  1. I have the small (I think) Makita and it is a little bit cumbersome (doesn't have a dual nozzle for bicycles, have to use an adaptor) and isn't that quick (on car tyres anyway) but nice to set the pressure needed and leave it.
  2. Isn't white gold referred to as "wood free paper" and not made by Sappi or Mondi? I do not think Sappi or Mondi mills suffer loadshedding as it would take weeks to re-start. Savvy estate agents are starting to identify these areas; or so I am told.
  3. Not sure if it can be managed naturally as it strikes me regardless of fitness etc etc (bit more susceptible if I have a hangover seems to me). Very cold air and pollution, particularly sulphur compounds, can do it for me. But ja, see your GP; mine is since early school days.
  4. I have a silly theory that when you fall at a slow speed you biff directly downward into mother earth's unyielding arms; snap crackle, pop. At speed you merely skid along the surface unless an obstacle stops you, hence roasties and scars. Of course the theory is not really held up by facts. I too have come off inordinately sore from a simple "forgot to uncleat" whack yet survived an OTB with just a few nicks and missing bark.
  5. Seems an ideal ride for a gravel bike and, although I have only suffered it twice, once each way, there is no discernible difference, to me anyway. BUT, I have heard from connections up there that they have had a lot of rain that has damaged the gravel road surface in some areas so a slog in the wet.
  6. You were loocky (Monty Python accent). I took a tumble at a race organised by quite a well known personality in the sport, eventually picked up in a bakkie by him, he was too busy chatting to John Smit to worry about me; dumped at the start/ finish; no paramedics summoned or in sight, daughter loaded me up and took me home and then casualty at the nearest hospital where I almost passed out. Broken collar bone, a few broken ribs and a punctured lung. Eish!
  7. ECCC - the critically injured rider has passed away. Very, very sad and RIP.
  8. They are the established brand but have devolved to some extent but teaching a similar "curriculum". Well worth doing; you always learn something and gain confidence. The introductory course particularly is very safe IMHO (I have only done one; but friends have done a few).
  9. It seems a no brainer to me but there is obviously a technical element to it which is not easily explained to politicians. My guess is that this concept of many domestic users feeding in requires a bit of load factoring, grid modelling etc and I doubt whether CoCT has the capacity to do this themselves and such specialists are not exactly thick on the ground IMHO (experience from 10 years ago). Now I'm guessing they would have to go to tender for these services and who is going to draw up the brief? Domestic input has been a bit of an issue in parts of Hawaii (Musk's boet I believe) and one can imagine domestic input waning as domestic power requirements climb in the late afternoon. Too timid by CoCT I think.
  10. As a toddling infant in this "loadshedding solutions" a simple (stupid) question please. Is there any way a properly configured solar system (say 5kW) can be damaged by the "overloading" mentioned i.e. when someone turns on oven+kettle+?
  11. Good points and I know on generation projects were we have had fuel gas, electricity and lubricating oil the replacement detectors were the appropriate Honeywells linked to the SCADA. Not a cheap exercise but worth it for big installations.
  12. You have a point - I saw an ebike YT clip where a smoke alarm was suggested in the area where you charge your ebike battery. Bigger power, batteries or generator, more reason for an alarm; definitely try keep it away from the house; in the garage? with all those nice bikes, sob.
  13. Rider is lucky the dogs didn't settle into him, even licking to death. I am a little paranoid cowardly in my old age on a bike and mbike on two way single track, even jeep track or gravel road. Too many head ons.
  14. This. A friend doing a different sport noticed his endurance decreasing despite training etc (doesn't monitor his heart rate). GP sent him to cardiac guy and he's having his investigation for stents etc tomorrow.
  15. and Vietnam and even Oz. There are always those who say things cannot be done; then those who can get it done, somehow; very few usually, particularly working for the "government". Even small generation equipment has load factor sensing systems (or a fixed power factor from grid analysis) and can vary output according to grid conditions (some industrial areas don't need power at night, residential power demand has definite peaks and so on). If there is an imbalance it reduces output or even stops it ("trips"). This stuff is advancing quickly all the time. Having had some dealing on an element of renewable energy supply with CoCT I am disappointed in them as their generation section (which has around 250MW capacity) seems to be a parking place for the arrogant jobsworths, dare I say some for demographic correctness. Their enquiries and contracts are cumbersome and, to me, greedy (I helped with a tender late last year - it was very one sided and arrogant - good luck CoCT). They have spent a fair bit of money (maybe R100m) on projects that are idle and, to my estimation, unlikely to be very productive; just to run them for say 5 years will cost another R100m or so. My view, take advice and lessons from municipalities that have done some things successfully (even though they may be ANC controlled) or get out of the kitchen - let the private sector do it and just buy the power on an equitable basis. Co-operate and compromise rather than dictate.
  16. Apologies if already reported by Cavs in court - but as a witness when robbed. Nice tickers. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-essex-64211501
  17. I see my Giant manual has this in bold : "After 15 normal charges, or at least every 3 months, discharge the EnergyPak completely by riding the bicycle before charging the EnergyPak again. This will increase the lifespan of the EnergyPak." I wonder?
  18. I am glad you found a good and honest mechanic; not that easy to get both.
  19. Good info here and my only 2c is watch out for water unless you know your efites is sealed. My Giant (2021 Trance) has given issues with the controller during rain. Be safe and take a "condom" if rain expected.
  20. Thank you guys. I used to always replace my own chains when "done". Recent experience with an LBS has been indifferent I think. A chain with no issues was replaced against my better judgement, and the new one broke after less than 600 or 700km (and I have never ever broken a chain except many, many moons ago on a Makro bike). BUT, 12spd, so the article from Steady Spin will be most interesting. Scary (to me anyway) to note that a good 12spd chain can set you back R1 000; about the same as a 520 O ring dirt bike chain. Even an X ring is only R1 300 or so.
  21. To digress slightly, how does the PT item work and is it 100% on needing replacement? I ask as previous experience of some bike shops is that a service and chain is like asking a barber if you need a haircut.
  22. He was certainly outspokenly controversial so I guess you guys had a few "debates".
  23. True maybe - he was not that dof (😇) but I'm not arguing with that thing, particularly as in PT we trust. Be very interesting to see his (or any) analysis though.
  24. Well said, I have a pair of DMR Brendog pedals but have wimped out and fitted cheap knobbly resin pedals as I have had to visit Mr Plastic surgeon to have my shin fixed and then have a number of very painful wound clinic sessions when it was reluctant to heal. Maybe weigh up your riding necessity or shin guards (although back of calf is also a tasty morsel for these pedals).
  25. Aye and use a coach or button head but nitpicking here. I have the same problem with an ebike (forgive me I have sinned but, but....) and I like your solution 👍 but need two as usually or often cart two bikes. Thule do sell long tie downs but these cost cost stupid Thule money. Luckily I was gifted two.
