1.1.1. QRM+ HUB This hub has an adjustment nut on the left hand side of the wheel compatible with the hub wrench M40123. This very simple system allows very accurate and quick adjustment of bearing play. PROCEDURE Tools needed • 1 hub wrench M40123 1. Fit the wheel in the frame or fork and tighten the quick release skewer using a reasonable force; 2. Delicately move the top of the wheel to the right and then the left of the bike to feel the play; • If there is some play, lightly tighten the adjustment nut using the hub wrench M40123 and check for play: repeat the operation as many times as required until there is no play; • If there is no play, to be sure the bearings are not over-stressed, untighten the adjustment nut until some play can be felt and then carry out the above operation. The 4 lugs of the hub wrench M40123 must be fully inserted into the holes of the adjustment nut, making sure to correctly position the wrench against the nut (on Crossmax XL Disc and Deemax UST front wheels, only the 2 lugs at the extremities of the wrench are used). To avoid damaging the bearings due to over tightening of the adjustment nut, the wrench M40123 is made from resin: a sort of safety valve; the lugs will break before the bearings are damaged.
  7. Unless I've mis-read something here I think all you need to do is buy a Campaq Freebody for the Cosmic wheel. They should be about R850.00 from any good bike shop.
  8. Giant (and a few other brands incl Scott)) do not state weights anymore. You'll find this on the websites: "How much does this bike weigh? It’s a common question, and rightly so. But the truth is, there are no industry standards for claiming bike weights—and this leads to a lot of misinformation. Variances exist based on size, frame material, finish and hardware. And as bikes get lighter, these differences become more critical. At Giant, we believe the only way to truly know the weight of any particular bike is to find out for yourself at your local retailer" With the CPA coming into effect next month, companies will have to be very carefull about how they advertise and the claims they make about their products weights etc. There will only be one model with one spec. Maybe more to follow if Giant thinks there is a demand for lower spec. This bike will, touch wood, be in SA in July. (depending on Customs, Shipping, the weather etc.)
  9. Giant only uses two main dropouts on 90% of their MTB bikes (Reign X and Glory have their own). We code them as DR-01, which fits on the outside of the frame (all lower to mid end MTBs and older model XTC) and DR-15, which fits on the inside of the frame (Maestro and newer XTC range). These are availible from any good bike shop and should not be more than R90. Dr-15 is even avialible in colours Green, Purple, Red and Grey. You can see the dropout s here: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-ZA/partsaccessories/product/dr.01/2007/34792/

  12. Here are some extra photos of the frame in question. The damage was not caused by faulty paint quality but rather the addition of an adhesive tape and after a prolonged time, the attemped removal of the tape, which seems to have been baked on by the weather. Here is the original Emails sent to and from the store. -----Original Message----- From: Sent: 18 January 2011 10:29 AM To: Cc: Subject: RE: 2010 Giant Anthem X2 - paint coming off (pictures) Hi As discussed the damage to the frame was caused by external factors and we cannot process a warranty claim on the evidence provided. Kan jy vir ons se wat die warranty is met dit? Regards -----Original Message----- From: Sent: 13 January 2011 01:50 PM To: Subject: 2010 Giant Anthem X2 - paint coming off (pictures) Hi I trust you are recovering well! As discussed over the telephone, I have taken a few pictures of where the paint has been coming off the frame on the 2010 Giant Anthem X2 I bought from you at the end of August 2010. I have used a product called "Sellotape All Weather Tape". I used it to protect the frame and paint job, and was told of this product by a lady friend of mine who races mountain bikes professionally and has never had any trouble with it on her carbon Schwinn. I have attached a picture of the product. When rolled out it leaves a very slight green hue as compared to the white on the frame. I used this tape to protect my frame during the very muddy Sabie Experience a few weeks ago (16-19 December 2010) and it worked well! The head tube, top tube, down tube and chain stays were covered. I took most of it off when I got back, without any trouble. I left the pieces which were covering the head tube on. I decided to take this off when I was on holiday and as I pulled it off I heard what sounded like a tearing sound. I noticed that the GIANT decal on the right hand side had started to come off on the N. I immediately the section which was no longer on the bike back onto the frame. You see I could line it up 100%. A few days later I also noticed that the paint between the front derailleur and the frame on the seat tube was also flaking off. There was never any protective tape in this area. Most of the paint which has come off is covered by the front derailleur, but you can just see it on the photos. I'm unsure what Giant would say about something like this. While the frame is still fully functional ( and is a really sweet bike) its not something I expected when I bought the bike. Normal wear and tear, such as cable chafing etc is expected, hence the use of the protective tape. You guys still installed the white cables for me post Sabie, but it also seems as if the previous ones also dug in to the rear suspension linkages quite nastily. I've had 8 Giants in my life time, and there have been 15 in our family over the passed 21 years. This is the first time something of the sort happens. It is a pity because other then this the bike is EXCEPTIONAL! I'm a HUGE Giant fan and just managed to get my hands on a mid 90's Giant Boulder. I'm planning on restoring and doing the Argus with it this year :-) Would you mind sending this on to Dragons/Giant? Please also BCC me in the emails, it'd be nice to see what they say. Thanks man. I'm NERVOUS for Attakwas! -- Regards Romans 5:8 "God demonstrated His awesome love for us in this; While we were His enemies, Christ died for us."

  16. Thanks for the positive feedback and comments. We sent this info out to the dealers earlier this week but there is still some confusion. "Please take note of the following: There is a recall on a limited number of Anthem X 29er bikes sold in the United States. None of the units sold in South Africa will be subject to this recall. Also note that the White/Blue Anthem X 29er was a special order from our side. This made it possible for us to get some stock at an earlier date and is not related to any recall. 19. Now I know what you are looking for. Sorry but the 2010 XTC 29er Alliance was only availible in the US and not availible to SA. It seem to have been less popular than the normal Aluxx framed bike as it is not part of the 2011 range at all. The Defy Alliance was a model that we tried a couple years back and had very poor feedback/interest and sales. These have also been discontinued for 2011. Giant does not have any Alliance bikes for 2011, in any territory, showing that they were, indeed, not that popular. I'm sorry that we can't get you what you want but as I said earlier, if a bike/frame from the South Africa/International range of bikes is availible and a customer is willing to give a store a deposit and wait the +-4 months it will take, then we will happily order the bike/frame. As of about April this year Giant and nearly every other manufacturer stopped making 2010 bikes and is only making the 2011 models.
  20. I'm still waiting to find out what Giant frame this is he wants. I've asked around the office and no one knows what Coenie is on about. We had a store in CT ask if a Anthem X frame was availible in Black but unfortunatly it isn't an aftermarket colour. There is no 2010 Anthem X bike in black either. If it's not this bike Coenie wants, then he should tell me what he wants. Then we can look into it closer. When we import a frame, that is not part of our regular range, we ask for the store to confirm the order by taking a deposit. In the past it has happened that we import a bike or frame for a customer and when it arrives the customer rejects the sale or has vanished. We can only import from the International range of bikes.
