That offer was only for CPT and JHB so for me it was useless. More of an irritation than a help. Glad it won't be happening again!

Hi guys,

Sending out email advertising to our database is something I've been very strict about not doing up until today.

The mailer which was sent out this morning was sent to all members who'd ticked the "Send me any updates sent by the board administrator" box.

While apprehensive about doing so, I'd felt this offer would be a value add to members, but as some have pointed out this is beside the point as there was no explicit opt-in.

In hind sight this not just a poor decision, but an incorrect one in terms of the regulations around this.

I apologise for this.

All I can do is assure you that it's something we won't be doing in future unless strictly on a separate and clear opt-in system.

Kind Regards,

Matt Eagar

Founder

what a legend response.

all these pathetic complaints about one email that was harmless, come on guys admin do such a good job on this forum dont be such ***holes after one fault or "in poor taste" spam.

Firstly, you lot are moaning about someone sending you a lekker deal. Yes, I was just as surprised as you were, but I read it and thought that it was quite nice to get specials from the hub.

Well done Matt on rectifying the issue. maybe create another sub topic called 'specials' that these types of things can go into.

Just a question though, do you call the people that put flyers under your wiper blades in shopping malls and threaten to report them to whoever because it is against the CPA legislation? No, you pull it out and toss it in the bin (but most people will just toss it on the ground before climbing into their vehicles).

I treated the email the same - is it something worth keeping? YES - leave it in the inbox, NO - delete it.

Talking about groupon - I am going skydiving for R660 instead of R1200 from an advertising email I got from them. Sometimes it is nice to be made aware of discounts that you would have normally missed because it wasn't brought to your attention...... just a thought.

Edit: corrected typo.

What if it were an offer to get a product that you were really interested in at 50% off? I dont think its the end of the world, there was an opt out option, the mail was sent with good intentions and Hubbers stood to gain, dont think thehub needs to get roasted for that.

Sure if we're getting 50 emails a day then I'd agree and would also get irritated but it was one email and the first sent from the site.

I think its great that thehub is approaching (or being approached by) organisations that are willing to offer hub members a discount just for being a member.

What the site is doing in terms of the ECA is perfectly legal, they need to have an opt out option that's it, now if they continue to send you commercial based emails after you've opted out, then they're contravening the ECA and then you can get your panties in a twist.

I get tons of emails like this and its not ideal I'll be honest but its a part of the communication age we live in, the only time I get annoyed is if I've opted out and continue to receive emails from that specific organisation.

Hats off to the site admin for not shying away from this topic and actually apologising, we all make mistakes, its how we handle them that count.

Thanks admin, faith restored.

On a closing note, while the offer may or may not have been interesting to this forum, what got my back up was that you were in fact promoting Flook, #34 in a fast growing list of "deal of the day" junkers. It does lead to pizza, spa treatment and time-share offers in no time. They are dependant on a "spray and pray" technique, not a pin-point to known interest groups.

Lots of scrutiny on these operators worldwide as there are some big issues eg. most of these deals are based on a minimun number of people taking up the offer, if not, your money is not refunded, just credited to the next "deal" etc.

typical... 100 things right and one wrong, then we want to slit throats. How about a thread thanking the admins for everything they've done to date

* I've searched for other threads, but couldn't see any *

I received an email directly from the hub email address with the subject: "Up to 50% Discount on Bicycle Services with FLOOK sporting deals". I think this is unacceptable, never mind being illegal.

I checked my privacy settings and I've only ticked two boxes, (1) Hide my email address from other members and (2) Send me any updates sent by the board administrator. I've never opted in for any communication regardings specials, etc.

The point is not whether the email might be useful or not, but that I never opted in for emails with contents like that. I know it's only one email, but everything starts with one...

Admin - can you please clarify on why this was sent and what you are going to do about it?

Please post full headers of the e-mail, might not even be from the hub...

i am more concerned about this flook crowd and where they got my email from - i have received marketing material from them on three different emails, and one email i use only for race entries - so some bastard event organiser is selling the race entry file

Ag, who cares, delete it or just leave it there, dos it really matter that much?.

Nobody has to respond, but honestly, surely there's more important stuff to worry about.

For sure......I often watch Groupon and have used a few of their vouchers before quite successfully. Recently I went on a hot air balloon ride in Hartebeespoort for 50% off, made a great Sunday pass time.

This is just advertising, no differant than a billboard on the highway or an advert in a magazine / newspaper, ignore it if you like, but hell, why try and ruin it for those who may be interested.?

Guys, is it that big of a deal?

It takes one click to delete it.

No doubt you get thousands of spam messages from other places...

I myself have 6724spam messages in my mailbox, just checked.

Thanks Admin! And thanks also for the apology

When they bring in an opt-in, then all you guys that want these can click yes. My decision is just that I don't want it. As simple as that.
