  1. Far more profitable for the Epic to have riders pull out / not make cut-off. Catering for 800 people for 8 days versus planning to start catering for 800 people and taper it down to 400 7 days later.

  2. Not sure if I am at fault. But I'm looking for a specific saddle. It comes up now and then in the classifieds off of someones new bike and they change the saddle. Problem is the saddle is advertised on here as new and at full market price. I query and offer less based on the fact I am not getting any warranties with the product. Am I being unreasonable or not?

  3. I had an interesting experience last month. I broke one of my brake levers after hitting a fence. With Sani coming up I went straight to a nearby cycle shop to replace the lever. Mechanic gives me a quote for new Shimano SLX levers and labor cost and I immediately/incorrectly assume I'm getting over charged. I quickly review some popular online stores and to my surprise the 2 online stores I quickly looked at while standing in the shop all had Shimano SLX brake levers on sale with a large discount advertised. The one online store had a banner of "30% off". The funny thing though is that the price for the brakes on these websites and what I was getting charged at the bike shop differed by maybe R100. And that includes the labor to fit the brakes. I asked the mechanic if the brakes were on special and he replied "No. That is our normal price". So I started comparing items in the shop to the same items on these 2 online stores, and the prices for the same products were identical and in some cases cheaper than the online stores. Even though the online stores had "10/20/30% off banner" over the product. It was only then that I saw on 1 of the sites, the marked discount is based on "RRP". So the discount offered or advertised by the online stores is not necessarily a discount on their normal selling price, it is more a discount percentage on some arbitrary recommended selling price of the product. Is this legally misleading or false advertising? Probably not. Is this a clever way to mislead me to drive sales and hype around drawing attention to "40/50/60%" discounts? Yes.

  4. So we can deduce that at that age, and that time of the morning it was most likely alcohol induced. The fact that this now can't be proved means he will have a reduced sentence than if he stopped on the scene and helped, and turned himself in (ie. the right thing to do).

    That is a twisted outcome

Doesn't bring Nino back, just hope that while it goes onto the stack of incidents there is increased legislation/awareness/respect for cyclist/driver relationship.

This is where the law should be amended to have an outcome that should the culprit remain at the scene to assist the cyclist and he/she is under the influence, the law should punish accordingly. And if the culprit leaves the scene whether under the influence or not; the law should punish in probably a stricter manner than under the influence. Because fleeing the scene of an accident just highlights that you are not a decent human and probably should be removed from society for your transgressions.

  5. This was my 3rd year in a row and it was the best route and ride out of the 3 years. Well done guys! I thinking seeding riders is a must for next year due to the growth of the event. I'm a solid mid-pack rider and within the first 10kms of riding I almost got taken out 3 times by faster riders having absolutely no regard for the safety of people they were over taking. I can only imagine they arrived late to the venue and hence were stuck near the back of the start chute.

  6. I thought it was a fantastic event! The setting was spectacular and Stillwater Sports managed the event extremely well and professionally. I was expecting and easy pedal over the weekend but I struggled out there. The route was far tougher than I anticipated and I was grateful that the water points are well stocked.

  7. Hi hubbers. I recently changed to a 1X11 setup with a 34t. It has been great and worked just fine for the spruit, up Northcliff Hill, Modder, Northern Farm but on a training ride at Suikerbos yesterday I was fine up until the last big climb. My legs had no power left and I made it to the top in my worst strava time. My question now is, should I change to a 32t for Sani or take a 32t with and get mechanic to change for day 2 only. I'm not too worried about day 1 and 3 on a 34t. Day 2 scares me alot.

  8. Myself and my family make use of an optometrist friend. All Oakley and Ray-Ban glasses tend to be anywhere between 30%-50% cheaper than "Sunglass hut" prices. I can easily believe the OP's statements.

  9. I did a ride from Serengeti to Delmas Road on Sunday. It was muddy. A little stream that we normally cross was up to my waste and a farmer in his 4X4 was stuck in there. Granted this was after the rains on Saturday so it should have improved by then.

  10. So for 2 years I've been relying on the gauge on my pump to set my tyre pressure at 1.9bar rear and 1.6bar front. I weigh 93kg's. Last week I went and bought a digital pressure gauge and according to that; what I thought was 1.9bar is in fact 1.6 bar and my front tyre was not 1.6ar but 1.3bar. Now my question is do I leave it at 1.6 and 1.3 cause I never had any issues or do I change to the correct 1.9 and 1.6 which feels way hard now.

  11. I started cycling 3 years ago for the fun of it. To get outdoors with my wife and maybe one day do a stage race or 2. Not for one second did I plan on losing weight while cycling even though I was close to 100kg's. As we got into it we naturally started doing longer and longer rides. Our first ride was 15km and I felt like I had been hit by a bus for week after that ride. As the weeks went by and the rides got longer and longer I naturally started to lose a bit of weight. I somehow found myself being drawn to the healthy food options on a menu because I knew that carrying 1kg less up the hill was far better than carrying 1kg more. 3 years have gone by and I'm at 90kg's; done W2W, Sani2c, a bunch of local races and in for Joberg2C in April. So my advise would be to just go ride. If you feeling strong on the day push yourself a little harder, if you not feeling strong then just enjoy the view but make sure the view is from your saddle.

  12. Im looking at getting the merida Big Nine XT 29er. Im still trying to find out if the rims support a tubeless conversion, but im sure they do.

As far as I know I need to change the tyres.

Im trying to save a bit of cash, and the bike shops want to charge anything from R1690  to R1800-00 to do the conversion.

Im sure I could  buy the tyres and tubeless kit and do it cheaper by myself.

Assuming your rims support a tubeless conversion; just Youtube "Ghetto Tubeless Conversion" and follow the steps. Total cost to do my wife and my bike was +/- R900. R400 for Stan's sealant, R100 for alligator tape at builders and R350 for the Stan's tubeless valves with removable inner core. Plus still have sealant for future top ups and never have to go back to LBS for basic tubeless problems.

  13. The thought has never crossed my mind about riding without a helmet and thank goodness I followed that rule on New Years day last week. While coming down the single track from the school in Delta Park at no great pace as I was introducing this piece of magic to my father-in-law from Durban; I caught one of the berms at a "funny" angle. Front wheel washed out, over the bars I went. I landed on the back of my head breaking a piece out of my helmet at the back and having the helmet literally crack down the middle in two pieces. Thankfully, I got up unscathed apart from a broken ego and moerse headache on-top of the hangover from New Years Eve. Needless to say I will never ride without a helmet and I will not entertain riding with someone that doesn't wear a helmet.

  14. After getting lost and giving up on the 70km ride; I joined the 45km route back to the finish. I had the leaders of the 45km pass me and I was shocked to see what I would call "cheating". If I am over-reacting then I apologise but the number of corners that these guys cut was eye-opening. My wife and I were dumbfounded when a snacky single track in open veld became a flat out straight line for these guys. Also a wide sweeping turn with no obstacles was also completely ignored and the shortest point was where these youngsters rode. I call them youngsters cause they did not look older than 18 to me.

  15. Did you communicate this to the timekeepers when they scanned your board after the finish line...?

Yeah we let the timing guys no. Officially disqualified. Never thought this was possible. I have never been to concerned with GPS routes, but after yesterday's stuff up on my part I really wish I had the route loaded on my garmin.
