Slaughter and Butcher 27.5x2.8" plus tyres on a 40mm internal width rim, 18psi rear, 15psi front. I have never felt grip like it before. Just insane, feels like riding on rails! And this is on a hardtail.

I was completely put off plus tyres when I had them on my Spaz Stumpy, but that was 3.0 tyres with control casing on 29mm rims. It's crazy how much of a difference propperly wide rims, strong sidewalls, and aggressive tread makes.

Side wall. That is the key, there are some great profiles out there that are renders useless by the side wall stiffness.

Went riding today at Hennops and blew the standard Maxxis Ikon 2.2  front tire sidewall on a sharp rock. I'm running tubeless. I am mostly to blame as I think I had the tire pressure too hard. Now I need a tire which will not break the bank. It's Januworry so cash is quite low.

Had a look around and the choice is between Conti Pure Grip TR and the Maxxis Exo range.

Conti's are around R350 - R450 and Maxxis are around R500 - R550. Although I see the Conti X King protection @ R600. Is it worth the extra cash?

Checked some reviews and the Maxxis Exo Ikons seem decent, also not as heavy as the Conti's.

Please help a brother choose.

Just got me a 2.6 Spez' Slaughter and a 2.6 Spez' Eliminator combo and they are awesome. Slaughter in the bigger profile is just more better'r and the 2.6 Eliminator is really very good. Way better than the Butcher. Not the old bargain prices that Specialized tyres used to be but still on par with  most other offerings.

Import. No other option. The 2.8 butcher has a death-gap (transition between mid and side knobs) of NOTE.

The Maxxis minion DHF 2.8 is about as tall as a Mary 2.35 but noticeably wider. That's personally what I'd go for, but it isn't a true "plus" tyre in terms of how tall it is.

So I'm in a bit of a connundrom, I'm looking for an aggressive 27.5 plus tyre for use on the front wheel.

My go to would be Specialized Butcher, but no-one is SA has stock and they do not know if there are any in the shipment arriving mid January.

Rush Sports do not bring in any of the Maxxis options (DHF, DHR2, High Roller), only Rekon which is okay for the rear wheel.

Trek have an option, but it is R1500 per tyre and not as aggressive as I would like.

Any other options out there?

Has to be 27.5"x2.8" and DH tread, does not have to be DH casing though.

Oh, and CRC not an option - after shipping and VAT it will work out close to 2k for a tyre.

Afternoon Gents... want to pick your brains here.

Im looking for a front. I have been running a 2.25 IBEX which is not shaping up so great on my new 30mm rims. However I love the ride, they grip in pretty much anything. Im 70kg's Kitted and I've never really flatted in front, and would like to get to the top without killing myself, however, I wont compromise on traction. So I'm contemplating: DHR, Highroller II, IBEX 2.4, Hans Dampf.

Any advice? I ride Boland trials 90% and gardenroute 10%.

You can't go wrong with WT versions of the Minions or High Roller II in EXO casing.

The HR II and IBEX are actually very similar. Is the Minion just slightly more "DH" ?

I would highly reccommend the Maxxis Aggressor as a rear tyre (available in 2.3" or 2.5" WT version), coupled with a Minnion DHRII 2.4, or DHF 2.5" up front. I find Exo casing to be more than sturdy enough (I ride Jonkers, Helderberg, etc and weigh 100kg).

The roling resistance is really not that bad, and that combo gives plenty of grip.

Ooooh. The AssGuys have already been 'announced' in DD (and EXO?), but don't expect to see them in the wild anytime soon.

I don't think in Exo...

Would love to give them a go, but with a normal EXO Minnion already north of 1kg, and not needing DD on my bike (if I did, it'd be on the back) I don't think I'm gonna be getting one anytime soon.

If they release it in EXO that will 100% for sure be my next tyre!

On the DHRII vs DHF debate for the front. I just replaced my 2.4DHRII with a 2.5 DHF, amd to be honest I can't notice a difference at all. Maybe I'm just not close enough to the tyres limits. But my choice of tyre between the two will come down to availability when it comes time to buy again, nothing more...
