    Rugby...

I see the Bokkies slipped down to 7th spot in the rankings. We are just ahead of France Italy and Fiji. Let's hope we don't lose to Italy again.
  2. Perhaps it's time for some people to consider another event for the annual getaway on a bike. I'm not knocking the CTCT but is is being loved to death with the number of entrants. Have a go at the Amashova. For those that haven't done given the Shova a go it's an amazing event through beautiful scenery. It doesn't have have Chappies and so on but from a tactical point of view it is a tough nut to crack. Always been my favorite race actually. Anyway just an example of what else is on offer.
  3. It's obviously an awesome event but for me it's over. I last rode it in 2009 and it wasn't just the wind the ended it for me. It was stuff like having to go,to the expo. The cost of flights and the hassle of getting the bike up and down. Hours in the start pen. Just too much for a short bike ride. Now with two years ago a half race and this year no race and having to enter a lottery to get in it's even less attractive. I suppose we will see entries diminish and perhaps that is for the best. It will always be an amazing race I like to visit the Cape and catch up with friends and so on but never on Argus weekend. Sorry for all that went down and couldn't ride. I have literally dozens and dozens of disappointed friends. I'm sure the organizers did their best. They didn't cancel because they want to be difficult.
  4. I rode 2009. Strong gusts 0f 150km/h where measured. No idea where you got the figure of 60 from. But I agree with you. Sorry all but the correct decision was taken.
  5. Oops. If that's true and current it looks like 2009. Hope not for all the people riding today.
  6. Yes I agree. I can usually remember at least two things so I try to remember to eat and drink. I just deal with what comes up as it comes up. Usually around the 90km mark I find myself asking someone how long the race is. That usually gets a few odd looks.

    Rugby...

I think the Bulls deserve a special mention for not losing a game of super rugby this weekend.
  8. My last Argus(CTCT) was in 2009. Quite windy. On my gps I found one section where my HR was 178, was on a 7% descent and I was doing 9km/h. Hope you don't have to deal with that. It wasn't much fun.
  9. I am just so sad about the passing away of Barry. I immediately began thinking of my happy interactions with him and I'm know others have many happy memories. I don't think the other thread is an appropriate place remember the good times. It's just too sad. Let's have a place to remember Barry with happiness. Where all made richer by our contact with Barry. My best memeory was when I was still a drinker and so was he. We were doing the 24 hour at Rietvlei and had the weirdest team that we chucked together. DangerDassie was in the team as well if I remember correctly. Barry must have set a record for the slowest lap as the sun was coming up. I have no idea how many beers he had on that lap but we eventually set off to find him and he was just around the corner chatting to some friends and having a beer. Impossible to be annoyed
  10. Oh hell. Oh hell. Condolences to the family of course. Thanks so much to the people that took the time to keep us posted. I know it was an extra task in a tough time. I really appreciate it. Also strength to all his friends here on the Hub. To those that knew him face to face and to those that knew him as a special presence on the forum. May he be happy and may he have the causes of happiness. May he be free from suffering and the causes of suffering May he never be separated from the great joy which is without sorrow May he rest in equaninmity, free from attachments and aversions.
  11. This reminds me a little of the owner of Ride magazine. Well his son actually. Andrew Steer knows who I mean. He was very badly burnt refueling a generator. Spent a long time in hospital. A year later I did the Mashatu tour with him. Let's do this Barry.
  12. Perhaps Sagans mom can't afford the call or perhaps she has gotten so used to not being able to afford the call that she hasn't figured it's no longer a problem. As to the hair I'm surprised it even comes up. It's about as important as eye colour in my opinion.
  13. I have been off the Hub for a while. It just took too much of time. Just read this now. Am really shocked. I don't know Barry well but rode a 24 hour mtb race with hm a few years back and we communicated fairly regularly. Best wishes and a speedy recovery. He really is a very special person.
  14. No helmet laws in Holland. But then what do they know about bicycles anyway. And before anyone rabbits on about our bad drivers are you really trying to tell me that if you get hit by a car that the little cycling helmet will make a bit of difference?
  15. Actually there was video evidence date stamped that came from surveillance cameras showing the pharmacist dispensing the medication along with computer records showing what was dispensed and sold at what time. That formed the basis of the contamination claim and that is what was accepted. But anyway Makes a much more fun story to say that Daryl came up with an excuse and it was simply a accepted.

The good news is the Springboks have not lost a game so far this year. Go Bokke!!!!
  17. Do I have this right. 1. He says the medics gave this to him. The medic said they don't have this stuff in stock at the race and its not what they would have given him anyway for the symptoms he says he displayed. 2. He says he was really severely ill and needed treatment. A health issue. 3. Despite the severity of his illness he managed to come third beating amongst others Calvin Beneke, Darren Lille and Kachelhoffer.
  18. I could be wrong but I think mirrorless will take over as the go to cameras in the vast majority of aplications. The only place DSLR have an edge is with game shooting and high end sports. You would be shocked how tiny that market is. Read back in this thread and see how many people are not using their DSLR's because they are bulky and awkward. Mirrorless has non of those issues. The best camera is the one you have with you is an old but accurate saying. I am well glad to see the back of SLR cameras and I got my first one in 1975. Mirrorless is very similar to rangefinder and there is a reason people like Bresson used kit like that.
  19. Yes they did. I bought from B&H in New York. Quite painless and no slower than dealing with local dealers in my experience. I am quite used to needing international support for high end gear so this didn't scare me at all. Also I am not paying extra I feel you know what I mean. An example is the new Canon 1DX 2 sells for 120k locally. 90k from B&H. Five day shipping, pay the vat and you are done. The 6300 weighs just 400g, shoots 11 frames a second, has one of the fastest focusing systems of any camera, is just over 24 MP, and has a shutter rated for 200000 actuations which is the same as the 1DX. But you can buy 5 6300's for the price of the 1DX 2. The 1 DX shoots 11 frames a second and has better battery life.
  20. Just sold every scrap of Canon equipment and have invested in a Sony mirrorless. I think I must be mad. Or perhaps I made a good move. I have had a few issues convincing clients that it's OK to hire me for a day when I'm shooting on a little Sony but I am starting to get compliments on the quality. These little Sony Alphas are the most disruptive things I have seen since I went fully digital 20 years ago. They just don't look like real cameras though.. The attached image was shot at Park Station hand held at 1600 ISO
  21. Fikile is something else. Hopefully he will go with Zuma.
  22. AB is an amazing batsman. I was at the ground when he took the WI apart at wanderers. Wonderful to watch I just get the impression that he has to feel like it though. And sometimes I it seems he would rather be making money at the IPL. Fair enough. Cricketers have a short shelf life when compared to say engineers. On the technical side as captain I don't think he is bad. Field placings and so on but then I am not an expert at those things. Where he doesn't seem to work well as captain is as a leader of men. The team really pull together under Faf. On the quota issue it's quite interesting how the team is doing so well with fresh young black players, Indians, coloureds and whites. Very encouraging. It's a team that the country can get behind. Wish the rugby could be more like this.
  23. Ship of Gold in the deep blue sea. Written by Gary Kinder. A true story about a ship wreck. Wonderful read.
  24. I'm not sure white washing Australia, something no team has ever done before, is the same as acing the Sunday morning coffee ride.

    Rugby...

A very good result if you ask me. What was needed. Perhaps finally something will be done. It will start hitting them in the pocket. Stadiums will be empty and no one will want to sponsor this *** team. I can see them running out with "East Rand Top Plumbing" on their jerseys before too long. A closer result would lead the coaches to think all we need is a few tweaks, and what we need is a complete back to basics revision. I Felt very sorry for the players. It was embarrassing.
