There are a lot of threads here about bicycle insurance.

There are a lot of threads here about stolen bikes.

How many of you actually have insurance on your many tens of thousands of rands worth of toys? Every post in the stolen bikes threads seems to be about some poor bugger wanting to get his bike back.

Me? My car, my bike, my bicycles get nicked, I distinctly do not want them back, cause f*&k knows what the morons did to them. I just want insurance to pay out and I'll be on my way.

Don't get me wrong, I feel your loss if your bike goes.

Just asking.

If you pay R30 000 for a bike make sure you have another R30 000 if the bike get stolen. I do not have another R30 000, so I insure mine. But like tnt said, if it get stolen, I don't want it back. I buy a new one.

Also, people who have uninsured bikes and find themselves in the middle of a bike jacking may tend to want to fight for it. Well since mine's fully insured (with every component individually listed and separately insured too), if they want it that badly they can have it. They'll just see my dust as I book it over the nearest wall. A couple days later I'll be back on the road with an identical replacement.

I have no idea how people buy expensive toys and don't insure them - do it even before you've walked out the store.

We all know we should insure our stuff but times are tough and not everybody can afford it. All my kit plus four bikes are insured so yea, if it gets stolen I know I'll be ok but I still feel for the guys who aren't insured.

I don't buy into that times are tough nonsense when these guys can afford R20k and upwards toys. Lets be honest, they're toys for our hobby.

Totally.

If you can afford to spend R20K on a bike then you can afford to spend R80 a month to insure it.

Just got insurance on my ride and what a piece of mind. Don't forget to insure your goodies too - got all risk cover for my camelbak, prescript glasses, etc

I insure everything, got no choice, can't afford to replace. What annoys me are the dodgy amongst us who insure and then make false claims. At the end of the day its the honest folk who foot that bill with out premiums and excesses going up.

Edge: you can try Outsurance for a reasonable quote.

Where do you get proper insurance for R80 pm?

My bikes, total value over R20k, I pay just over R100/month. Full comprehensive cover, just like I get on my laptop, cell phone, camera, etc.

Do a search, there are a number of insurance threads here.

Do people actually not insure their bikes?

A hundred bucks for peace of mind....priceless, and yes, the buggers can keep it and I hope they fall off and a truck drives over them....twice!

I just specify one bike @ R30k on all risks in my Santam Householder policy, since I will only be riding one at a time, and that's a good replacement value. They are stored in my house, so if they all get stolen from my house I should be covered.

In London you could get a specific bike insurance through the London Cycling Campaign, which I did and which did pay out (I had three nicked in the year I was there)
