  1. Those of you with marzocchi components know that getting it serviced is not easy to do in South Africa. Since my folks are visiting family in Sydney I figured its a good idea to have Australian agents send my dad a seal kit for my 66 to bring home. Whilst googling I stumbled accross a few companies who manufacture compatable seal kits for all the big names in mountain bike suspension. Particularly Racing Bros, Enduro and SKF. They dont strike me as chinese specials either. I've also noticed that many bike stores in the states, uk and australia use these products regularly when servicing forks etc. Instead of the kits supplied by suspension manufacturers themselves. My question is if any SA based LBS might be using any of these. Maybe even without us knowing? or are we hellbent on original parts only? Read up long enough and you'll notice that some of these guys are using these kits exclusively for years. Many reviews mention the improvements made to seal kits over their original counterparts. There are also many user based raves about the products aswell. It is a mixed bag though. Not everyone is happy. But some people are also complaining about original parts too. So, any experience? Thoughts? http://www.enduroforkseals.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/end_on_pike.jpghttp://probikes.cl/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Enduro-Seals-01.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/ilPvcPI.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/GvGG8wl.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/dTtOHaB.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/LJ3vy2G.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/IilVCAu.jpg
  2. Got hold of a used used frame and building will commence as soon as budget allows! Some advise on the fork please? Pyga recommend a 120-130mm travel. Did some reading and the rockshox revelation (140mm which is adjusted to 120mm seems the most popular). The revelation sells for 8K, whils the rockshox reba (120mm travel) sells for ~ 6.5k. If my riding style is more cross country than trail riding, would the reba be ok? (Keep in mind that i still hammer the techinal downhills when they present themselves). Don't want to sacrifice the frame's "personality" by fitting the wrong fork, but also don't want to spend xtra if not really neccessary. Any help or suggestions from the pyga riders out there would be greatly appreciated?

  4. I'm looking to upgrade the fork on my Spez Camber, which comes standard with 110mm travel. However, aftermarket forks aren't available in 110mm travel - so I've got the option of either the 100mm RS Reba or the 120mm Manitou Marvel Comp. They both are in the same price class, with similar tech. Any suggestions? I can either increase or decrease my current travel by 10mm, depending on the two forks.
  5. Originally I felt it was a little narcissistic to be posting a bunch of "Look at me, I'm building a bike" pictures but I was asking a question over at tech Q and A and someone suggested I start a build thread and I felt maybe I'll rethink my position. Oh an I apologise for the rubbish picture quality. My phone is a blackberry and it felt silly taking pics on my slr. Will take a proper one when its all done. So to the what. I'm building an orange cotic soul 26er steel hard tail. Interestingly I decided to do this just around the time that all the big brands are declaring the extinction of the 26er - hopefully that's not actually the case. But politics aside here goes. So where am I so far. Well the frame sat in the spare room next to the forks for about 3 months but recently I accelerated the build by installing the headset and the fork onto the frame so that now it almost looks like a bike. I think my wife is relived to see it actually starting to take shape. I know I am. I have had unfinished projects in the past and I really don't want this to be one of them. So the Frame Orange Cotic soul Reynolds 853 steel. Legendary geometry that people can't say enough good things about it seems hopefully the rumours are true. Here it is upside down waiting for the first headset cup. Fork Rockshox SID RLT 100mm Black I cant believe how light these things are. Coming from Suntour XCT forks I'm totally floored. Hopefully they work as good as they look. Headset Canecreek S1 Interesting story behind this one. Went looking for a cheap reliable headset and discovered this in a draw. The guy at the shop was like "you mean something like this" the labels were faded and the price tag had yellowed. Yes its about 80grams more than cane creek's alu headset but it was also about a quarter the price so I bought it. Seems it was a good bet since its much harder to damage a steel headset cup than an alloy one. So in the end I think the extra weight was worth it. Its buttery smooth. Stem Ryder I figure its cheap and cheerful and I might change it in the future but it seemed like a good place to save some money. Spacers Spank spacer kit and one random spacer on top for a bit of adjustability. So assembly went like this. Place headset in freezer for a few hours to make it slightly smaller. Scrape paint off top and bottom of headtube to make sure its flush. Measure multiple times due to paranoia about whether or not frame needs facing. Grease headset cups. Place frame upside down on workbench. Place headset cup in frame. Grab plank - hammer away using plank on top of headset. Too slow. Place frame in bench vise and wind a bit. Headset goes slightly crooked move frame to place force on opposite side of cup. Wind slowly, stop and check, continue winding, stop and check etc. First headset cup probably took 30 minutes or so. Second headset. 5 mins. More of less the same process as above with less stopping to check since everything seemed to go together some effortlessly. And then I measure the fork and cut it . Finally installing the star fangled nut with a screw driver . This was fiddly since my steerer tube cut was slightly less than perfect which caused the star fangled nut to enter one side earlier than the other. All of this means I now have a frame with a headset, fork and stem attached. It now awaits wheels and a groupset. This is likely to take another 3 months since I'm doing this bit by bit. At present the debate is to build the wheels or buy factory built. Current weight 4.4 kilos if my memory serves me correctly. When I started this build I expected that I would get a bike shop to do some of the scary parts like installing the headset cups and cutting the steerer tube. But then I thought - whatever if I'm building a bike I want to do that stuff myself. The internet is full of scary stories but you don't always hear the amateur success stories or at least there's no picture evidence. Far as I can see I got my headset cups in dead straight and everything is on track. This is actually why I'm posting this so that perhaps in the future when someone out there is wondering can I build a bike they can read this and take heart. I'm no bike mechanic and I dont have many of the specialised tools one is supposed to have but I've done okay so far. Will update when some more stuff happens.

  7. So i've had it with my FOX RP2 Rear shock which came standard with my TREK Superfly. Time for an upgrade. I know nothing about rear shocks so some input would be appreciated. I ride mainly trails in the local bike parks and do marathon races with 1 or 2 stage races every year. Do I go Rockshox ? FOX ? Which model ? Is it worth having the remote lockout because i hardly used the propedal which is effectively a lockout. I've been looking at the Rockshox Monarch with the remote lockout....Any opinions on this shock. Oh!! how do the sizes work ? am i correct in understanding when they say 165 X 38 they refering to the eye to eye ctr dimension X the piston dia. Any help will be appreciated
  8. Do any shops/suppliers in SA bring these in? I've been on the phone with a couple of local shops and they all get back to me saying that their suppliers don't bring in the monarch plus at all, only the monarch... I know theres a couple guys here on the hub that have bought one, where did you get it from?! Can anyone point me in the right direction?
  9. Wowiez!!!! This is GOOD news. Hows about a Monarch Plus for your Stumpy? But WHY the hell only for the Evo models? Maybe time will tell? http://enduro-mtb.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Rockshox-2015-Enduro-Magazine-4-von-6-780x470.jpg I want one for my non Evo Stumpy FSR............ 11. Bought a Rock Shox Revelation (29" Tapered) 140 mm travel for a Pyga Oneten29. Pyga suggests a 120-130mm travel fork for this frame so I had the travel changed to 120 mm. Exposed stanchions now measure 115 mm?? Should I be concerned and have it changed back to 140 mm?
  12. After much internal debate and tooing and froing, I decided to replace my trusty Mojo SL-R with it's bastard child, the Mojo HDR 650b http://www.ibiscycle...s/mojo_hdr650b/ http://www.ibiscycles.com/images/uploads/bikeGallery/mojo_HDR130b-Ibis7219.jpg For those who are not familiar with the bike it is the follow up to the Mojo HD with some tech borrowed from the SL-R. It is lighter and stiffer than the HD, has better clearance for tyres, XX1 / X01 drivetrains and new gen piggyback shocks. Ordered the frame in Reverse Vitamin-P and in 650b mode. 650b mode? Frame can be run 130mm 650b 147mm 650b (using different limbo chips and custom tuned Mazocchi) 160mm 26" Went with the 130mm 650b as I already have what I need to run it 160mm 26". 14. My Felt Virtue was stolen in Stellenbosch, it is not a common bike so it will be easy to spot. It has a White seat San Marco, black waterbottle holder, silver coloured rockshox front suspension and Radium rear suspension. Shimano XT derailleur. 15. Does anyone have experience with a Rockshox Poploc not releasing? Fork is a Rock Shox Reba 29 RL Air (2012 model). Here's the Motion Control unit model: http://www.sram.com/rockshox/products/remote-upgrade-kit-poploc The fork doesn't unlock when pushing the Poploc button. The remote mechanism and cable both move freely. I also removed the Motion Control unit from the fork to check that it's spring was attached top & botton, and that the bottom aluminium disc/value was rotating freely. I testing the spring action without cable attached after reassembling the fork and the action feels correct. Any ideas why it doesn't release with the Poploc? Could the Motion Control unit's spring have weakened? I'm stumped.
  16. I recently acquired a new Rockshox Reverb Dropper Post, and out of the box, it has play at the seat mount. If I hold the post and move the seat, it has a little bit of side to side play. I have checked the seat mountings and they seem fine. The play seems to be at the top of the seatpost. Is this normal? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
  17. I am tring to fit the crown from an FSA Headset to a Rockshox Revalation tapered fork however the crown is not able to go all the way down. There is a gap of abbout 2cm between the botom of the steerer and the crown. Advise please from those in the know?

  19. A mate of mines bike was stolen please keep a look out!! See below mail from him! Can you please put the word out. I had a high end mtb that was stolen on Saturday (see details below) and I’m desperately trying to get it back. It’s a very unique bike and you won’t find many of them. Please can you help by forwarding to everyone you know. On Saturday 26th April someone stole my mtb off the back of a Thule bike rack that it was locked on to. It happened in the mall in Glena Marais shopping centre where Finish Line Cycles is and security miraculously never saw anything despite being less than 20 meters away. The bike is a Scott Scale SL 900. The entire bike is matt black with an XX1 groupset, Rockshox fork, carbon Syncross wheels and finishing kit. Non standard items are black ESI grips and Geax Sagaro tubeless tyres. It has a small white tipex marking on the seat pin where it goes into the frame and also on the saddle rails from when the bike was fitted for me. There are small scratches on the inside of the rear triangle caused by a piece of wire that got stuck in the wheel a while ago. Bike is a medium and 2013 model in excellent nick. Please look out for it cos it's very rare and worth about R80k and I’m not insured. Happy to pay a reward. Richard 0768133326
