While doing some research for crazy artistic paint jobs, I came across this. Sure someone will try it and show us his results. It is pretty cool.

Hi

 

So this is my SSCX/ Tracklocross bike

 

It’s an All city Big Block the frame was designed to be an urban track bike that clears 32c tyres.

 

The idea was to have a bike that be used for commuting but also handle some walk paths and gravel roads. My mate Sean thought that fitting 35c Schwalbe g-one would be a good time and they just fit with enough clearance that there is no rubbing taking place.

 

Parts used for the build

 

- Wheels are Mavic open pro’s which I converted to tubeless and hubs are flip flop goldtec hubs with 15t track sprocket and 17t white industries freewheel.

- Paul MTB crank with a 39t chainring

- Paul canti levers and Shimano long reach calipers

- Thomson stem and seatpost

- csixx carbon bars

- classic flite ti saddle

- natch feed bag

 

This bike is some much fun to ride and quite comfortable on the gravel.

Revisiting an old thread.. I am itching to get myself a road single speed or single speed project. Has anyone done a recent successful build? Basically what I want to establish is whether it is worthwhile searching for a frame that can be converted, and then sourcing the parts etc. etc.? Or going the route of looking for a bargain SS as a start?

 

Has anyone attempted to convert the rear dropouts on a road bike to horizontal dropouts? I suppose that will be the biggest issue?

I had a look at those but I am looking for that clean simplistic look of a road SS. Just like the Rook's and many others. In my mind the tensioner route, is acceptable on a MTB, but not for the ride I have in mind. 

Yeah, I hear you. Agreed, the cleaner look without the tensioner is awesome.

Vertical dropouts converted successfully on two of my old frames. One bianchi that I ride daily. Happy to share the info if you want.

I would love to see that. What type of frame was it originally?

My most recent build. Frame is self built out of ally tubing using bianchi fork and a set of wheels from rook. Gearing is 48 x 16 on the freewheel and 17 on fixed gear.

Not sure if I am ready for that yet, but sure seems very cool!

Check out the Rook website, they are running some sweet deals on there one series. I have been using a Rook One for a while for commuting, love it ! only reason im selling is i want to do longer rides with mates. not fit enough to use the SS. 

 

Alternatively you can build one up which is a lot of fun but will take some time while you search for parts, not sure what kind of time frame you have. I have a old peugeot frame which has horizontal drop outs that im looking sell for super cheap, let me know if you keen. its a start.

The Rook's are pretty neat yes, that is basically what I am aiming for. Re the build - a frame with horizontal dropouts is a good start yes. Then the research and sourcing will start. Wheels - would I be able to convert a set of road wheels? BB and cranks...

If it is a steel frame yiu could maybe ask someone like Dave Mercer to cut out the vertical dropouts and braze/weld in some horizontal dropouts for you?
