  1. Next we can start a topic on the "toughest race in South Africa"
  2. https://www.inov-8.com/race-elite-3in1-glove?colours=616 if you can juggle getting an index finger out for the brakes or if you are happy to function in the mitten. These are awesome
  3. +1, the trainerroad adaptive looks really interesting, If you have a coach and use trainingpeaks then rouvy is also a great option, your coach can build the intervals in TP and they are there ready to do in rouvy. You can also download the route so you can save a bunch of bandwidth for the TV streaming.
  4. my 2c is that the trainer is the way to go. If I look at the running costs of riding outside or paying a gym for a wattbike. The trainer will pay itself off very quickly. In terms of the platform to run the trainer this is key. They all have dedicated training plans now, it is a bit harder to follow when you can slack off training at home. But I look at the turnaround my wife had with her cycling from a basic zwift training plan, it was impressive. She was a total beginner and now in terms of pedaling she can definitely hold her own with the average weekend warrior and has done some pretty big rides(200+km mtb). I dropped my virgin active membership in lieu of a used Wahoo kickr in 2017. I put my old hardtail on it. I run the old 10speed XT rear derailleur with the cheapest 10 speed road cassette and chain and a 40tooth chainring up front. Because it is a sterile environment the chain and cassette last forever on minimal lube(wax makes them go even further). We clean the chain every 2 weeks and re lube it every few rides. Means my weekend bike lives a pretty awesome life, when it goes out I am fit and enjoy the ride and it is looked after well and basically only has weekend and sunny days rides on it. With a new baby in the house I have had a few 10pm and 3am rides which I would not have done if I had to go to a gym. Even walking across the field to my personal plaas gym in the cold is a struggle some mornings. The big key is to make it hassle free, if you have to struggle, setting up bikes and tvs and moving furniture and fans etc, then you will not do it. If you commit to getting a basic set up permanently ready, you will do better.
  5. when we lived in Durban I used to go through Castrol DWF like there was no tomorrow. Used to spray and wipe tools and then the motorbikes also got the same treatment. and so did all scrap metal. https://msdspds.castrol.com/bpglis/FusionPDS.nsf/Files/CB59BC5F8B1DEC378025770C00428BEA/$File/DWF.pdf Then get the silica sachets from shoe boxes etc and put them in the drawers of your tool boxes.
  6. The other night I saw pre orders for the new sram strong hanger AXS for like 60k for a crank, shifter, derailleur chain and cassette. I couldn't believe what people waste money on, I nearly chocked on my 18 year old Glenmorangie.
  7. Thanks for this, good to see you have it on the policy, a lot of sites forget about it, so well done. Don't worry I have no intention of scraping bikehub, just poking the bear because I can. I don't need to build a dashboard to see the market is under pressure. For interest when you do bikehub classifieds year in numbers. Can we get a graphic showing the value of an item vs the length of time listed. I think it will be interesting to see if there is a correlation
  8. 100% and bikehub pay would only have a sample of the sold prices as well. In terms of secondhand bikes I believe it may be the single biggest source in SA. FB marketplace may challenge but I think bikehub might have more especially higher end bikes. Property is a million times easier, it also turns over slower and has the deed data to back it all up. But it comes back to seeing prices for sale are not sold prices.
  9. What are the bikehub's policies on web scraping? Asking for a friend... For work I used to- let's say "gather"- property data from a few sources for a bit of a market comparison, we would also map it spatially and do a few other things with it. There were a few key things to consider, asking price, time on the market and then for property we would get sold price. It gives you a far better indicator of how the market is doing. When the time on the market stretches out and the differential between asking and selling grows you know the market is under pressure. This often is followed by a general drop in selling prices over time. It is a good indicator to wait before buying. When the selling time is quick and there is little differential between asking and sold price then it is a good idea to buy as the price tends to rise thereafter. Anyways it was not perfect but for what we used it for it was dead on. We could spot in demand areas and uplifting suburbs and make decisions for our actual work. Bikehub pay could potentially unlock the treasure trove, but I respect them for keeping it under wraps. I think between energy costs and food costs we are in for a few rough months and luxury items such as fancy bicycles are dropping lower on many priority lists.
  10. 100%. Economically it does make sense. If a tracker is able to recover 1/5 vehicles. That 1/5 will cover the cost of the discount in insurance for the 4 not recovered. I will be happy as a customer, on my car it is like R500 off the insurance spending R99 a month on tracker so a net saving of R400/month. Tracking company is happy as they get a bunch of business. Win Win Win. Even Sars is happy as money is spent all round. My concern with a bicycle is that there is no electricity generation so the owner is in charge of keeping that tracker battery going. When it gets stolen and they can prove your battery is dead then insurance is not going to pay out. So that battery better last long and it better be easy to charge.
  11. We were discussing this earlier this week with a family member who just had a car stolen. Honestly in my opinion the gps tracker in your car is so you can track family members on long drives to see they get there safely and to drop the cost of insurance. Because most of these trackers are GSM based. I won't go into the details around how to avoid GSM signal, but with certain common transport methods and load shedding it is really not reliable enough in present day. Insure the bike and carry on...
  12. He did that in alpinestar tech 10's. If you simulated such an impact on a mtb you would likely blow out your knee, ankle and Achilles... I do however wonder if there was not a fluoroquinolone involved there, with the stresses of needing to race week after week if he didn't try squash the flu quick and boom...
  13. Sounds like the Cape MTB trails have got nothing on the chaos of the Spruit... Wait till you add dogs into the equation.
  14. If you just want to see if you like gravel, chuck a 36 or 38 on the mtb and go race. You will likely be more comfortable that way. I think Gravel bikes are faster, if you are gravel bike fit, they do hammer you a bit more, you do have to ride a bit more carefully on narrower tyres etc. But starting out I would just change the chainring and go see if you have fun on your mtb. If you enjoy then you can have a look at a few gravel bikes and start deciding for yourself.
  15. this is a proven fact... Where there is a will, there is a way. Best thing about everyone emigrating is that they can forward our online shopping vis private courier...
  16. https://www.competitivecyclist.com/kuat-pivot-swing-away-extension?avad=229121_e304f8e0d&SharedId=229121_e304f8e0d&utm_medium=Influencer&utm_source=www.youtube.com%2Fsydandmacky&utm_campaign=Custom+Link&utm_term=Influencer https://www.kuat.com/product/piston-pro-x/ I saw this on a video, looks really really awesome. The rack as well is made to slot into a tow hitch receiver which makes so much more sense than onto the ball. I am sure a good fabricator could sort you out in a day or 2.
  17. nutrition, nutrition, nutrition... Someone once said 100 milers are eating competitions that are disguised as runs. More and more I am believing that...
  18. I don't get this, you would rather have effed shins and stitches regularly or have to ride with knee guards. Than ride with cleats which once you have figured out(and they not rocket science) cause pretty much 0 issues?
  19. take it to the towbar guys and take the rack same time. If the rack works on other cars then it is their wiring. They should be able to sort it out.
  20. Running distance is all relative. once you have run a 20km a 5km seems chilled, once you have run a 100miler a 40km seems chilled like a Sunday run. Keep running consistently and stretch the distance slowly, you will be surprised at how it goes.
  21. Maxima SC1 makes your bike smell good too...
  22. it is much more fun that than that, a friend and I were buggering around before a motorbike race a few years back, anyway childish games meant we both had front brakes covered in silicon spray on the startline. We both could do nothing but laugh when we were dragging our bikes out the bushes on the outside of the first corner because we just couldn't get the bikes to stop and neither was going to take it easy off the line. Lessons learned, it burns off quick enough
  23. If you don't mind me asking- why? Bicycle can be carried into the house onto it's bed/sleeping place/trainer...
  24. means 90kg, but 75kg if you think of a jump. 60kg if you are likely to case a jump and 110kg if it is on the indoor trainer...
  25. marine grease on the inside of the seal and bearing...
