Get your popcorn as I have a small rant... (Sorry know this may be off topic, but with the amount of safety talk happing in this thread of late I thought it would fit in here)

WHY IN HEAVENS NAME DO YOU HAVE TO CYCLE HERE???

I saw you turn off from Blaauwberg road onto Otto Du Plessis drive (r27). Why could you not have pressed the little button on the robot that allows you to pass safely to the other side so you can actually get on the specifically built bicycle lanes! Sure it would've made you wait for about 3 to 5 minutes and even if the traffic is moving at snail's pace.

By doing this you could have increased your and others safety 10 fold.

Are you too f...ing good for a bicycle lane? Are you an immortal god? Are you able to manipulate the space-time continuum? Why Why Why???
And when that day comes where someone hits you, now you expect us all to feel sorry for you and your family. Never mind the trauma suffered by those who hit you on the road where all of this could've been avoided had you invested more time in your safety and cycling on the dedicated bicycle lane.

I see this every day on this road, mornings and the evenings always the same idiots! Fed up now. think it's time to shame you.

Now that your rant is over, hopefully? I don't know the area, so perhaps could you highlight specifics? All I see, is an oke on a bike in the emergency lane, but that's probably not what you're driving at (as it were)?

Hi Fat Boab

On the right-hand side what you don't see in this picture is the bicycle lane that is separate from the road. (See image)

This piece of road is rather distracting to drivers as you have a fantastic view of the mountain and the vlei. Seen people swerve so much on this road into the emergency lane because they stare at either distraction.

My point is why not make use infrastructure that is there for your safety and convenience. why place yourself directly in harm's way when you can avoid it completely.

It just irks me. (Rant over)

Ah, I see. Separate, remote cycle lanes. Jeezo, the WC is ahead of the game....

Daar is nie pille nie ....

So much money spent to create a safe commute.  I could only WISH for something like that in my area ....  At least I have nice wide sidewalks    :whistling:  (okay, okay ... I encounter maybe two pedestrians per week)

I think it's fine. Big, wide shoulder, bumper to bumper traffic on your right. No intersections to cross until you get to paddocks. I think you're in more danger of hitting a pedestrian or another cyclist on the cycle lane. Had there been no shoulder, or non peak hour traffic, I'd have agreed with you

often find these serious commuter pro's who prefer to ride in the road instead of the cycle lanes .... when we see them we call out, ring bells, etc and try to let them know they are being chops.

to add I nearly got taken out by a commuter pro one afternoon.

this gentleman was in the traffic from town, we were in the cycle lane from town. Light turns red and stays red for sometime for traffic from town direction, we wait for oncoming cars from the left and I start to cross after the last car via the pedestrian/cycle crossing ... mr pro comes blazing through the red light at speed and just missed my by millimeters as he swerves wide at the last moment....had some choice words, but he just kept on riding into the sunset like the "cowboy" he is.

before the cycle lanes this was the only route to cycle to town on, there were a good couple of close calls from cars, taxis, motorbikes and the odd truck that veered into the yellow lane while we were cycling there ............ it is safer than being on the road, but certainly a long shot short of how safe it is on the cycle lane.
