  1. Reading has been a lifelong companion. A refuge in tough times, a distraction in tedious times and a constant source of entertainment and information.
  2. There might be a work around but I wouldn't reccomend it. The old lenses are simply not made to work very well with modern digital sensors. You do see people using the old lenses but usually to achieve a particular feel or effect. One that you could most likely achieve in post if you really wanted to. Any solution you come up with will certainly not enable all capabilities of the modern dslr bodies in term of auto focus and various metering modes. Lens coating have improved hugely over the years and computer assisted designs have made optics possible that couldn't be considered years ago. Massive amount of maths go into the design of modern multi element lenses and huge computing power is needed.
  3. Loved Steven King. Then one day I picked up a book and it was just over. Tried a few times over the years but the magic is gone.
  4. I find it hard to get away from. I starting shooting and making pocket money from photography when I was 14. 1975. Been at it ever since. Shot film for 20 years and now digital for 21. I spent years learning to see in black and white as in 1975 colour was quite rare and very expensive. Most of my work is colour now but black and white is etched deep into me.
  5. Cape peninsular. Wild windy weather
  6. I saw a new Wilbur Smith in a book shop last week. He must be about 137 years old by now.
  7. Very nice. My GF makes haloumi and feta cheese. Small scale and sells it. Much better than anything I have ever bought. Today I'm making kumquat achar. Not much experience with Indian pickles so I'm not very confident. Have to start somewhere I suppose.
  8. They ship Eland out of there. Only so many animals the veld can handle. The largest herd of Eland in the country there. A year ago I saw a herd of Eland of over 100 animals. Never seen that in my life. Never even heard of such a large herd of Eland. What is odd is I have ridden there for years and never seen the herd, only heard about it. Can't imagine where they hide out.

    Rugby...

AC fines players for mistakes? Seriously? He must have made a fine profit from AJ when he knocked on in the last game. And what's the fine for kicking out on the full at the restart?
  10. Thanks. Interesting. This is a side of coffee making that I have ignored. Reading that thread I think I will continue to do so. But interesting to understand it a bit better.
  11. Would that be neccesary with the La Marzocco Linea Mini? I haven't noticed a difference but could be my palate..

    Rugby...

Interesting article. I'm amazed this is the first time this is being done. How doff is that? The other thing is we all knew AC was going to be coach so why on earth did it take foerever to make the announcement leaving AC 7 weeks to get his **** together before the first game? Trouble in SA rugby goes a lot deeper than the coach.
  13. Just got a batch of Lake Kivu from Rwanda. Spent some pleasant time dialing in the bring. Got to 17g of beans and pulling a shot of 38 g n around 35 s. Then I played with temp at 92, 95 and 98. Eventually settled on 96,5. Sip and spit or I will never sleep. Not sure it's normal but the temp change seems to affect the time it takes to pull the shot. Could be I'm not tamping consistently but I have noticed this before. Anyone know if it's normal? Anyway what a geekl I have become. Almost like being back in the darkroom with trays of developer and fixer.

At least in this game there was some indication that the team is improving. A glimmer of something that can be worked on.

Looks like a proper Bok team this. Nice. Hope they can maintain.

    Rugby...

Nice try. Let's see if we have a game. Kiwis didn't look so solid in defense there

I will get up in the morning, put on my Springbok shirt and with a cup of coffee support the team. Anything can happen.

    Rugby...

Hahaha. Yes. The highlight of the game. Ozzie sort of saying sorry for aboriginal genocide it seemed to be. Came across as just plain odd if you ask me. Sort of a slow motion Hakka with a stick is how I saw it.

Sunrise in Cape Town 40 minutes after sunrise in Joburg at this time of year. But anyway.

As long as we don't ever again lose to England. It kills me when that happens. Would much rather lose to Japan.

    Rugby...

I was thinking about this last night. Quite right. I won't be able to help myself anyway. Of course I will watch. But if after the first half I decide they look like the riders on one of the days of a Grand Tour that lie between mountain stages and the GC guys call a truce and amble along at 30km/h while a break scorches up the road, well then I will read a book rather. I want to see that they look like they want to win. I don't require them to win to get my loyalty but I need to see that they are committed. At the moment the Boks are starting to look like the French. Not in style of rugby but you know how the French can be dead unless and spend a whole lot of time not getting along and playing like disinterested plonkers then one day, for some unknown reason, they come out all full of fire, tears streaming down their cheeks when they sing the national anthem and then go out and beat any team in the world. I get that feeling with the Boks. If they click and if they are pissed off enough anything can happen.
  23. Uncle Paul used to drink on occasion at Ba Pita in Yeoville opposite Rockerfellers. A lovely combination of arrogant, drunk, stupid, crude and coked to the eyeballs.

If I was AC I would fire the flipping coach.

Yep. Couldn't stand it. Painful to watch.
