Now, almost unbelievably, available online -

    https://www.sanparks.org/tickets/permits/

Seems like a simple enough process (register, submit details, pay and download) with no need for photos and you can still do the discounted four person deal.

I think the official announcement is due to go out in the next few days but the website is working now.

    Thank you for this link.

ZAR735.00 a year for an MTB permit and, by all accounts, they provide nothing in return.

Tokai Forest Lower gravel path loop,
Constantia greenbelt (Tokai Forest Lower to Silverhurst Drive or Bel Ombre,
Spaanschemacht / Orpen Rd bike paths,
Milnerton lighthouse to Blouberg or Melbosstrand along the bike path,
Koeberg Nature Reserve once it re-opens and you can arrange permits
    Somerbosch in Somerset West
    Jonkershoek lower circle road

Table Mountain jeep tracks pretty tough for a beginner IMO -- too loose and rocky.

    Agreed, good recommendations!

Constantia is going to start getting muddy as we hit winter (after the rains hit).

TM jeep tracks are still the ONLY place i have managed to come off a bike going UPHILL.  Def not for beginners.

For the price you won't find much better. They're not the lightest or best specced things out there, but they do exactly what they say on the tin and the backup is good.

This is the comment you can trust - it's from a mechanic and local bike shop owner in Cape Town (in case you didn't know).

yeah, i recall F1 drivers and Rally drivers being extremely fit. And when it comes to technical stuff it also help that they have lightning fast reactions.

They've got some decent bikes available, and i guess if they sell enough they might send out more in the range.  Anyone biting?

Two decathlon bikes got mentioned in Bicycling mag's "2024 BIKE BUYER'S GUIDE" - yet, neither has been available in all (or even popular) sizes.  Go figure.

I've been considering the new 11 speed Rook as a budget gravel/bikepacking option.

Hoping to get a closer look at one on the Easter weekend

See also: Titan Switch 2023 (<ZAR20K); or 2024 (ZAR24K), if budget permits

Both have carbon fork; 2024 has SRAM Rival drivetrain

Id personally go for a gx Cassette again. Currently running a gx cassette with 2 x01 chains and a xx1 chainring, switching chains every 500km, heard you can get some serious milage with that type of setup.

The GX cassette and XO1 chain option last forever and ever - it even survived the muddy mess that was the last Joberg2C, which I could not believe.

    I am an idiot.

Nope, you are not an idiot, just new to the sport.

Cycling is super expensive, especially mountain biking (things break).

The first answer to your post was correct.  Ride the bike and have it repaired under warranty for as long as possible.  Once you've exhausted the bike, warranty and/or your patience, make a decision about the sport.  If the bug has bitten, buy a Titan (best value for money new) or a good second hand bike (ask on here for free advice)

    Wishing you many happy miles.

Zonnebloem shelter - been in the newspapers a few months back.

One of the articles - https://www.news24.com/news24/community-newspaper/peoples-post/have-your-say-on-new-shelter-planned-for-district-six-20230620

YES, there are/were MANY of these projects !!  Sadly very few make it past the "public participation" phase.

EDIT : the term  "shelter" is often mis-used in media.  The Zonenbloem facility was earmarked as a rehabilitation centre.  A shelter with the sole purpose of getting people back on their feet, and helping them with basic skills.   This is totally different to the hot-meal-and-cot type facilities.

Thanks for the link - that one was opposed by the District Six residents / associations (IIRC) - it appears  that NO ONE wants a shelter on their doorstep, not just the privileged few living on the Atlantic Seaboard.

It should be recognized that this is not just simple eviction and nothing else - last night, social workers / CoCT representatives were interviewing the homeless sleeping on the Promenade (which is also a huge problem).  Not sure why, just interesting to see the ongoing initiatives.

Like clock work .... cleaning the city the week before the CTCT ....

The IRONY .... the very inner city residents STOPPED the process to provide a 100 bed facility to help needy people get back on their feet.  The COCT is trying to provide these facilities, each the "local residents" stops the projects ....  Then these same "local residents" gets upset about people living on the streets .....

Until the route cause is addressed, the crime wont let up.

SURE - there will always be "some" crime, but if a significant portion of these people are afforded the opportunity to get back on their feet, then there can be a drop in the crime.

Any facts to back that up?  As far as I am aware, the new 300-bed homeless shelter has been approved and the Haven Shelter increased in size.

This was a Court-approved eviction, so due process was followed.  The people in question do not want to be housed in a shelter or rehoused.

Not likely that any car was going to stop and help. We truly live in a sick and demented society.

Our Pastor in church this morning was talking about someone who found a lost wallet full of cash and cards recently, and this person went through quite a mission to find the owner. The pastor was contacted trying to find the guy who picked up the wallet and the owner was shocked that not only was his wallet returned, but that no money was taken. He said it was truly tragic that we live in a world where people are shocked by someone displaying integrity. That resonated with me.

The world today doesn't care about anyone anymore. I'm confident that even if these two chaps were assaulting the cyclist, he'd be on his own along that stretch of the N1. People are just unwilling to step outside of their comfort zones to help someone in need.

Robbie, you are applying High Trust Society morals to a Low Trust Society.

Our society is, unfortunately, a million miles away from High Trust; and you need to act accordingly.

    You are 100% correct, Chrisjan.

Stealing AND the receipt of stolen goods USED to be crimes that were prosecuted in SA.   Sadly, this is no longer the case.

The man arrested at Lion’s Head for robbery and attempted rape appeared in Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

According to IOL, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila confirmed that Sidney Wolhuter (23) has been charged with two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, two counts of attempted rape, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Ntabazalila stated that the victims were two women: a Japanese and a Dutch national.

He said that the State would oppose bail if the accused applied and that the case was postponed until February 7 for bail information.

Rangers from Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) apprehended the man on Sunday.

This came after a woman was robbed of her belongings while hiking at Lion’s Head, according to SANParks TMNP.

The arrest was made as a result of a collaborative effort between SANParks rangers, City of Cape Town Metro Police, and law enforcement officers who located the suspect and recovered the women’s belongings.

The man was arrested, and the victims filed a criminal report.

Megan Taplin, TMNP manager, thanked all parties involved in the joint operation that resulted in the arrests.

‘Our teams will continue to monitor this area and ensure the safety of the park users. Well done to all involved and keep up the exceptional work!’
