  1. I also think that the Pumas are not the team of a few years ago. Vastly improved.
  2. Depressing really. I'm not an expert on technical stuff so I have no idea where you would start fixing this. It's like the guys are not really interested. No passion. And that can't be right. You don't get to that level without a strongly competitive character. No gees.
  3. Nice. One of my favorites. Drinking Yirgechefe at the moment. From Green Bean Roastery. Quite a light roast. City or full city perhaps. Still new to this terminology. Since you are roasting I have a question. Am I correct in assuming that the lighter roasts retain more of the distinctive flavor of single origin beans? Is that the reason a lot of commercial roasts are so dark and oily?
  4. Most of its in fact quartzite. Very hard. That's from the Wits group. The Andesite weathers to a brown. You can see the color where it's freshly broken. The Wits group was put down in a kind of shallow inland sea before the Vredefort impact. It's why the Wits layers are all so steeply angled. As I understand it Joburg is on the edge of the crater. I think the Andesite was just after the impact. OK so here are the dates roughly I think. Wits group put down between 3 billion to 2.7 billion years. Vredefort impact 2 billion. Ventersdorp 2.7 to 2.6. Amazing really.
  5. Hahahaha. I have always been facinated by geology. It was a bonus to date a geologist. I nag her about stuff constantly. I have had her drive me all over Joburg with the PH.D. Friend and had them explain it all to me. The thing I wrote above is a bit misleading where I say it's all sedimentary metamorphic. That applies only to the wits group. The andesite is obviously not sedimentary and not part of the wits group.
  6. I'm going to put it in a fairly organized tool shed where I keep all my bike stuff and so on. I also make biltong in there.
  7. Funny you should ask. My GF is a geologist and I have ridden around the place with a woman who has a PH.D. In geology. It's mostly the Witwatersrand group with some patches of the Ventersdorp Andesite. The Andesite is a lava. Greenish blue. There are even some amygdales that you see in the Berg basalts in it. Those white crystal things. Wits group is obviously mostly quartzite. It's all sedimentary metamorphic. The pebbles could be either fresh deposits but I don't think so. The Bird reef is part of the wits group and it is pebbly when it weathers. It was a river bed almost 3 billion years ago and then over time was turned to rock. It has a tendency to turn back into the pebbles it once was. Not sure that is the actual bird reef out there as it is actually in the Selby area but I use that as an example. Anyway I'm not a geologist but I find it interesting. Perhaps a real geologist could add more info
  8. Newish GF so I'm OK at the moment. Hope it stays that way. The roaster might provoke a reaction though.
  9. I want. Actually I need.
  10. That first climb is a real beast. Years ago as I was getting ready to ride a bloke came up to me and asked how much climbing there was. I said about 1200m over the 56km. He said that was easy no big deal and off he went. I caught him at the top of the second climb, the one before you hook a left onto the one way section. He was pushing. Had a real go at me because I told him only 1200m of climbing and here he was still climbing and he had already done about 4000m. I tried to explain to him I meant altitude gain but he was too cross to listen. No idea what happened to him.
  11. The old course for the 94 you could add about 30 min to your SBR time to approx your 94 time as long as your SBR time was between 2:15 and 2:45. Last years route add about 35 minutes. Not sure what it will be like for this years route.
  12. Still may favorite ride. I use it to measure my level of fitness. Anything over 2:30 means I need to get with the program. Under 2:20 it's starting to work. My best time is 2:07. I dream of going under 2:05. Next year I think I will do it.
  13. So much talent. So much confusion.
  14. Not good rugby at all. At least as bad as Australia. Handling errors and the usual lack of imagination.
  15. Ozzie vs Kiwis. The Kiwis claim to have found a bugging device in their hotel meeting room. Ozzies say they know nothing about it. Always happens to the Kiwis. I have lost count of the number of times they have been spied on, poisoned and so on. I think they just make up stuff before hand in case they lose.
  16. I did from Sunday to Wednesday morning twice but found it a bit long. Cuts down on my productivity. It gives the digestive system a rest and rebalances gut bacteria. It resets portions which get bigger over time, well they do in my life. It resets your palette and you can really taste the subtleties in food after a fast. Healthy food tastes great while things like choc bars become foul. I have found that the fasting slows recovery if I ride very hard over the weekend. That's a definite negative sometimes. It does something to how you use energy though. I will tackle a 2:30 hard training ride with lots of climbing with just a single water bottle and no food. I feel no ill effects from not taking on nutrition.
  17. I have mentioned it a few times. Fast once a week. Last meal Sunday early evening. Water or green tea boy until Tuesday morning. Break the fast with a cup of coffee, cause I like it, and home made yoghurt with pawpaw. Lots of good reasons to fast. Works for me
  18. I have never heard of a brand doing anything like that. Imagine Nike or Polo offering unbranded options. Sounds dodgy to me
  19. Beef is 32% protein. To get the same protein from steak as that powder you will need 1.2kg. I currently pay R85 a kg for free range silverside that I use to make biltong. Much cheaper.
  20. What would you prefer Myles? The eggs or the powder?
  21. Looked it up. At Spar which is listed as the cheapest it's R20 a dozen and Woolies is double that. 5 dozen eggs is R100 at Spar, R200 at Woolies. Both are much cheaper than that powder.
  22. Twenty servings in a container. Each serving about the same protein as three eggs. In eggs it's about the same as 60 eggs. No idea what 60 eggs will cost
  23. Well that's good that it was sorted so easily but a bit disturbing that it happened at all. What if the quality was not so immediately off? You would not have known until it was too late.
  24. We bought a new Aeropress recently. Nothing wrong with the old one but sometimes th GF is away on a job and I'm shooting on location so we need two Small colour changes but the quality was the same. I think you were sent a knock off.
  25. I started uploading workouts to Garmin again and after months of ignoring Vitality I logged on to see what was up. I think it will be impossible to make everyone happy and to eliminate some odd things. You just need to accept it, laugh and move on An example is I did a loop at the reserve with friends and some were quite slow. It took us about 2:50 for the loop. Like I said, slow. I got 1500 points. Two days later I went on my own. It was windy and hard and I was a bit tired but managed to do under 2:30. I got 600 points. So it goes. Not a big deal. Plenty of points on offer anyway.
