  1. It is impossible to always stop at red lights as some only change when over 200kg is on the mat. Afraid I don't weigh that much even with both bikes. Also, it is safer when commuting to avoid stopping and unclipping in traffic. The most dangerous and vulnerable time is while you are clipping in and getting up to speed. As a result, I do whatever is safest for me - if that means going through a red light then so be it. Stop's I always stop at unless they are badly designed and should be a yield. Also very seldom stop at traffic lights or stops where I am turning left - there is no reason why these cannot be treated as yields at best.
  2. Large format IMAX is probably not that well suited to DVD. It is a good watch - especially when you get to see roads that you hav ridden. The main focus is on Jimmy Casper (2x lanterne rouge) and to a lesser extent some of his FDJ teammates.
  3. Actually the editor should always ask. I know Adele from Ride always asks for every article. Anything published on this site or any other belongs to the publisher. There is definitely copyright on photos posted here ~ whether that copyright vests with Crux or Admin when lifted from this site is slightly more complex but the forum rules dictate that copyright remains with the poster (also protects Admin to a degree).
  4. The best of the "no-towbar required" bootracks is the Saris Bones. The distributors are Bicyclepower - www.bicyclepower.co.za.
  5. [Q U O T E =bruce] I suspect that my command of the English language would render me incapable sir (aren't you involved in journalism or something similar?) Only in my spare time and as the guys at Chainwheel will testify I have not had much of that in the past 18 months. I'm an accountant by trade, and I had some interesting data analysis to do but no time to do it and no-one with adequate technical ability to pass it onto.

    Bike bags

Travelled all over with my bike in a standard bag (R600 from any bike shop). Use a Stride splint to protect the fork, rear derailleur and hangar (www.strides.co.za).
  7. ...That you need to help me do my work.
  8. Normally the jockey wheels become pointy before they crack, but it is possible for them to crack. You may find that the jumpy gearing caused the crack rather than the other way around. Check that you derailleur hangar is straight!
  9. Nowadays with the roads closed, speeds over 90 in the wet are easily achievable at the Shova. Even in normal training, you can use both lanes if the road is quiet and always get over 80kph I can relate to the tunnel issue. There is a tunnel on the descent of the Col d'Aubisque before the col du Soulour. For 100m it is totally dark and then the "light at the end of the tunnel" appears left of centre. Scary during the Etape as I entered the tunnel with 20 others ~ was sure that someone would turn to hard left!linnega2006-11-05 09:46:42
  10. I agree. The DNA testing is not even vaguely intrusive. As for the rights of the riders, they have brought the "being treated like criminals" on themselves. Only the riders can stop the culture of doping. They can blame the environment, doctors, teams as much as the like, but the buck stops with the riders. They choose to dope and act like criminals.
  11. The difference is that DNA profiling solves a lot of shortcomings in terms of blood testing. The riders will argue that the DNA profiles may be abused. This is unlikely since the UCI have been doing detailed analysis of testing results for many riders to increase and focus testing. This is how Hamilton got nabbed. DNA testing requires one hair, once. There is no test that is less intrusive. The only reason that riders really object is because it means they have to be even smarter to avoid being caught. Makes me wonder about Bettini and Valverde (who should have been implicated in Operacion Puerto). Valverde quotes in the press are particularly ludicrous.
  12. Looks like anyone would have difficulty when Frischknecht is averaging a little over 12kph!
  13. I had a few stickers with my name and the SA flag made last year before I went to ride the Etape. Now they have grown on me so I have stickers on all my bikes.
  14. I'm guessing the frame is an Anthem, Tazman? If so, the reason Dragon are dragging their heals is that they have failed to order enough stock and cannot even supply customers that have ordered and pre-paid months ago. I'm not making excuses for them as I believe that it is unacceptable for them to be unable to sufficiently guage demand to such an extent that your standard factory frames have a longer waiting list than custom frames. Having said that I have used the products Dragon's supply for years (probably as long as they have been around) and I have had zero issues except for the wait for my Anthem.
  15. ..and a crazy looking guy in a white coat with a dripping syringe ready to take away the pain.
  16. At Chainreaction you can get packs of 36 spokes for the following excluding VAT and shipping: - Champion R120 (R180 for black) - Competition R180 (R240 for black) - Revolution R240 (R300 for black) If you are paying more than that then you may as well import them.
  17. You can get Sapim's quickly from TotalCycling (www.totalcycling.com). They only sell then in packs of 20 though. Sadly, CRC (www.chainreactioncycles.co.uk) don't offer Sapim spokes in their builds so my MTB wheels have Revolution (even at 75kg I don't have problems, but I ride my MTB like a roadie).
  18. I'd second TT's recommendation. If you are not racing in bunches, semi aero rims like the Spinergy's and Ksyriums/Aksiums will not be of much benefit. If you are wanting to climb a lot, a set of bombproof and light wheels can be built with an Ultegra hub (I would be careful about AM hubs - they had many issues, whether these are resolved I don't know) and Mavic Open Pro rims. The spokes should either be DT Swiss Revolution or Sapim CXRay's to lighten the wheel more. At your weight there is little likelihood you will need extra strength spokes or more than 28 per wheel.

  20. No! The Cervelo Soloist maybe qualifies, but in general no road bikes could be classed as aero. Chris Boardman's Lotus bike was aero.
  21. I've seen how 90% of the field (including me) crap themselves at 1m/2m drop offs. I think that would scare 99%. Only the extremely confident and/or extremely stupid would even attempt that.
  22. Is it the derailleur hanger that broke or the dropout, and is the derailleur hanger removeable. Anything permanently attached to the frame should be covered by the frame warranty for manufacturing defects, but if the hanger snapped (removeable or not) the manufacturer would have a good case to argue that it is the result of impact while loading the bike or similar.
  23. Thats the certificate from 14/10/2006 which prevented the UCI from to using Puerto evidence until the criminal case is concluded. Doesn't clear him - as much as he would wish it so.
