I was told that the cyclist was in the Yellow lane and a car had pulled over into this lane in order to allow faster cars to come past.

The cyclist was dead on the scene.

I was on the road about the same time and there should have been more than enough light for the motorist to have seen the cyclist. Even if he/she did not have lights on the bike (And I do not know if the cyclist did or did not have lights fitted to the bike)

My condolences to the family at this tragic time.

Tragic indeed.

While I don't know the specifics of this incident (and therefore wouldn't want to make any comment regarding this) I am amazed at how many cyclists are riding either in the morning or evening without lights and visible clothing. When I mean lights I don't mean a silly Knogg or Fizik saddle light I mean something that stands out. Clothing is also an issue - no one really wants to wear lumo gear but if it can save your life is it not worth looking uncool?

This is the thing, people do this but sitting on the right hand side of the car, more often than not an obstruction will only be seen at the last minute.

Road to Hartys is a prime example, people sit on your ass expecting you to move over into the yellow lane, and that's generally well over the speed limit already.

Not saying thats the case with this particular incident, just my general experience.

Probably the case DD, people want to go at 180kmh on that stretch of road. Once again im so greatful that I only have 1km of tarmac now between me and 45km of rideable trail. No need for me to hit the road.

And yes i wear lumo jacket on that 1km of tarmac im that paranoid about idiots taking me out.

Very sad to hear :(

I never pull into the yellow line....ever  I have had one or two close calls with pedestrians in the yellow line which prompted my decision.

This is very sad. A few years ago coming from Langebaan I also almost killed some pedestrians in the yellow lane. Before I moved in there the lane was clear. Since then I also no longer pull into the yellow lane. I tend to ride the speed limit. Yellow lanes are not made for cars to ride in. So who ever is speeding should then also be capable of overtaking a car and not trying to force the car into the yellow lane. Just my opinion.

VERY sad indeed. I ride that road a LOT! Was going to do the R27 to Duinefontein on Saturday, but think the Coastal Road might be the safer option  . R27 = SPEED FREAKS, Coastal Road = NO Shoulder to ride in and VERY narrow lanes for 9km!!

VERY VERY SAD to read and my condolences to the family. nyone know who this is as I know a good few riders out in the area.

Club mate was riding about 1Km behind the cyclist that got hit yesterday. His FB post said that it happened going towards Cape Town at about 6pm, and the rider was on a Mtb. Don't yet have any more details.

I stayed in the Blouberg area for six months during last year and rode the coastal road to Melkbos regularly. This road is an absolute beaut in terms of scenery, but certainly also with its own dangers. I was actually advised by some of the local cyclist that the R27 was the preferred road since it has a huge ”shoulder” which should provide a cyclist some protection. In the same breath the guys also pointed out that cars drive crazy speeds on that stretch of road…

Sincere condolences to family and friends.
