  1. Hi Guys,

Shew, yesterday our club rode through Tarlton in the West Rand.  We normally use Ontdekkers & go out to the Cradle either Kugersdorp Hill or Sterkfontein but due to needing extra mileage, we decided to go pass Tarlton and to the Maropeng Turn (Berge en Dale route)

The road was covered in rocks, burnt tyres, cars etc and by the time we decided to turn around, we were in the middle of a whole bunch of angry children/ teenagers with huge stones & rocks ready to throw at us. Lucky, we had 2 members who spoke to them and tried to calm them down as we tried to get through the debris and make it to the Maropeng turn. As our last rider got through, a stone was thrown but if it started earlier, who knows what would've happened?

    From my club member:

"Today we rode on the R24 between Krugersdorp and Magalies. About 10 km from the Krugersdorp Game reserve, the route goes through a squatter camp and there was a protest with road closure. Kids who are around 10 years old had picked up stones and were ready to throw them at us as we were passing through the area.

I do not know why the people decided to close the road.
I do not know why they were protesting.
I really don’t know what the issues were.

I thought to myself, in 10 years time if these people’s issues are not resolved they will also teach those who come after them that this is the way of resolving problems. So the cycle continues.

I can make assumptions of what the issues are and I am sure my assumptions would be pretty much close to what the issues are. To avoid long debates with my friends who are politicians I will assume a reckless driver was speeding through the area and he hit someone’s chicken in a hit and run.

    What a sad day!!"

This is why Wilro Cycle Race was cancelled if I'm not mistaken. No police warning signs or anything to warn us of what was ahead!

  2. Anyone having issues trying to enter Amashova this morning?

Tried but keeps on telling me the 160km is closed, I don't qualify. I can't access the 106km route option (Which I want to enter for)

  3. Hi all

Have any of you gone through the process of setting up an official charity?

I would like to know where do you start, fees involved, requirements and more.

I have recently heard of a community with children between the ages of 7 and 15, who only has 1 or 2 sets of clothing, neither the boys or girls have underware. And then we have not even started on the things they need for school.

I have spend quite a large amount of money at PEP and bought a few things, but it is not sustainable.

This is the reason for me asking. I am able to help them, but not on my current system.

I do not know how to get started.

    HI,

Yes, I've been involved in the Non-Profit/ Charity sector for the last 10 years.

If you would like to chat privately, no problem at all.

What s your intention? How long would you be willing to keep this sustainable on your own?

IF you want to expand & make it more official, then go this route:

I would suggest you start a NPO/ NPC if your have the funds available. (Plenty admin work getting everything compliant)

Next step is to apply with SARS for a PBO (Public Benefit Organisation) which makes the organisation Tax Exempt. (Section 18A)

Then you can open bank accounts, and can ask for Donations and give Section 18A certificates for all donations. Has to be run like a corporate and submit to SARS etc yearly.

With this structure, you can source funding from the business/ corporate sector, government ( :whistling: ) and the general public.

Or if you can just gather a few mates, get them to sign debit orders every month even if its starts small, and go from there! Well done on this initiative, please shout if you need help & all the best!

  4. Hi guys,

Join me in mornings/afternoon from Ferndale/Cresta/Darrenwood/Northcliff, down HP,  to Cradle and back.

Once you getting into HP its a breeze, then into cradle for some intervals.

    Avg around 28-30kph

    Howdy sunchaser,

May I please share some advice, Our club meets at the Mcdonalds (Ontdekkers/ Gordon rd) around 7am now in Winter for our raining rides. You are more than welcome to join us.

Please try & avoid HP (Hendrik Potgieter) as much as possible. Esmero & NH Cycling clubs use Ontdekkers instead & head to the Cradle this way as we have had endless incidents, issues & fatal accidents on HP. From ClearWater Mall to Silverstar, that shoulder lane is a law onto their own esp Taxi's & impatient drivers.

    Enjoy & be safe!

  5. I am on the market for a good power meter. Just wondering if any hubbers with garmin vector 3s or any other good power meters who can comment on its pros and cons.

    Here you go bud:

    https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2017/11/garmin-vector-3-power-meter-review.html

    I'd also look at:

    -Stages

    -Power 2 Max

    -Quarq

    -Rotor

    -SRM

    -Powertap

    https://www.bikeradar.com/road/gear/article/best-power-meters-for-cycling-42508/

  6. So what would the advantage be in dropping twice the cost of my bike on a power meter ?

Other than knowing how little power I actually have in my legs, even if I'm able to make heads or tales of the data extracted, how does it help me ?

Nothing like Power Training ouzo! (In my humble opinion)

I trained on Heart rate before my power meter. (Gains were not too bad)

Chalk & Cheese with structured power training...

Power Training is absolute must for Cyclists wanting to improve fitness & performance!

  7. I have no idea why the Power 2 Max units were not mentioned here. (If i missed it, sorry hubbers)

Got mine in Late December 2015 & haven't looked back.

I have not had any issues with these & replaced maybe 2/3 batteries at most.

Awesome piece of equipment, accurate, strong, reliable & not badly priced at all.

    https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/01/power2max-power-meter-in-depth-review.html

Here’s a quick table of the pros and cons of the Power2Max Power Meter.

    Pros:

    – ‘It just works’ factor
    – Accurate power measurement
    – Temperature Compensation in second generation units
    – Relatively straight forward installation
    – Cadence without a cadence magnet
    – Contains have left/right estimated power
    – Do not have to send back in if changing chainrings

    Cons:

    – No method to turn off Auto Zero
    – Tiny delay in cadence readings

As long as it works for you, go for it!

  8. fever has not returned since visiting the doc on monday, head pain comes and goes. Had tight chest again last night though, but then I was stressing a fair amount about a personal issue.

What did/does worry me is that I broke out into a nasty rash on my on tuesday, not sure if its the meds or something I ate. Most of it went away after a shower and some ointment, but there are still some bumps left that itch.

I'm seeing her again on monday as she wants to check blood pressure again.

Sounds like a allergic reaction to the meds/ anti-biotics.

Glad to hear you're better bud.

    Sounds nasty!

  9. Last week Thursday started getting the shivers at work, by the time I left at 17:30 my fingers were tingling and my chest was tight.

started mentally mapping the closest hospitals on the route home but decided to head home anyway.

Put on 3 layers of clothing, jumped under the duvet and a blanket, once the shivers had stopped got the wife to make me some toast so that i could take some cold and flu meds.

Head was pounding, took the meds went back to sleep with a cold facecloth over my head, woke up later sweating profusely, wet facecloth again, go back to sleep.

Next day wasnt feeling great but continued with flu meds. Chest still tight.

Monday at work the fever started coming back, left early and headed to doc.

Onset of flu she says, have a few meds for the symptons and something to open your chest.

Every movement of the head sent sharp pains through the head, it has since subsided a little.

Strange thing is though other than the symptons described here I've not had any other flu symptons, no congestion, no coughing, no sore throat.

was so hoping to get some nice rides in this long weekend, but it looks like thats not going to happen

Sounds like a Viral Infection, I suggest head to casualty soonest!

    Fever is never good

I might be wrong but rather be safe than Sorry bud!

Or are you on the mend?

  10. Howzit Bud,

I stay in the Northcliff area & sometimes cycle to where my club meets (3-5km)

If you want, come ride a few times with my club. Esmero Cycling!

We meet at the Mcdonalds (Cnr Ontdekkers/ Gordon), we leave now around 6:15am -6:30am depending. (Sunrise much later)

We go down Ontdekkers, go to Cradle via Sterkfontein. And we do other routes in this area.

Please stay away from Hendrik Potgieter. Taxi's & cars are a law onto their own here & we've had pretty bad experiences.

Please join us this long weekend, we have a bumper filled weekend of rides which includes Cradle, Satellites & Randfontein.

    PM me if needed

  11. My alarm went off at 4am and I thought fuckthisshit, but I toughened up and rode AL and chilled in the main bunch. Saw some dude go down around the 20km mark and we had a few twitchy moments later on when the 60k route joined up. Always going to be an issue and I don't see how things will change.. Bottom line is that its flat and fast race so you need to have your game on and stay focused and not ride like a ****. That said I'm going to move up to VB and test those waters.

Came in at 2:58 with the main bunch in a sprint.

AND So cool to see a sold out event. Its a good sign folks.

    100% my race report too!

All was fine in the main bunch until we met with the 62km riders.

Was sitting 8/10th wheel when was caught behind a tandem, then a dude with huge tricycle wheels. Managed to get a gap & re-joined in 30th place.

Also, that little zig-zag @ Carnival with the cones, Jeez, guys went straight on & re-joined later. Nearly took out the traffic police stationed there.

I had work to do, but finished strongly with the bunch in 2:58

    Solid ride from the guys.

Can't believe Stefano & Ari broke away & stayed away!

    Power!

  12. I never minded riding in the rain until 2 weeks ago.

Easing down a flat, slight touch of oil on the road and back wheel disappeared under me. Slid for about 10 metres. Kit torn and lekker roasties.

Hip and shoulder still sore from the fall. Lucky, bike not damaged at all.

    Won't do it again!

    100% Mate!

    Will give it another go....

  13. Flip, what happened that such an early group got congested?

No idea, but we were at least 50/60 strong and came to a complete halt as we couldn't pass this bunch heading into Simons Town. Trying to get through was a nightmare. By the time we got through, at least 15/20 stronger guys were off in the distance.

Then, managed to organise a group to push on, going well, then bang, another bunch caught a kilometer before Chappies. Same routine, After I got out, I time trialed all the way to the finish with some guys.

I have no idea how some people got seeded like this. Hoping 1C is better.
