  1. Skud skud, skud jou biscuit... all part of Gravel racing... bring it on 🤙
  2. Looking at the times from last year shows this race is seriously fast, I can see why it's suited to gravel bikes. I guess with similar elevation gain over 160km's to the Cape Town Cycle Tour that's too be expected. I'm considering doing it on one of my vintage bikes with 28C tires. Just hoping there's not too much mud otherwise I'll be in for a very long day 🤪
  3. So Sat looks like it going to be dry but somewhat chilly. How those roads are going to hold up to the all the rain coming on Thurs & Fri is going to be interesting, let's hope they won't become slush puppies.
  4. I frikkin knew it 🤣🤣 I heard it prevents unplanned pregnancies as well 🤙
  5. Maybe because you see it every day @J Wakefield but for the Average Joe that's a Double Century, the kind of event mere mortals train month for. While I have you here, that "Cherry" juice riders take directly after a stage, is it pure Cherry juice or a mixture of berries & apple juice? Or is it a cherry coloured masking agent? 😉
  6. Yeah I think the majority of the surface was a lot better this year than previous years so I can get that the gravel bikes were faster. Rooiberg descent in particular was so much better this year. The only suss spot was the river gorge towards the end of the race but that was short enough to take cautiously. Admittedly that last 20km section of gravel was bloody terrible, even with front suspension 😄 It's luck of the draw I guess, unless you pre-ride or have some insider knowledge before the race on the conditions. Either way, I was happy with my choice, both for gearing and suspension, it works for us older toppies 😊 What size tires did you run on your gravel bike @Skubarra
  7. I did the Half as well and was lucky enough to win the Team race, largely thanks to my partner (Mark from Mark's Bicycle Workshop) who was an absolute beast and dragged & pushed me through the last 60km's. I can't say much about the views because I was staring at a Vittoria terreno tire all day but apparently they were spectacular. We couldn't have asked for better weather or water points, it was superb although our stops were brief. Dryland certainly know how to put an event together... except for that 10km neutral section that wasn't part of the official 189km, that was a nasty surprise when I was staring at my Garmin praying for the pain to stop. When they eventually let us loose the start speed in the dark was insane. The gravel okes hit the front and hooked it. The first 20km's passed in a blur of dust and dim lighting. You needed nads of steel to sit a wheel in those conditions and hope to God you don't hit a lurker and end your race before it has really begun. Strongs to the young lady who lost it coming down Rooiberg, hope you heal up well and you are back on the bike soon. The choice of my hardtail over my gravel bike was the right one. After racing it a few years ago on my Revolt, I found the hardtail a lot better, especially on the faster downhills. I ran 47C gravel tires so needed to be careful at the river crossings but they rolled beautifully on the open road. In agreement with those beer prices, that was a joke. I don't need fancy Belgium beer after a race, Castle Lite will do just fine thanks. Sadly the numbers were down a lot on previous years. I'm not sure if that's related to the risk of poor weather, price of the entry fees or the poor economy or a combination of them all but the event certainly deserves to be supported based on the organizing alone, it was excellent.
  8. A mate of mine was attacked on Sunday afternoon around 5pm, very close to the Pot Belly Pantry on the R44 to Stellenbosch. Two perps forced him off the road in a vehicle and robbed him of his cell phone at gunpoint. They then tried driving off but got their vehicle stuck after veering too far off the road trying to corner him. They got out the vehicle again to try get the car unstuck and he pleaded with them to please give back his drivers license. They refused and he lost the plot and tackled the guy with the gun (yeah nuts, I know but he said his fight or flight instinct kicked in big time). A scuffle ensued in which he ended up wrestling with both of them. One broke free and kicked him badly while he was focusing on the guy with the weapon. He eventually subdued both and flagged down a good Samaritan who went to fetch the cops at Klapmuts. Both were arrested and are appearing in court today. Their vehicle was also impounded. He is beaten up quite badly from all the kicking but he's alive and positive and is determined to get these cowardly bastards prosecuted for their actions. Get well soon bud 👍
  9. Always a beautiful area to explore 👍
  10. That moegoe will think twice before coming back soon, he was dealt some justice by the public.
  11. Following Matts IG shows him doing some insanely huge rides lately with some of the locals including KS 250kms @ 35avs and then 300km's @ 32kms 😲... and the terrain isn't exactly flat. The oke's a beast ☠️
  12. 4 of us did a 4 day (3 riding days) Cederberg Tour towards the end of March. Arrived @ Cederberg Oasis Wed night - Great chow and tented accommodation. Departed Thurs morning after breakfast at Oasis. Day 1 - Oasis to Mertonhof Guest Farm in the Biedouw Valley via Eselbank & Wuppertal (stop for a swim at the waterfall). Mertonhof have a great guest house and full supper & breakfast can be arranged with the owner. Day 2 - Mertonhof Guest Farm to Jamaka Farm via Clanwilliam. Longest day but plenty places to stop for food & water. Day 3 - Chill at Jamaka and enjoy pizza & beer Day 4 - Jamaka to Oasis via Uitkyk Pass and Sandrif. Depart Oasis Sunday around lunch time after another great meal 🤙 Awesome route with some huge climbs to test your legs. We slept & ate like Kings 👍🍻
  13. This is so sad to read, my condolences to the family & friends. No one kisses their loved ones goodbye on the morning of an official race and expects never to see them again. No matter the causes, it's truly tragic and I'm sure has put a huge damper on everyone that did the race or was part of the organization team 😔
  14. I'd much rather have a 5% increase per year than a 33% increase out of the blue 😲
  15. Ordered on the 19th and received on the 26th April. That's better than some local companies. All goods as expected except the Spir grips for my MTB, they're too small to use mid bar and need to be used like bar-end grips. The gloves surprised me, for R61 the XL fits like.... erhmm, a glove 😊 Placed a small order of only R500 to first check the quality. The taxes were R87. I'll order again.
  16. The million dollar question... If you ask him he'll probably say "because he can"... or couldn't in this instance.
  17. This was unfortunately Pete Nelson, one of the top racing Masters. He just let me know now. He's fairly banged up with badly shattered collarbone and severe concussion. He can't recall anything so if anybody saw the crash, please give some feedback here.
  18. Maybe it's time we organize a Go Slow group ride up Hellshoogte with banners and all and invite the press?
  19. Lekka guys, what a great adventure, thanks for sharing it 🤙
  20. Those Cola Haribo's would go well with Brandy snaps 😉
  21. Is your bike so unique that it's not available in America?
  22. Sometimes it's hard to believe that there's so many liked minded nutters around the Cape that enjoy feeding their old vintage steel bikes a good dose of gravel road like I do 😄 This past Sunday was our 3rd annual Tour de Toeka ride which covers around 100km's from Brackenfell out to the beautiful & interesting Toeka Restaurant near Paarl, where we enjoyed a hearty brunch. Around 60% of the route is gravel and it's tackled on these beautiful classics from yesteryear 🤙
  23. Bike Market or Bike Addict?
  24. Just pulled the trigger... the free beer got me as well 🍻
  25. 7 of us had a crack at the CC again this past weekend. After doing it in 2023, we decided to try make it an annual event in April. I was once again reminded why it's called a Challenge. This ride really bites once you get to 130km's and from then on it tests your mental and physical limits. We started in the dark at 5:30am and finished as the sun dipped below the horizon, with a total time of around 13hrs. It was a big day out but a truly magical day on the bike, sharing great experiences with good friends 🤙
