To be fair Aussies definitely did them first, had never seen them until started working with Aussie contractors 20 years ago. I think you were looking for these, colour scheme supplied currently being worn by far too many middle age men in stellenbosch with too tight jeans (other colours also available);

In Pretoria there are way too many "boertjies" in short short's, that are also way too tight, wearing these vellies.....
